A MESSAGE FROM THE RESPECT LIFE GROUP… Bernice is a widow, and her children are grown. But she said its clear God still has plans for her. PP opened a new abortion facility in Sheboygan last year, she responded by organizing

a highly effective 40 Days for Life campaign. Those efforts continue to grow. New York's embrace of late-term abortion has motivated with new energy many first-time volunteers to hit the sidewalks. Meditation: “Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this, in His hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:9-10).

Knights of Columbus’ Fish Fry The Annual Fish Fry Dinners will be held at the Knights Home and Event Hall (Anna

Spring Clean-Up: We are looking for help with our spring clean-up of the parish grounds on Sat., April 27th. If you can help please meet at the CYO Pavilion at 8:00 AM.

We will host our annual Easter Egg Hunt next Sunday, Apr. 14th, after the 11:00 AM Mass on the grounds behind the Youth Center. The Easter Bunny will be joining us for pictures.

Lenten Breakfast Project – A bowl of milk and cereal in the morning is a luxury for some in our community. Therefore, as part of our Lenten food drive this year, the St. Isidore food pantry is requesting that parishioners consider bringing a box of cereal to church sometime during the Lenten season and to place an envelope containing $1.00 marked ‘milk money’ in the collection basket. Your charitable support will enable us to ensure that all children and adults in our community have access to a comforting and nourishing bowl of milk and cereal this Easter season. Thank you!

LENT…JUST AN IDEA! Are you experiencing new traditions this Lent? Are you finding that life does exist without technology? It can’t be easy to do

without our many screens. We depend on technology for so many things, but our heavenly Father wants you to depend on HIM for everything! Are you making time for his messages this Lent and feeling calmer and closer to Him? That’s what the Lenteneers are hoping! This Lent we encourage you to “Listen, Enjoy, Notice, Talk” to God and your family and then tell us about it! Drop your notes into the collection boxes at church and school so we can raise our thermometer and celebrate 1,000 hours of sacrificed screen time. St. Isidore Parish is on our way to a successful Lenten journey!

The Most Blessed Sacrament Group will hold its Annual Retreat at the Malvern Retreat House on the weekend of April 26th to 28th. All St. Isidore men & their sons are invited. For more information, please contact Jimmy McCarthy at 215-538-1874.

Easter Sunday – April 21st - Bulletin Deadline: Anyone wishing to place an announcement in the Easter Sunday bulletin must have it submitted to Father Riegler for approval by Monday, April 8th. Any announcement received afterwards will be included in the following week’s bulletin. (190)

My dear parishioners, The next several chapters in Luke’s

Gospel are built around themes rather than chronology. In part this is because Luke is seeking to provide guidance for the early Christian communities, largely Gentile by this time, as well as answer critics both outside of and within Christianity. Yes, even at this point Christianity was beset by critics who constantly found fault and by believers who thought they knew better. The latter is the reason why there are many Christian churches. Divisions began fairly early.

Jesus’confrontation with evil took many forms, including casting out demons. That exorcism was practiced by others seems to have been taken for granted in this exchange between Jesus and His critics. They accused Him of being the pawn of Satan (Beelzebul) which Jesus pointed out was an absurdity. Otherwise, using the analogy of a kingdom, there would be virtual civil war (i.e. devils versus devils). Does this mean that everyone who exorcizes is an instrument of the Devil?

This incident and those that follow may have been Luke’s way of reminding his fellow Christians that no matter how good the deed, there will be always critics because of their dislike of Christianity. And for those who demanded some clear indication from heaven testifying about the truth of His preaching, Jesus referenced the fabled preaching of Jonah and the wisdom of Solomon who dazzled the Queen of the South (Sheba). Jesus’ message was far more compelling and powerful to those who were open minded. Although this event makes sense within the context of Judaism, it also fits in with the paganism that Luke was familiar with. The will of the gods was manifested by extraordinary signs (earthquakes, storms, etc.). Jesus through His miracles offered even something far more powerful.

What follows is as much a commentary on Jesus’ critics as it is on controversies within the Christian community. Jesus was invited to dine with a Pharisee and as it turns out there were a number of Pharisees and doctors of the law present as well. There is a good chance that this was a set-up to catch Jesus at doing something they disapproved of. He did not disappoint. Instead of going through the elaborate protocol of washing his hands before the meal (it may have involved more than one’s hands), Jesus simply sat down. For that He was criticized. That seems to have set Him off for He proceeded to take issue with that rule and then go after the behavior of the Pharisees and lawyers. It must have shocked them for they were not used to being taken to task. If the Pharisees had any doubts about Jesus’ opinion of them before this, there was no doubt about it afterwards. This may have marked the beginning of their decision to eliminate Jesus. And as happens in much of Luke’s Gospel there is a message for the Christian communities that were experiencing growing pains. Jesus as one can readily appreciate avoided elaborate rules and regulations. This has been used to argue that Jesus never intended to found a Church. In fact, Jesus tried to keep it simple (K.I.S). Instead Christianity has had to deal with a multitude of rules, regulations, suggestions, etc. that are used to separate the devout from the occasional practitioner. The Church has been plagued with these minute rules that have driven out far more than have been made better Christians. It is why Jesus accused His Pharisees of usurping the chair of Moses. Our modern day Pharisees often usurp the throne of Jesus. Both faith and living out faith are difficult enough without complicating matters. What would Jesus do? Keep it simple.
