Freedom always comes at a price. Celebrating this weekend our country’s 243rd year of Independence we realize more than ever the truth of this statement. As we continue to live under the looming threat of virus, contagion, and protest, our freedom to move about as we like has been curtailed, regulated, and sadly in some ways, threatened. And while we need to respect and cooperate with the guidelines that have been issued by our President, Governor, Mayor and Bishop, we innately know that we were born to be free. Maybe this national holiday can remind us of the importance of patience when it come to our yearning for freedom. We need to heed the caution that “fools rush in where angels fear to tread.” Our nation’s freedom was not born overnight nor is it fully understood and appreciated by words that are embossed on a
parchment of sacred declaration. Freedom must be embraced and accepted as a gift. Won at the price of blood, sweat, tears, and sacrifice, freedom is our Divine right. Made in God’s image and likeness we uphold, protect, and fight to preserve and promote freedom for all persons for we believe as Catholic Christians that life matters at all stages. Our country seems to be undergoing labor pains. Hopefully, the new birth that will be issued forth will instill within all Americans a greater respect and care for life. Like all anticipated births, patience is required. I have often found solace and hope in this prayer of Saint Ignatius of Loyola: “Take Lord, receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and possess. You have given all to me. To You, O Lord, I return it. All is Yours, dispose of it only according to Your will. Give me Your love and Your grace, for this is enough for me.” Join me in offering this prayer as we together await the return of our freedom. If we abandoned ourselves to God’s providential care we will not be disappointed because “for in God we trust” is the essence of true American freedom. Happy Independence Day! Father Fonti

Registration for Religious Education
We thank the parents/guardians of our Religious Education children for all their support in passing on the treasure of our Catholic faith to their children through homeschool assignments while instruction in the classroom was not possible due to the pandemic. For the next school year, we are providing a simple and safe way to register
your child(ren) for the 2020-2021 Religious Education Program. Registration is now available online for new and returning students on our Religious Education page found on the parish website at https://stmels-queens.org/religious-education.
Please register your child(ren) as soon as possible so that we can plan ahead for the opening of the new school year. A letter was sent to current students via the Option C parent alert system with more details on our plans for the new school year. If you did not receive the letter, please contact the Office of Faith Formation at [email protected] and [email protected]. Please have a safe and healthy summer with your families.
