Christie Downs Design Workshop

Introduction to the Design WorkshopPresented by

Natalie Fuller

The benefits of this approach

• Sometimes called a ‘Charrette’

• Intensive process over the next 2 days

• Build on what we already know:– Consultations already undertaken– Work undertaken by Council and other agencies

• Explore opportunities to:– Make the area safer and more vibrant– Improve the quality, accessibility and viability of shops– Improve open space

• Develop options for Morton Reserve and surrounds

The workshop

The benefits of this approach:

• Brings together the expertise of designers and community

• Builds on technical knowledge

• Very focused and intensive process

• Time efficient

• Open and transparent

• An opportunity for all to work towards shared solutions

What is an Urban Design Workshop? The workshop:

• Will build on the design principles already developed based

on developed through community feedback

• Will test the options against these design principles

• Is not a talk-fest! It will involve pens, paper and developing

real plans

• Is not a decision making process. It is a design process with

outputs to be reviewed by Onkaparinga Council. The final

Master Plan determined by Council.

Planning Process

Planning Process

Railway

Electrification and potential station upgrade

Currently low patronage > 480 trips per day

Isolation and access issues

DTEI views on station upgrade• No decision – no guarantee

• Need to generate a significant increase in ridership and safety

(eg at least shopping centre relocation)

• Best time is with resleepering in the first half of 2011

• Any design to be costed against budget & may be revised to suit

• Potentially could shift station towards Flaxmill Rd and construct

walkways connected to the bridge across Flaxmill Rd.

• Not seeking to retain land currently used for car parking and sees

this being incorporated into a mixed use precinct.

• Will make decision following outcome of workshop

Shopping and services

• Existing neighbourhood shopping centre• Request to relocate and expand

shopping centre to a mixed use centre adjacent railway station

• Flaxmill Road frontage important

Housing (Christie Downs)
