Nelly’sRehabilitation.......

Working or not Working?

“The time has come for me to stop using weed as a crutch; I have to be me without that drug as an aid.”

NELLY was in hiding during 2008. So we at Harmony wanted to know where he’d been; and to our surprise he was in a place we never thought he’d be.... REHAB. So what went wrong?

Harmony: So Nelly how you doing?Nelly: Im good im good just trying to regain my focus and get back on my grind.

Harmony: Good. So you know i have to ask, why were you in rehab?Nelly: Im gonna be straight with you it was that chronic that messed me up. I got to the point where i couldnt do nothing without smoking that weed; i became totally dependant on it.

Harmony: I see, so what was it that made you decide to get help?Nelly: My children. One day i was rolling a joint when my daughter walked in and asked me what it was. I was so ashamed i didnt know what to say to her i had to just avoid it and send her along. That mo-ment there made me realise that i have 4 kids who look up to me and who im responsible for; i had to make a change.

Harmony: So what rehab did you go to?Nelly: I went to the St Louis rehabilitation facility in my hometown.

Harmony: Exactly how long were you in rehab?Nelly: Intially i enroled on a 6 month rehabilitation programme, how-ever after that i stayed for an extra 3 months because i wanted to be sure that i could do it on my own once i left.

Harmony: How did you find the whole experience?Nelly: To be honest in the beginning the whole experience was quite daunting i didnt know what i was getting myself into. I felt alone; i was in a strange surrounding with people telling me that i was an addict. Deep down i knew it was the truth but hearing it made me feel like a dummy who needed looking after, rather than the grown ass man that i thought i was.

Harmony: Did feeling like that knock your confidence and self- es-teem?Nelly: Most definitely. I felt low and inferier like i was less of a man for being in that situation. It was really a blow to my self-esteem.

Harmony: How did you tell your family you were going to rehab?Nelly: That was one of the hardest parts. I told my mom and friends plain and simple that i needed help and that i was going to rehab. I told my kids that i was going on holiday for a few months because i could not face telling them the truth that their daddy was an addict.

Harmony: Do you think your kids have an idea what you were going through?Nelly: I hope not because it’s not something im proud of so i don’t want them to know, but kids aint dumb so they may have picked up on something but i honestly hope they haven’t.

Harmony: Do you think there is anything you can do as a father to ensure that your children don’t go thorugh this experience?Nelly: The only thing i think i can do is just teach them about the dan-gers of all drugs and let them know that you don’t need drugs even weed to get on in life. I can also just be there to support them and try my best to be a good role model and positive influence.

Harmony: So when you came out of rehab, how did you feel?Nelly: I felt kinda good , i felt like i was getting a fresh start you know, a second chance. At the same time though, i felt kinda scared like would i be able to resist the temptation ; but overall i felt quite positive.

Harmony: How do you plan to resist the temptation?Nelly: Just try and stay focused on my kids and my music and re-member whats important to me. I have to have enough faith in myself to know that i can do it on my own without needing the weed to give me that high.

Harmony: You sound very determined. So whats next for you now in 2009?Nelly: Im just in the studio at the moment banging out some new tunes working on my new album which should be out in the next few months.

Harmony: Have you got a title for it yet?Nelly: Yeah it’s called ‘The new path’ just a little reminder to myself that i am actually on a new path in my life.

Harmony: What can we expect from this new album?Nelly: You can expect realness, you can expect honesty and you can expect the real me; all of me. Im going hard on this album im letting loose and letting all my demons out. I really want my fans to engage and connect with me on this one, and really and truly understand where im coming from and feel my pain.
