Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time w September 8th, 2019Wis 9:13-18b w Philem 9-10,12-17 w Luke 14:25-33

Paz: P. Joe

Dear Parishioners,If September 8th this year wasn’t a Sunday, we would be

celebrating the Feast of the Nativity of Mary. While there is no mention in the Bible of Mary’s birth, as there is for Jesus, there is a 2nd century non-Bible or non-canonical text, the Protoevangelium of James, that mentions her birth and gives the names Anne and Joachim to her parents.

Since our parish is in the midst of celebrating the Season of Creation and since the Church traditionally celebrates Mary’s birthday during this Season each year, it might be good for us to reflect on what Pope Francis writes about Mary in his encyc-lical, Laudato Sí: On Care for our Common Home.

“Mary, the Mother who cared for Jesus, now cares with ma-ternal affection and pain for this wounded world. Just as her pierced heart mourned the death of Jesus, so now she grieves for the sufferings of the crucified poor and for the creatures of this world laid waste by human power. Completely transfigured, she now lives with Jesus, and all creatures sing of her fairness. She is the Woman, “clothed in the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars” (Rev 12:1). Carried up into heaven, she is the Mother and Queen of all creation. In her glorified body, together with the Risen Christ, part of creation has reached the fullness of its beauty. She treasures the entire life of Jesus in her heart (cf. Lk 2:19,51), and now understands the meaning of all things. Hence, we can ask her to enable us to look at this world with eyes of wisdom.”

Recognizing that our world is wounded and that we need eyes of wisdom, I want to encourage you to attend our parish forum next Sunday, The Earth is Crying: What is Our Response? Our participation in this forum will surely provide us with a way to share with Mary in her maternal care for our wounded world.

Another opportunity for us to celebrate the Season of Cre-ation will be with Fr. Joseph O’Keefe, S.J., on Thursday, Sep-tember 19th as he explores with us the Four Jesuit Universal Apostolic Preferences, one of which is “to collaborate in the care of our Common Home.”

I am certain that these two programs will be personally en-riching and also help us, as a faith community, to grow in our witness as authentic disciples of Jesus.

Peace,Fr. Joe

Peace, Justice & Reconciliation Green Team Prayer

Oh Lord, as we enter the Season of Creation, let us “dare to turn what is hap-pening to the world into our own personal suffering and thus discover what

each of us can do about it” (LS 19)

Action - Celebrate Diversity in Your NeighborhoodTake a slow walk through your neighborhood. What is going on? What are you seeing? Smelling? Hearing? In this season of creation, “wake up” to what is alive around us and to our own sense of being alive. See the

face of God in all.

Please remember to join us on Friday, September 20th for “All Ages Climate Strike." Details to follow.

Scripture passage to pray about during the week:

“Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disci-ple.” Luke 14:27

Protecting immigrants and advocating for their rights often means confronting those who doubt and ridicule, and even criminalize our efforts. Am I willing to carry the cross of these confrontations to

follow Jesus?

Healthier Priests. Stronger Communities.

Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.

The strength and vibrancy of our communities depend largely on the welfare of our priests who tirelessly serve others from all walks of life.

Powerful examples of strength in community are visible across 144 cities and towns of the Archdiocese of Boston. The roots of these communities can be traced back to the work of our priests.

Pine Street Inn: A Boston priest was one of the original founders of Pine Street Inn, which provides shelter and emergency services for nearly 2,000 homeless men and women in the Boston area every day.

Cor Unum: Started by a Lawrence pastor, Cor Unum (“One Heart”) food pantry serves more than 250,000 meals annually to poverty-stricken families in Lawrence.

Addiction Support for Families: A Boston priest’s expertise in addiction and recovery has been instrumental for organizations helping families and individuals in the grips of addiction.

Rostro de Cristo: Efforts to help the poor on the margins of Ecuador’s largest city is hard work, except for those who have been inspired by a Boston priest who started Rostro de Cristo, an organization based in Boston that lives the Gospel and serves the poor.

It’s simple: healthier priests mean stronger communities. Please support clergytrust.org
