FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

THE “PRIEST SCHOOL” (NOT PRE-SCHOOL) When I was assigned upstate at Saint Patrick’s Parish in Yorktown Heights, New York, the pastor there was a very talented priest by the name of Msgr. Dermot Brennan. One time he fielded some amusing questions from parishioners about the lives of priests. A kid asked if

priest’s slept with their collars on at night! Msgr. told him naturally most of us wear pajamas. Other questions concerned how priests were trained, what they studied and what living in a rectory was like. Actually, as a result of that meeting and those questions, the Monsignor had an “open house” in the rectory and invited parishioners to come and see what the living quarters were like-not opulent, I assure you! Over the years, many young people in religion class have asked me about how a person becomes a priest and the study and training it takes. I thought it might be interesting this week to spend a moment and discuss the formation of Catholic priests. When a young man (or maybe not so young these days) decides to become a priest, he must apply for the seminary, not the “cemetery” as the children say at times! The seminary is the “school for priests.” Here in the Archdiocese of New York we have Saint Joseph’s Seminary which is located in Yonkers, New York. It is truly a beautiful place. That word “seminary” comes from the Latin ”semin” which means “seed.” The seminary is where the seed of a priestly vocation is nurtured and fostered. The days are usually crowded. Morning prayers begin at 8 AM followed by breakfast and classes. At 12 Noon there is the community mass, lunch and then more classes till around 3 PM. Between 3-5 students have free time to study, to exercise or whatever! As regards to exercise, the seminary has a great gym which I still use to this day-weights, squash courts, pool and steam room. After this, students are encouraged to observe quiet time and make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament which is exposed every day on the altar in Saint Joseph’s magnificent chapel. At 6 PM there are “Vespers” or evening prayers followed by supper. In the evening there may be talks or conferences given by various speakers on religion and church topics. So you see, it is a full day! Besides the classes and prayers, students are encouraged to do some kind of practical apostolate outside the halls of the seminary. I taught CCD (Religious Ed) in a couple of parishes. Also, I was assigned one year to Calvary Hospital which is a wonderful place. Calvary is a very warm and consoling hospice for critically ill cancer patients on Eastchester Road in the Bronx. The apostolic activities help a seminarian to see the “wider picture” and to prepare him in a practical way for the ministry that lies ahead. Having never been a “brain” I found the studies in the seminary were challenging to say the least! There are classes in the Scriptures. Dogma (beliefs of the Catholic Church), the Sacraments, Canon Law, Mor-al Theology, Psychology, Homiletics (how to give a good sermon-important!) and Spanish. Intellectual for-mation is important as well as pastoral and spiritual formation. The goal of the seminary of course is ordination! It is a means to an end not the end in itself. Some jokester once said, “The best view of the seminary is in the rear view mirror!” I guess he did not have a very good experience! But many did and are now wonderful priests laboring in the vineyard. This Sunday at mass, why not say a prayer for vocations so that “Priest School” might be better at-tended! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
