Take advantage of this wonderful website of-fered by the Archdiocese of New York. Our parish code for logging in is XQ43Q3. A highly acclaimed series called Presence is available. Following is a description of the series: What is it that is so special about the Eucharist? Although the Eucharist appears to be simple bread and wine, it is actually the “source and summit” of the Christian life. Presence: The Mys-tery of the Eucharist explores the truth and beau-ty of Christ’s real presence in the Eucharist, from its origins in Sacred Scripture, to its pro-found role in the life of the Church and her members. It is the crescendo of the entire story of salvation.

THE LAW OFFICES OF
CARING MATTERS
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
IT’S ALL IN THE FAMILY… Recently, a comedian spoke about modern twenty first century families. He said this: “Mom picks up the kids at school. Then she takes them to basketball games, little league and dance lessons; then she takes them for haircuts and then she takes them home. For most mothers, the real delivery room is the inside of an SUV or station wagon!” And seeing how much parents do for their children around the parish here, I think that his words ring true. This weekend the Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family. The Holy Family was composed of three of the holiest individuals that ever lived upon the face of this earth-Jesus, Mary and Saint Joseph. Now granted Mary and Joseph did not have to worry about taking Jesus to basketball games all over Nazareth! However, they had other worries to contend with. The Holy Family has been described really as a model of what family life should be-a community of love and sharing. Today in the United States, the family has taken quite a “hit.” It often seems today that a family is only a collection of individuals who just happen to live under the same roof. In some cases, there is lack of love, kindness and communication between family members. How to remedy that? Well here are some sug-gestions that could be of help for Catholic families that are ailing. Number one: how about attending Mass together as a family each Sunday? Recently, I was talking to a priest friend and he said that on Sunday when he was a child, his parents would bring the whole family to Mass and then off to the bakery for buns and a big breakfast after. That was in the 1960’s! Times have cer-tainly changed in the last fifty years. Today children’s schedules are packed even on Sunday and mom and dad are busy and running in sev-eral different directions. So it is not easy to get to Mass together as a family or even at all for that matter. Yet time given to the Church and Holy Mass is not a waste but vitally important for the health and growth of a family in love and care for one another. Parents really are the first educators in the ways of faith and they should set a good example by making Sunday Mass (or Saturday evening Mass) a priority. The late Father Patrick Peyton, the “rosary priest” had a wonderful expression which some might remember, “The family that prays together stays together.” Yes! The family that prays together, the family that goes to Mass together will be the better for it in all aspects. A second suggestion; how about eating dinner together? Family life suffers not only when we neglect the table of the Lord but also the table in the home. Less and less modern families eat together it seems. The culprit again is the fast pace of modern living and overpacked schedules. Researchers now tell us that when families make space for meal time together, the less likely kids are to smoke, drink, do drugs or develop eating disorders. The family that eats together stays together! Finally, a third idea. How about saying some important words in a family. Words like, “I am sorry.” “Thank you so very much” and “I love you and value you.” Words can hurt as we all know, but words can also build up esteem, compassion and trust. Today, there is a great need to reduce the often boiling warfare that spills over in our families. Wouldn’t it be nice if in family life we could from time to time say the “good words” that are so necessary to hear? As we celebrate this Feast of the Holy Family today, let us be thankful for our own families and may Jesus, Mary and Joseph richly bless them all! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
