THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

PASTOR’S DESK

3/19/2017

"It's going to outlast all of us."

- Antoni Meloni, Artist

One evening last week Msgr. John McGuirl and I

attended a concert at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. When I

stepped off the train at the Bellerose Station on my

way home, a long New York and Atlantic freight train

passed, going westbound. That’s headed for the Fresh

Pond yard, I thought to myself. The cars will be sorted

and attached to other trains going north over the Hell

Gate Bridge. Freight trains have been crossing the Hell

Gate – officially known as the East River Arch Bridge

– for exactly a century.

The New York Connecting R.R. built the bridge in

1917 so that freight cars that arrived in Bay Ridge or

Long Island City on barges could make a fast connec-

tion with the New Haven R.R. for movement north and

east. Since the advent of Amtrak the Hell Gate has

been handling passenger trains as well.

What was once dubbed “The Greatest Bridge in the

World” is held together with precisely 1.17 million

rivets. “It’s bigger than you think, and when you get up

there, it’s gargantuan,” declared Dave Frieder, who is

writing a coffee table book about bridges in New York

City. Did you know that the two stone towers are

purely decorative? Gustav Lindenthal, the bridge’s de-

signer, felt that without them the bridge would not look

right.

Cont.

“On this rock I will build my church and the gates

of hell shall not prevail against it,” Jesus said to Simon

Peter. The Catholic Church is the original Hell Gate

Bridge, allowing communicants to pass safely over the

turbulent waters of this world to the shore of heaven.

The Church is the Mystical Body of Christ – the

One who came to be the bridge linking our humanity

and the Father’s divinity. Throughout the later Sundays

of Lent in Year A, we see Jesus acting as a bridge. To

the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus becomes the

way out of the hell of her marital history. To the man

born blind, Jesus becomes the bridge that leads him out

of the hellish condition of blindness. To Lazarus, Jesus

is the bridge over which he can pass from the hell of

his tomb and the corruption of his flesh to new life.

Happy 100th Birthday, East River Arch Bridge.

May you ever put us in mind of Jesus and His Church.

2017 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL
