Meeting Highlights of March 27, 2020

Jerry May provided these inspirational words in the invocation:

Dear God - We are in a bad time. There is sickness, fear, financial ruin, family stress, and death throughout our world like we have never seen. Amidst this chaos, as we are physically separated from being with our friends near and far, we are reminded of your endless love for us. We are thankful for the new skills we are learni ongn how to be a force for good by communicating in a way that wasn’t available until recently. This is an example of how you provide the tools and the will to survive and heal during a pandemic. Give wisdom to those in leadership and give them the vision to promote peace and good will among all peoples. Give empathy to those of us who can help others in need, especially those on the margins of society. Give strength to those caregivers who are helping those who are sick. Give your heal-ing touch to those who must deal with the death and sickness of family members. And imbed within us as Rotarians the spirit of our motto to serve others above ourselves. Amen and Shalom

President Bob opened the meeting with greetings to everyone. Zaneta provided some very helpful pointers as many of us were using Zoom for the very first time. David Hoffman filled in for Betty Waznis on the News at Noon, since her voice is still on the mend from the big cold. Lisa Johnson provided some excellent ideas for everyone on how social distancing does not mean self-isolating. Some of the suggestions: virtual happy hour, dinner with friends, surprise party with food delivery, an online book club, walk with a friend on facetime, send a letter, get pen pals and do it the pre-email way. Try something new! Lane Pearson, Rotary Foundation Chair, shared a video from Rotary International reminding us of our ongoing commitment to the eradication of polio through our Polio Plus campaign. Gary Bryant reported that Community Projects Committee recommended a donation of $2500 to the Commu-nity Through Hope organization that has been distributing food, diapers and dry goods to South County resi-dents. Another recommendation was to donate $1100 to the Southwestern College Foundation Cares Emergen-cy Grant program to assist students with rent, utilities, food and other needs. The Board has approved the rec-ommendations and is moving on the distribution of these funds. District Governor Marta Knight has announced small matching grants to address the pandemic. Our club will apply. Thanks everyone - great job!

100 Things to do While Stuck Inside Due to a Pandemic—Part 2

More fun ideas. Although remaining inside is a good way to protect yourself and others from the coronavirus, and is an important measure to help "flatten the curve" of daily cases that put pressure on our health care system, it could lead to a lesser evil: boredom and stir craziness. 26. Read all the New Yorker issues piled on your desk. 27. Will Tom Hanks into recovery from coronavirus by watching every Tom Hanks movie chronologically. 28. Knit or crochet. 29. Use Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangouts or Marco Polo to video chat with your long-distance friends. Zoom! 30. Try out at-home aerobics or yoga videos. Consider downloading a fitness app with curated workout playlists. 31. Look at yourself in the mirror. Attempt a self portrait with pencil and paper. 32. Take a bubble bath (bonus: Add a glass of wine). 33. Make a classic cocktail, from negronis to Manhattans and aperol spritzes. Don't forget the garnish. 34. Coloring books: They’re not just for kids. 35. Take time to reflect: What have you accomplished in the last year? What goals are you set-ting for yourself in the next year? 36. Write a short story or get started on that novel. 37. Actually try to reproduce something you see on Pinterest. Probably fail. Try again. 38. Clear out the family room and camp indoors with all blankets, popcorn and scary movies. 39. Finally get around to fixing that broken door knob and loose tile or cleaning scuffed up walls. 40. Acquire a foam roller and treat yourself to some physical therapy. 41. Pretend you're 13 years old and fold a square piece of paper into a fortune teller you put your thumbs and pointer fingers into. Proceed to tell fortunes.

42. Learn how to braid (fishtail, French, etc.) via YouTube tutorial.. 43. Throw out all your too-old makeup and products. (Tip: most liquid products have a small symbol on them noting expirations, usually six months to a year. This includes sunscreen!) 44. Interview your grandparents (over the phone, of course) and save the audio. Can you create an audio story or book with that file? 45. Go through your camera roll, pick your favorite pics from the past year and make a photo book or order framed versions online. 46. Go on a health kick and learn how to cook new recipes with ingredients you may not be using already, from miso to tahini. 47. Create a Google document of shows or movies you’re watching and share it among family and friends. 48. Make a list of things for which you are grateful. 49. Have your own wine tasting of whatever bottles you have at home. Make up stories about the journey of the grapes to your mouth. 50. Work on your financial planning, such as exploring whether to refinance your loan or ways to save more money.

Adventures with Rotarians: Spotlight on Jan Mellinger

Since most of us will not be going any where any time soon, we would like to share photos of recent adven-tures some of our club members have been on. This way, when the time is right again, we will know who we can ask for advice and more information. Jan Mellinger recently took a 17-day cruise through the Panama Canal. Some of the stops along the way in-cluded Curacao pictured in the top photo (strongly resembling Amsterdam) and the Panama Canal (bottom photo). Reed and Beta Dinsmore were also on the trip which departed from Fort Lauderdale and included stops in Curacao, Aruba, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Huatulco (Mexico), Puerto Vallarta, ending in San Diego. They all highly recommend it.

Adventures with Rotarians (continued) - Spotlight on Jan

Left: Jan hard at work in a cooking class in Puerto Vallarta, where she made a salsa in a molcajete, then a pork enchilada, and chicken tostada—all while looking at the Pacific Ocean. Right: This is a macadamia nut farm they visited in Antigua, Guatemala.

KEEPING OUR SENSE OF HUMOR...

How long is this social distancing supposed to last?

My husband keeps trying to get into the house.
