September 2019
Blessed to be a Blessing Through your generosity and through the bequest of the Squires Estate, Central Presbyterian Church has made it
possible for international pastors to further their theological education in the United States and then return to their
home countries to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. We have been blessed by our friendships with the Rev.
Dr. Francis Acquah (Accra, Ghana) and the Rev. Dr. Redda Ibrahim (Assiut, Egypt). Each of them completed their
programs and are currently blessing congregations in their homelands. We are now sponsoring our third student: a Doctor of Ministry
candidate at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Father Maximos
Kevin Onyebuchi Nnachette (he has invited us to call him Father
Maximos) is from the
West African country of
Nigeria. He is one of six
children in his Roman
Catholic family. While
studying to be a Catholic
priest, Father Maximos
was invited by a friend to
an Orthodox worship
service. He was so
moved by the Divine
Liturgy that he joined the
Orthodox Church, be-
coming first a deacon
and then a priest. Father Maximos enjoys reading but also loves lawn ten-
nis, table tennis, and (of course) soccer. Nigeria’s national football team,
the Super Eagles, has qualified for six of the last seven FIFA World Cup
competitions. Father Maximos will be visiting Geneseo on Sunday, September 8. You
will have several opportunities to see, hear, and meet our newest scholar-
ship recipient on that day.
Church Family Breakfast: Bring a breakfast dish to share (if you
can) and join us at 8:45 am in Fellowship Hall for conversation with Father
Maximos and with friends new and old.
Worship: Be with us at 10 am for worship; Father Maximos will
preach.
Coffee Hour: Have questions about life in Niger ia? About Ortho-
doxy? Father Maximos will give a brief presentation and answer your
questions following worship during Coffee Hour. Come be blessed by the story and the words of Father Maximos as we together we share the joy of the wide, wel-
coming love of Christ Jesus.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28

Church Family Breakfast − September 8
On the first Sunday of every month, our entire
church family is invited to join the fun and fellowship as
we gather in the Social Hall PROMPTLY at 8:45 am for
breakfast. This is a wonderful way to stay in touch and to
grow together in our faith. Simply bring a dish to share
and a hearty appetite! Following breakfast, we encourage
families to worship together at 10:00 am. Our next
breakfast is on Sunday, September 8. Monday Morning Bible Study
Our Bible Study is on Monday mornings, at 10:30
am in the Jane Ward Room. Each week we will examine
the texts that Rev. Lowmaster will use as the basis for
her upcoming Sunday sermon. The discussion is always
lively! Come join us for a closer look at the Scriptures.
Dates for this month are September 9, 16, 23, 30

We pray God’s richest blessings be poured out on Miranda Moore and Tyler Carman (son of Danny and Jackie Carman), who were married in Nash-ville on July 16. Miranda and Tyler are living in Wellsville, NY, where they both are teachers. We also pray God’s grace be abundant in the lives of Erin Sweeney and Mrigaa Sethi, who were married in Buffalo on August 12. Erin and Mrigaa live in Singapore. Therefore what God has joined together,
let no one separate. (Mark 10:9)
We rejoice with Linda and Dick Hathe-way on the birth of their granddaughter, Gemma Lea, to Rick Hatheway and Lisa Davis.
People were bringing even infants to him
that he might touch them; and when the dis-
ciples saw it, they sternly ordered them not
to do it. But Jesus called for them and said,
"Let the little children come to me, and do
not stop them; for it is to such as these that
the kingdom of God belongs. (Luke 18:15-16)

Come meet our college students
and lend a hand to the church
Saturday, September 7 from 9:00 am - Noon
Every year an enthusiastic group of Geneseo college stu-
dent volunteers arrives here at Central to begin their
academic year by serving in the Geneseo area. In past
years, student volunteers have worked with CPC members
to wash windows, weed, paint, and generally help spruce
up our property. We will welcome this year’s group on Sat-
urday, September 8 at 9:00 am. Come, meet them and
work alongside them (and maybe bring a snack or two
to share).

Thank you to everyone who organized, worked, or ate at the Grill during the Geneseo Festi-
val! Because of your faithful service, CPC was able to donate more than $2500 to VFW

that let me escape. What is on your bucket list?
I would like to travel to all of the International Dark
Sky Reserves: 13 sites throughout the world that
have protected the darkness of their night sky.
What surprises you or inspires you? The wisdom of the youngest and oldest among us.
If you could have dinner with 3 people, who would be

my father. What would people never guess about you? That I played “Lucy” in my college’s production of

Strength, My Place of Hiding”, dated 1567) What is the best advice you have ever received? The Confirmation verse chosen for me by my childhood

ter Meredith’s nerdy obsession with the New York
Times Crossword Puzzle What would you most like to learn? How to play the bowed psaltery or bowed dulcimer.
And perhaps a foreign language that living people
speak.
Our featured staff member this month is our pastor, the Rev. Dr. Nancy Lowmaster. Pastor Nancy was ordained in August
2011 in her home church in Meadville, PA, following her graduation from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary where she earned her Master of Divinity degree. She was called and installed at CPC in September 2011. It is hard to believe Pastor Nancy has been serving in Geneseo for 8 years! We are so blessed by her many years of ministry with us.
Pastor Nancy and her husband, Tim, live in Geneseo. Tim serves as a deacon in our church and is a pharmacist in War-
saw, NY. They have three adult children who worship with us when they are visiting their parents: Meredith works in Boston as an animal research technician at Massachusetts General Hospital; Kaelyn and her husband Adam currently live in Arling-ton, VA, but are awaiting their next assignment from the State Department; and Ben does paralegal work at a Boston law of-fice that specializes in immigration law.
Prior to her life in ordained ministry, Nancy had a long teaching career in the Chemistry and the Education Departments at Allegheny College. She received her B.S. from Ohio Northern University, M.S. from The Pennsylvania State University, and Ph.D. from Cornell Uni-versity. She is currently completing a Doctor of Ministry degree through Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

MONDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
Our Bible Study will resume on Monday morn-ing, September 9, at 10:30 am in the Jane Ward Room. Each week we will exam-ine the texts that Pastor Nancy will use as the bases for her next Sunday sermon. The discussion is always lively! Please join us for a closer look at the Scriptures.

2019-20 Sunday School begins again September 8
Our Sunday School year will begin on September 8, when once again we will offer a nursery class for children from birth-K and a multi-age class for children grades 1-5. Any middle or high school students who are interested in as-sisting during Sunday School are also more than welcome to join us! On Communion Sundays, we will offer a special activity for our school-age children and then reunite them with their families in the sanctuary so that the family may receive the Lord’s Supper together. We are excited to start a new year of faith and learning!
CHURCH FAMILY
BREAKFAST
SEPTEMBER 8
Beginning September 8, and on the first Sunday of every month thereafter, our entire church family is invited to
join the fun and fellowship as we gather in the So-cial Hall PROMPTLY at 8:45 am for breakfast. This is a wonderful way to stay in touch and to grow to-gether in our faith. Especially if you have not at-tended a Church Family Breakfast in the past, come and discover all the excitement and savor the won-derful smells. Simply bring a dish to share and a hearty appetite! Following breakfast, we encourage families to worship together at 10:00 am.

25th Annual John Vonglis CPC Dreams Golf Tournament
Sunday, September 22 Our 25th annual golf tournament will be held Sunday, the 22nd of Sep-
tember, following worship, with the golfing portion of the event as a
shotgun at 12:30 at Old Hickory Country Club in Livonia. Again this
year, the awards/dinner portion will be held immediately following at Old
Hickory CC. This is our twelfth year remembering John Vonglis, with the
tournament named in his honor as: “The John Vonglis CPC Dreams Golf
Tournament.”
If you are interested in playing, please contact Anne Bishop at 259-
8282 (cell with messaging capability) or via email
([email protected]). If you have a particular foursome in mind,
please indicate. Cost for golfers this year will again be $60, including
cart and dinner. Dinner only will be $15. Hole sponsorships @ $50 are
welcomed!
Tai Chi for Arthritis Classes
beginning September 18 at CPC Tai Chi is an ancient, gentle martial art that
has been adapted over the centuries into sets of
movements that are practiced all over the world.
The list of Tai Chi’s physical and mental benefits
is long and continues to grow. One of the proven
benefits of Tai Chi is an improvement in arthritis.
This series of classes uses specific Tai Chi forms
to help students lessen the pain of arthritis and
improve strength and balance. CPC will be hosting Tai Chi for Arthritis clas-
ses on Wednesday and Friday mornings from
9:30-10:15 am in Fellowship Hall starting Sep-
tember 18 and running until November 8. Classes
are open to anyone over the age of 60 who has
arthritis. If you have questions, call Pam Maxson
(764-3365). Pre-registration is required; to regis-
ter, call the Livingston County Office for the Ag-
ing at 243-7520.
From the Organ Bench: Because music plays a large and important part in our worship, your church maintains a vocal choir and a handbell choir. The vocal group sings at every Sunday morning service, and the bells ring in worship once or twice a month. It is not an exaggeration to say that both of these groups are in desperate need of additional members. We are friendly and welcoming folk and rehearsals are productive and enjoyable. If you have any inclination to give us a try, please talk to David Hurd or to any member of the groups. We’d love to have you join us. Our weekly Wednesday rehearsals for Central’s Carillon Choir and The Chancel Choir will begin on September 4th with ringers at 5:45pm and singers at 7:00 pm.

you will be directed to that Smile account.

Thank You for a Successful Back to School Supply Drive!
Thank you for the backpacks, notebooks, pens, paper, index cards, pencils, highlighters, crayons, colored pencils, folders, rulers, glue sticks, scissors, and other school supplies that you donated to the children of Livingston County through CPC’s partnership with Catholic Charities. Through your generosity, we were able to fill three large totes.
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows gener-ously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compul-sion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

is a new pew card! The card is multi-colored pastels and lists many opportunities for you to
offer thanks both for the financial resources and for non-monetary gifts God has given you.
When the Call for the Offering is given during worship, you may feel called to respond by
pledging (or promising) to be God’s faithful servant for another week and placing a card in
the offering plate. Please take a moment to prayerfully consider the opportunities listed on
the card. If you choose to respond, know that you do so confidentially.
