OBSERVING LENT
“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves,
pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
2 Chronicles 7:14, NRSV
In the Church, we are about to join in a journey of prayer, repentance and
seeking God’s face. The Christian season of Lent is a forty day period of spiritual
preparation for the Easter celebration (not counting Sundays). It begins on Ash
Wednesday, and lasts until Holy Saturday on the eve of Easter. Lent has its roots in the
ancient church, when converts would engage in fasting in preparation for baptism at
Easter. It became a time of fasting and repentance for all believers. The forty days of
Lent are a reminder of Israel’s forty years in the wilderness, and of Jesus’ forty days of
temptation. God shaped and prepared the people through the years in the desert. Jesus
showed his obedience and strength of purpose when tempted. What might God do
with us, and what might we demonstrate of obedience to God in the forty days before
Easter this year?
The words from 2 Chronicles are spoken by God to King Solomon after the
dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem. They offer hope to the future generations of
Israelites. If they strayed from following God’s laws and thus experienced divine
discipline in their land, then by a sincere return to the LORD, their prayers would be
heard and they would again experience God’s blessing. As we will soon journey
through Lent to Easter, God’s promise is appropriate for us, too. As God’s people
through faith in Jesus Christ, have we lost our way a bit, and become entangled in sin?
Have we put ourselves and our concerns at the center of life, and pushed God to
second, third or fourth place? Have we wounded our neighbor by our words or our
deeds? Now is a time for prayer. Now is a time to turn from our wickedness and all
that would tempt us, and to seek God’s face.
Let us seek God in the upcoming season of Lent! Ash Wednesday falls on February
10 this year, and Lent will continue until Holy Saturday on March 26. I encourage you
to seek God by prayer, fasting and self-denial in these days. Take the time to participate
in worship on Sunday mornings, and in Sunday School classes or small group meetings.
Here is one more way to seek God’s face: Christ Church will again be participating in
ecumenical Lenten services on Ash Wednesday and on Sundays at 7:00 P.M. May
God’s Spirit move in each of us, that we may be a holy people, well-prepared to rejoice
in the resurrection of our Savior when Easter arrives!
Peace in Christ,
Pastor Jason

Happy February! It is hard to believe that we are already over halfway through the school year. The students amaze me each and every day with how much they learn and grow. We have a busy month ahead of us. We will be fo-cusing on health all month. This will include dental health, nutrition, physical health, and how to keep germs from spreading. The Bible verse for the month is John 3:16. Since February is the month of love, this verse is a great way to teach the children about God’s love for us. Have a great month!

1 Year DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL SOMEONE
HERE AT CHURCH?
SEND THEM SOME CANDY OR FLOWERS
TO SHOW THEM YOU CARE!
FEBRUARY FLOWER/CANDY DELIVERY
Once again, to help offset the costs of the upcoming Ladies
Retreat, we are asking for your participation in our Valentine
fundraiser. We would like to deliver candy and / or flower(s) to a
special person of your choice during the month of February.
Starting the week of January 31st, we will be accepting orders
to deliver candy/flower(s) the following Sunday. A note card will
be available for you to personalize your delivery and the cost is
$1.50/carnation - $2.00/rose - $1.50/candy bar
If the person you are sending a flower(s) to is not at Sunday
School the following week when we deliver —We will make every
attempt to see that they receive their flower/card from you the
following week. We have been very lucky that the flowers have
kept very well in order for us to deliver. If it is a candy bar that you
are sending and they are not in Sunday School—we will put it in
the refrigerator with their name on it and try to re-deliver it the
following week.
We will be doing the bulk of our sales by orders, but we will have
some limited items for same day cash and carry.
If anyone is interested in a personalized small (or large) flower
arrangement at a reasonable price, please see or call Donna
Rowland at 252-2700. You can give Donna a specific dollar range
amount that you would want to spend and she will make an
arrangement within that price range.
Also, as an alternative to the above, if you would like to place
names in the February 14th church bulletin in memory/in honor of
someone, at a cost of $1/name, there will be a box and order
forms on the table in back of the sanctuary for you to take
advantage of this. The DEADLINE FOR THE BULLETIN NAMES
is February 7th. If you have any questions/concerns/ideas please
call Alice Staats 252-1758. Thank you!
