We always talk about the need to encounter Christ. But “what Christ” (I use this term figuratively) would we want to encounter? Most of

us would want to encounter Christ, the Good Shepherd, or Christ who has just offered for-giveness to a repentant sinner. But what about the angry Christ we encounter today, the Christ who turns over the tables of the money changers in the Temple? I remember seeing the movie The Great-est Story Ever Told when I was a kid in the theater. Max Von Sydow played the part of Jesus in that film. The scene where Jesus chases the money changers out of the Temple really unnerved me. It seemed, at first, that what was happening was so out of character for Jesus. But was it really? So, what about this angry Christ—why so angry? It’s not so much that Jesus lost his cool—that this was just an emotional outburst because he’d had a bad day and couldn’t control himself. Think of it this way: The Divine Passion to set things right. God is not only grieved at our sin, but he is positively angry at it, because he sees what it does to us and he wants to correct it.

Maybe we can see the Temple as ourselves. Remember St. Paul writes of our own bodies as “temples of the Holy Spirit”. And so, we might see this angry Christ turning things upside down as the Lord working within us, especially during this Lenten season, to set right what needs setting right. Would you be willing to allow Jesus, yes, the angry Jesus, into your life—into your hearts, your minds, into your relationships to shake things up. This may certainly be uncomfortable, but perhaps this can lead to some hard decisions and to some real change. The Divine Passion of Christ is rooted in love. When we are passionate about something we really care about it. Christ really cares about us and what we are doing with our lives. He passion-ately wants us to turn to him. He wants us to allow Him in, even if it is to “turn over” or “knock down” some things. We will be better persons for having allowed the Lord to do this for us.

Christ is not acting out of character. He’s perfectly acting in character because he’s acting out of love for us. The love that led Him to the cross and to the glory of the Resurrection.

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us. God the Father of Heaven, have mercy on us. God the Son, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on us. God the Holy Spirit, have mercy on us. Holy Trinity, One God, have mercy on us.

And prince over all his possessions. Let us pray. O God, who in your loving providence chose Blessed Joseph to be the spouse of your most Holy Mother, grant us the favor of having him for our intercessor in heaven whom on earth we venerate as our protector. You, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. Source: Consecration to St. Joseph | Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC

Litany of St. Joseph

March 19: St. Joseph - The Young Husband of Mary In 1981, Mother Angelica founded the Eter-

nal Word Television Network (EWTN). Her blessed network is an extremely successful and fruitful Catholic media apostolate. Mother Angelica’s common sense, simple wisdom, and unwavering orthodoxy have catechized the hearts and minds of millions of people around the world. Mother Angelica died in 2016, but EWTN continues to lead many people to Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church.

Mother Angelica loved St. Joseph. On one occasion, during a live telecast, a caller asked her a question about St. Joseph. The question went something like this: “Mother Angelica, do you think St. Jo-seph was old or young? Moth-er Angelica answered with her classic wit, responding: “Well, my dear, that’s a good ques-tion. There is no official Church teaching on whether or not St. Joseph was old or young, but I prefer a young Joseph. All I know, sweetie, is old men don’t walk to Egypt!”

Mother Angelica’s straightforward answer makes a lot of sense. Not only would an elderly man not be capable of walking to Egypt, but an old man wouldn’t be able to walk from Nazareth to Bethlehem, either; Bethlehem is 80 miles from Nazareth, and the journey would have been across rough desert terrain. St. Joseph was required to walk a lot to support the Holy Family. After walking 80 miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem, St. Joseph was in-structed by an angel to take the Child and his mother to Egypt. This required St. Joseph to take his family on another very long journey. The dis-tance from Bethlehem to the border of Egypt is 40 miles. No historian believes the Holy Family lived on the border. Rather, they went much far-ther into Egypt where there was the possibility of work, food, and some semblance of civilization. We don’t know exactly where Jesus, Mary, and Joseph settled down in Egypt, but it did require them to walk farther than the border.

Have you ever been to the Holy Land or North Africa? If you have, you know that the ter-rain is rough, the heat intense, and the dangers many. Walking to Egypt, being there for years without knowing anyone, and trying to make a living are not things associated with elderly men. And then, after many years of living in Egypt, St. Joseph learned from the angel that Herod was dead. St. Joseph was now required to

pack up his family and walk from Egypt all the way back to Nazareth. That’s more than 120 miles! The distance from New York City to Philadelphia is 92 miles. Add another 30 miles, and that’s what St. Jo-seph had to do. There was no Jersey Turnpike, with smooth roads and cozy rest stops along the way. It was uphill, downhill, and around hills. The endless walking didn’t stop once the Holy Family reached Nazareth ei-ther. As faithful Jews, the men of the household were re-

quired to travel to Jerusalem three times a year to fulfill the Law of the Lord. “Three times a year all your men shall appear before the Lord, the God of Israel” (Ex 34:23). Remember: That’s 80 miles one way. That is a lot of walking! St. Joseph could not have been an old man when he espoused Mary. Old men don’t walk to Egypt. They don’t walk three times a year from Nazareth to Jerusalem either. Good Father St. Joseph, I thank you for having watched over my Mother Mary while you were on earth. -Servant of God Sr. Mary Martha Chambon. We wonder why the Gospel makes so little mention of St. Joseph. But did it not say every-thing when it taught us that he was the husband of Mary? -Blessed William Joseph Chaminade. I see him [St. Joseph] as a strong, young man, perhaps a few years older than Our Lady, but in the prime of his life and work. -St. Jose-maría Escrivá. Source: Consecration to St. Joseph | Fr. LAST WEEK: What are the various elements of priests’ vestments?

SJN will be participating in a parish-wide survey about discipleship conducted by the Catholic Leadership

Institute and we need your help!

On March 19th, our survey will open – help us by participating! It will take about 10-15 minutes and will be available online and by paper.

Your spiritual growth is important to our parish. Your views will inform our SJN outreach & spiritual growth efforts.

All individual survey responses are anonymous to SJN. Information is only shared as a whole community.

Learnings will be shared with the entire parish.

The survey will ask you to reflect on your own spiritual growth and will offer an opportunity to provide feedback on our parish’s efforts to help you grow.

We’d like the highest response rate possible: your insights will be invalu-able to Msgr. Matz and the future direction of our parish as we plan to be

the best disciples we can be. Thank you!

March 17: St. Patrick, 387- 461

St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints. He was born in Roman Britain and when he was fourteen or so, he was captured by Irish pirates during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. At the time, Ireland was a land of Druids and pagans but Patrick turned to God and wrote his memoir, The Confession. In The Confession, he wrote: "The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was moved, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same. I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain." Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britain and was reunited with his family. A few years after returning home, Patrick saw a vi-sion he described in his memoir: "I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: 'The Voice of the Irish.' As I be-gan the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea-and they cried out, as with one voice: 'We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us.'" The vision prompted his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre (France), whom he had studied under for years, and was later ordained a bishop and sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. Patrick arrived in Slane, Ireland on March 25, 433. There are several legends about what happened next, with the most prominent claiming he met the chieftan of one of the druid tribes, who tried to kill him. After an intervention from God, Patrick was able to convert the chieftain and preach the Gospel throughout Ireland. There, he converted many people -eventually thousands - and he began building churches across the country. He often used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity and entire kingdoms were eventually con-verted to Christianity after hearing Patrick's message. Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461. He died at Saul, where he had built the first Irish church. He is believed to be buried in Down Cathedral, Downpatrick. His grave was marked in 1990 with a granite stone. Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. So complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission, he feared nothing -not even death. "The Breastplate," Patrick's poem of faith and trust in God: "Christ be within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ be-neath me, Christ above me, Christ inquired, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger."
