Mother’s Day was very special this year. Bev Ogren delivered an exceptional sermon based on Psalm 46:10. As shown, Sue, Kathy, Roz and Marie assisted, as did Vera (not shown). It’s hard to imagine who will want to follow that one! This year’s Women’s Retreat group. The theme was “Spirituality vs. Religion” - an interesting topic. It was another great weekend. As mentioned above, Penny led but new leadership will be sought for next year. All women of the church are invited to attend. June 2013 Greetings from your church, June means many things, among them Children’s Day on the 9 . th Don’t miss worship that morning as the children share their significant talent with us all. June also brings the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. As many of you know, Madeline McNeilly has been raising money to dig a well in Malawi. The Mission Committee has voted to adopt Madeline and her project as part of our OGHS collection this year. Through your gifts to OGHS, whatever is needed to finish the well will be provided. This Sunday, 6/2, Madeline has agreed to be interviewed during our worship service. In her own voice you’ll hear her inspiring story. I think this is sooo cool. Any additional money raised will be sent through usual OGHS channels. Thanks for your generosity this year. During Lent, Sandra LaPerche led a bible study/discussion group. It was very well received and therefore “by popular demand” the group will meet monthly, on the third Monday at 2:00 PM. During the summer, given how hot it is, they will meet in Sandra’s air-conditioned home. Watch for dates and updates regarding “Open Hearts” . . . and thanks to Sandra for sharing her knowledge and time through this excellent addition to our church’s ministry. Labor Day is early this year - Sept. 2, and therefore if you back-up ten Sundays, we find the first Union Service in June. Please take note. We are hosting the first two. Hope to see you at summer services. June 23 , usually a quiet day at church, will be anything but quiet this year. As the service begins, rd Craig Hess will enter the waters of baptism. Congratulations Craig! As the service continues, we will have Dedication of Children with a number of our young families/children. It’s always a blessing to join in this covenant of Christian nurture. Following worship, a brunch to thank and honor Penny Olsen for her retreat leadership is planned. Penny led twelve retreats and touched the lives of dozens of Green Street women. While not official, she is definitely a part of our church family. And then, later that afternoon, a group will head to Grotonwood for a tour of the facility and ride around Lost Lake on their new pontoon boat. As I said, anything but a sleepy day in the ministry of our church! Hope to see you at church early and often in the weeks ahead. Blessings to you and yours! gift cards, cleaning supplies, clothing, generators and building supplies contributed to the recovery of members, neighbors and friends. In the midst of calamity, joy abounded!

“We do not have words to adequately express our gratitude to you and to the ministry of One Great Hour of Sharing for your

generosity to us in the wake of Hurricane Sandy,” writes an ABCNJ church family. “When we give a gift to an ABC offering, never do we imagine ourselves potential recipients. Praise the Lord to be members of the family of God!”

A Haitian family, newly arrived in the United States, was one of hundreds of New Jersey families that OGHS blessed. The father, a minister, admitted that the aid he received left him with “an unforgettable memory.”

The Rev. Dr. Robert Prescott-Ezickson, senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Long Branch—an ABCNJ shore church—shares, “I want to again convey the deepest gratitude for your generous assistance through the One Great Hour of Sharing funds that you approved for our church.” By distributing OGHS supported assistance, the church was “able to be the presence and love of Jesus Christ” to people in deep need.

When you contribute to OGHS, you help those affected by natural disaster. Someday, that aid may be returned to your community or your own family.

One Great Hour of Sharing: Bringing Joy in New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy

When Hurricane Sandy slammed the New Jersey shore with fury and destruction, it reshaped the coast and impacted countless lives. Two million people lost power,

thousands of homes were flooded and countless trees were felled. Miraculously, none of the 284 churches of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey (ABCNJ) region suffered catastrophic damage, but dozens experienced flooding, broken windows and leaking roofs. Many individuals lost food, while others lost automobiles. Families were forced to relocate, churches held services in the cold and congregations sought to serve their communities.

ABCNJ, in cooperation with American Baptist Home Mission Societies, immediately mobilized to help pastors, churches and communities to recover. Two One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS)

grants totaling $70,000 were made available in the timeliest fashion. While one-third of the assistance provided churches with clean-up and rebuilding help, approximately two-thirds enabled churches to help people in the communities. Grocery
