TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Occasionally, someone raises a surprised complaint that while Christmas arrives on Santa’s sleigh at the Macy’s parade on Thanksgiving Day, the Church doesn’t catch on too fast. They may even say that Advent is a new‑fangled idea. Not so. To trace its beginnings, we have to go back to the fourth or fifth century in France (then Gaul), when Epiphany was the favored day, next to Easter, for baptism. The old pagan structures of Rome were collapsing then, and many people sought to be baptized. Since adults always prepared for baptism by fasting, folks counted back a few weeks for a kind of retreat. Before too long, bishops were advising everyone to attend church frequently beginning on December 17. Soon, artists were imagining ways of expressing the Advent mystery, and in Italy this gave rise to beautiful mosaics of empty thrones awaiting the arrival of the Lord of all creation. Advent as we know it develops on two separate tracks: the first having to do with our spiritual preparation for celebrating the Christmas feast, and the second having to do with the way this is organized and expressed in the liturgical readings and prayers every day of the season.

First Sunday of Advent December 1, 2019 “You ... must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” — Matthew 24:44

HOPEFUL EXPECTATION Our liturgical year begins with the season of Advent—a time of hopeful expectation of the coming of the Lord. On the First Sunday of Advent we look forward to the end of time when we will awaken to the dawn of Christ’s new day. Today we hear Isaiah speak of a day when God’s power will have brought universal peace and God’s Word will have instructed all people, radiating God’s “light” (teachings) into all of human society. Only when humanity walks “in the light of the LORD” (Isaiah 2:5), when all people desire to be instructed “in [God’s] ways” (Isaiah 2:3), will the world be set aright and our deepest longings fulfilled. The reading from Romans calls us to “awake from sleep” for this final “day is at hand” (Romans 13:11, 12). Together this Sunday’s scriptures proclaim our Christian faith that Jesus is the One who will finally come to fulfill God’s plan of salvation. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — All the peoples shall stream toward the LORD’s house (Isaiah 2:1-5). Psalm — Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord (Psalm 122). Second Reading — It is the hour to cast off the dark and clothe ourselves in the light (Romans 13:11–14). Gospel — Stay awake! Be prepared! The Son of Man will come when you least expect (Matthew 24:37-44). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Is 4:2-6; Ps 122:1-9; Mt 8:5-11 Tuesday: Is 11:1-10; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17; Lk 10:21-24 Wednesday: Is 25:6-10a; Ps 23:1-6; Mt 15:29-37 Thursday: Is 26:1-6; Ps 118:1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27a; Mt 7:21, 24-27 Friday: Is 29:17-24; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; Mt 9:27-31 Saturday: Is 30:19-21, 23-26; Ps 147:1-6; Mt 9:35 — 10:1 Sunday: Is 11:1-10; Ps 72:1-2,7-8, 12-13,17; Rom 15:4-9; Mt 3:1-12 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: First Sunday of Advent; World AIDS Awareness Day Tuesday: St. Francis Xavier Wednesday: St. John Damascene Friday: St. Nicholas; First Friday Saturday: St. Ambrose; First Saturday; Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

Dear Parishioners ADVENT BEGINS THIS WEEK … This Sunday is the First Week of Advent, the beginning of our new liturgical year. To remind us of this season of preparation for the coming of Our Lord, Sunday Masses will be a little different. For Advent, as we do during Lent, the Mass responses will be chanted in Latin. The Mass parts are found beginning on page 4 of the missal. MEN’S RETREAT … On Saturday, December 7, the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Men’s Retreat at St. Joseph Seminary from 9 am—4 pm.. If you are interested in attending the retreat, please contact Raymond 917-213-8517 or Jose 718-433-6075. ADVENT RETREAT DAY … On December 18 the parishes of our cluster (St. Raymond, St. Helena, and Santa Maria) will be holding an Advent Retreat Evening. It will occur at St. Helena in Spanish that evening, and it will be held in English at Santa Maria. We will NOT have a Spanish language Mass that evening here at the Church, and will instead have that evening’s Spanish language Mass at St. Helena. Stay tuned for more information. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS … Our Knights of Columbus council is looking for more members. If you are a man who is interested in furthering his faith, and putting his faith to work, please contact Bill Venturini at 347-309-1056. YOUTH MINISTRY … Our Parish Youth Ministry is up and running. Our parish and elementary school children who attend middle school are welcome to drop in from 3PM–5PM on Mondays. Our parish children of high school age and those children who attend either of our high schools are welcome to drop in on Tuesdays from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM and to attend the Youth Ministry Program on Fridays from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. They will meet in the Lower Church in the Youth Room. For more information please contact Sister Faustina Ferko at (929)436-3200 or [email protected] . PLEASE SUPPORT OUR BULLETIN ADVERTISERS ... we are grateful to the many businesses and offices that advertise and support the printing of our Sunday bulletin ... please consider patronizing them and tell them you saw their ad in our Sunday bulletin. MASS INTENTIONS … you can remember a family member or friend with an intention at a specific Mass come to the rectory for a specific date … the offering is $15 and Mass cards are available with each Mass … the intentions can be for a living or deceased person … intentions are printed in the bulletin. MASS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED ... The last Sunday of each month we have Mass at 12 noon with sign language ... pass on the word to relatives and friends who might be interested ... sign language is beautiful and inspiring to watch. RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION … Just a reminder that we receive Holy Communion either in our hands, by holding out both hands one on top of the other, or, in our mouths, by sticking out our tongues to receive in the mouth. Both ways are valid. Understand if you are carrying a child in your arms, and both hands are not free, the priest will most likely want you to receive in the mouth. This is to limit the possibility of our Lord,

in the form of the Eucharist, falling to the ground. Also remember that the proper response to the priest before receiving Holy Communion is “Amen,” not “Thank you.” BAPTISMS … all Catholics should be baptized … parents should be registered in the parish and attending weekly Sunday Mass in order to have the child baptized … godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation and, if married, married in the church … godparents must be members of a parish and must be attending weekly Mass … if you are going to be a godparent, it makes perfect and reasonable sense that you are practicing the faith and that you are a model for the child. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY ... the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, a sign of LOVE and LIFE ... Catholics should be married in the church and, if married only civilly, should speak to one of the priests about receiving the sacrament in the Church (called convalidation) ... please know that you are welcome to ask questions and to receive direction and advice about the SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … Please remember to secure a date for your wedding before making any arrangements with caterers, limo drivers, family and friends. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … the usual practice for Catholic burials is a wake service in a funeral home, a Funeral Mass in the parish church, burial of the body or cremains in a cemetery (preferably a Catholic cemetery) … speak with one of the priests for assistance before a death occurs and speak with a reputable funeral home director about pre-arrangements … cremains (ashes) are held in the same reverence and respect as a body and so they should be treated carefully, respectfully, reverentially and buried as soon as possible after cremation. PARISH REGISTRATION … all members of the parish should be registered and receive parish mailings and envelopes … if you are an adult (18 years and older), you should register to receive the envelopes and other information from the parish … you need to be registered in order to receive recommendation letters, financial statements, tuition rates and other parish related issues … HOW TO REGISTER? Come to the rectory office on Castle Hill Ave. LATE FOR CHURCH? … Why? Please resolve to arrive early for Mass, say a prayer, read the Scripture and be ready when we start it will make the Mass more prayerful and meaningful for all. Remember, if you miss the readings, you miss the teachings of Christ. St. Jerome wrote, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Getting to Church on time matters. VISITING OF THE SICK OR HOMEBOUND … If you know of anyone who is sick or homebound and would like to receive communion, Please call the rectory to give us your information as well as the information of the person who wishes to receive communion. They must reside in our parish area.

Queridos Feligreses, EL ADVIENTO COMIENZA ESTA SEMANA ...

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Is 4:2-6; Sal 122 (121):1-9; Mt 8:5-11 Martes: Is 11:1-10; Sal 72 (71):1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17; Lc 10:21-24 Miércoles: Is 25:6-10a; Sal 23 (22):1-6; Mt 15:29-37 Jueves: Is 26:1-6; Sal 118 (117):1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27a; Mt 7:21, 24-27 Viernes: Is 29:17-24; Sal 27 (26):1, 4, 13-14; Mt 9:27-31 Sábado: Is 30:19-21, 23-26; Sal 147 (146):1-6; Mt 9:35 — 10:1 Domingo: Is 11:1-10; Sal 72 (71):1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17; Rom 15:4-9; Mt 3:1-12 LOS SANTOS Y OTRAS CELEBRACIONES Domingo: Primer Domingo de Adviento; Día Mundial del SIDA Martes: San Francisco Javier Miércoles: San Juan Damasceno Viernes: San Nicolás; Primer viernes Sábado: San Ambrosio; Primer sábado; Día para recordar Pearl Harbor
