IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY NOVEMBER 10, 2019

From the Pastor’s Desk

The following quotes on prayer are from a wonderful spiritual director of our days, Fr Henri Nouwen (1932-1996). He had a down to earth style that at the same time was uplifting and transformative. And most of all, in my opinion, he was ferociously honest with his own struggles and challenges that made him all the more endearing. The 18 quotes were prepared by prayer-coach.com. Enjoy!

1. Joy is the experience of knowing that you are unconditionally loved.

2. Prayer is first of all listening to God. It’s openness. God is always speaking; he’s always

doing something.

3. I am deeply convinced that the necessity of prayer, and to pray unceasingly, is not as

much based on our desire for God as on God’s desire for us. It is God’s passionate pur-

suit of us that calls us to prayer.

4. A spiritual life without prayer is like the Gospel without Christ.

5. It might sound strange, but God wants to find me as much as, if not more than, I want to

find God.

6. The only way to pray is to pray, and the way to pray well is to pray much.

7. The real “work” of prayer is to become silent and listen to the voice that says good

things about me.

8. I know the only way for me to see the world is to see it through his eyes.

9. To pray, I think, does not mean to think about God in contrast to thinking about other

things, or to spend time with God instead of spending time with other people. Rather, it

means to think and live in the presence of God.

10. Converting our unceasing thinking into unceasing prayer moves us from a self-centered

monologue to a God-centered dialogue.

11. Prayer without action grows into powerless pietism, and action without prayer degen-

erates into questionable manipulation.

12. If prayer leads us into a deeper unity with the compassionate Christ, it will always give

rise to concrete acts of service.

13. Prayer is not what is done by us, but rather what is done by the Holy Spirit in us.

14. To pray means to stop expecting from God the same small-mindedness, which you dis-

cover in yourself. To pray is to walk in the full light of God and to simply, without hold-

ing back, “I am human and you are God.”

15. Why is it so important that you are with God and God alone on the mountain top? It’s

important because it’s the place in which you can listen to the voice of the One who calls

you the beloved. To pray is to listen to the One who calls you my beloved daughter, my

beloved son, my beloved child. To pray is to let that voice speak to the center of your

being, to your guts, and let that voice resound in your whole being.

16. If we don’t have a hidden life with God, our public life for God cannot bear fruit.

17. The faithful discipline of prayer reveals to you that you are the blessed one and gives

you the power to bless others.

18. To pray is to listen to the One who calls you “my beloved daughter,” “my beloved son,”

my beloved child.”

A Veteran’s Prayer I asked for strength that I might achieve,

God made me weak that I might obey. I asked for health that I might do great things, I was given grace that I might do better things.

I asked for riches that I might be happy, I was given poverty that I might be wise.

I asked for power that I might have the praise of men,

I was given weakness that I might feel the need for God.

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life, I was given life that I might enjoy all things.

I received nothing that I asked for, My prayer was answered.

GOD BLESS OUR VETERANS & THOSE WHO SERVE US IN THE MILITARY TODAY

Our annual Thanksgiving food col-lection is coming! We ask all students in grades K-8 to bring in food to be donated to our very own food pan-try. All items will be collected on Wednesday, November 13 & Mon-day, November 18 Food should be brought to the auditorium on these days. Thank you for your support.

Dear friends in the Lord:

The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) was established by Pope St. John Paul II in 1985 to provide the Church’s full range of pastoral ministries to those in the United States Armed Forces. The mission of the archdiocese is “serve those who serve” by providing the same pastoral care and services as any other Catholic diocese, but to Catholics serving in the armed forces; enrolled in military academies; undergoing treatment in any of the 153 departments of veteran’s affairs medi-cal centers in the USA, Puerto Rico, and Guam; working in civilian jobs for the federal government be-yond United States borders; and families of these populations.

The AMS is the only source of Catholic chaplains for the military and VA medical centers. Its endorsed priests are responsible for pastoral ser-vices to 1.8 million Catholics. It receives no funding from the military of government in support of its programs vital to its mission and ministry, in-cluding vocations, evangelization and catechesis, the keeping of sacramental records, a tribunal and veteran’s affairs. It has no parishes of its own, and no weekly collections. It relies solely on the generosity of private donations.

As I write to you today, I ask you to consider a sacrificial gift to the triennial appeal for the mil-itary archdiocese. It will be collected this weekend, November 9th & 10th. Your generous support will help the AMS to bring the gospel and the sacraments to men and women to serve our country and defend our freedoms, including parishioners and families from our own diocese.

With gratitude and prayerful best wishes, I am,

Faithfully in Christ,

Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York
