JUNE 16, 2019 Rectory: 7320 Fourth Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11209 Telephone: (718) 836-7200 / Fax: 718-238-2466 / Website: www.ourladyofangelsparish.org THIS IS THE HOLY TRINITY Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity, one of the most confounding mysteries of our faith. Through this mystery we experience our relationship to God: Creator, Savior, and Holy Spirit. This relationship is not easy to under- stand or to describe. It does not become clearer through analysis. Its complexity mirrors the complexity of all our relationships. We understand our relationships with our spouses, our children, our parents, and our friends only through daily give-and-take, annual rituals, and the life- changing moments we share. We understand our relationships only as we live them. The relationships we have with those we love, and who love us, sustain us through an uncertain and difficult life. This is the Holy Trinity. What is striking about today’s readings is that each is incomplete. What they do offer is a description of a moment in our relationship, a memory of a time and an event when our relationship made sense even though that sense may be beyond our ability to describe fully. Often that is all that our faith offers, that is, a memory of what is possible, what is promised, what has been given. A memory of eternity, of love beyond understanding is to be cherished and nurtured even if not fully understood. This is the Holy Trinity. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Dear Parishioners,

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity which was the patronal feast of my

second parish assignment in Williamsburg.

Today is also the 75th birthday of our Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, so please keep him in your

prayers today.

If you were at the 12:00pm mass last Sunday, you are already familiar with the rest of this letter since

it was the homily of that mass.

Back in April, each of the seven parishes in our deanery sent members of their parish councils,

trustees and finance boards to a meeting at St. Andrew’s Church. The purpose of the meeting was to share

statistics about the priest personnel of our diocese and to engage those present for their reactions.

I think today, Pentecost Sunday, is a good day to share some of the information with you.

There are 187 parishes in Brooklyn and Queens. That is down from 230 back in the 1960’s. So

there has been a decline of 43 parishes.

While some of the parishes merged or joined to form one parish, the pastor there has two parish

plants to go back and forth. Three of our priests have three parish plants forming one parish.

The most startling fact is that we in the Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights Deanery have a ratio of one priest

to 330 people. Up in the north of Queens, the ratio is one priest to 2500 people. We are spoiled in a sense.

What does this mean? Well, on the first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to the Blessed Mother and

the Apostles in the Cenacle and breathed an enthusiasm into them – not a fright or terror but a hope filled

conviction that they would adjust their living to serve the infant church.

How? By moving from place to place, by the witness of their words and the actions of their daily

living.

They weren’t deterred by negative reports. They saw challenge and opportunity because Christ

promised to be with them.

No one knows exactly what the future holds but Pentecost today in Bay Ridge in 2019 means more

involvement in your parish. Fewer priests, older priests means stepping up to help in a variety of ways.

Pentecost today means an openness to the Holy Spirit’s direction, just as happened in Jerusalem

2000 years ago.

Let’s pray for each other,

Msgr. Kevin B. Noone

P.S. I am very grateful to the Woods family for their generous

contribution of $2,500.00 which they shared with the parish as a

result of the “Dan Jam” in memory of Danny Woods. Other

charities were also recipients of their generosity.

Goal: $99,584.00 Pledged: $90,357.00 Paid: $74,251.41 Donors: 192
