Christ the King Mission Statement We are a parish of Disciples, guided by the Holy Spirit and strengthened by the Eucharist.

We live the mission of Jesus Christ in our love and service to others.

In the First Reading today, King David has a very good idea. He is moved to action by the fact that he lives in “a house of cedar” while the Ark of the Covenant lives in a tent. He wants to do something about it! So, he shares the plan with Nathan the prophet, who agrees that this is a good idea: “Go do whatever you have in mind, for the Lord is with you.”

So Nathan thought! But that night the Lord appeared with a message for Nathan to give to David. David’s plan was not evil; it was not against God’s law. God was not mad at David for having this concern that the Ark of the Covenant—which meant God’s presence among His people—should have a proper home. Yet, God had another plan.

The Lord did not want David to build Him a house; that would be the job of his son, Solomon. God’s plan for David was different. God wanted to establish a house for David, the King, which meant a dynasty, a kingdom that would endure and stand firm for ever. David wanted to make some sort of return to the Lord for all His blessings and benefits, but the Lord was not done blessing David. This promise of an eternal kingship for David’s house far surpassed all of the other promises that God made to David.

God’s promise to David would pass through all the ups and downs, all the uncertainties of the history of God’s people, Israel. There would be many unfaithful kings, many foreign rulers that conquered Israel, many heartaches and disappointments, before that amazing day when the Word of God became flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary.

“The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary…”

Mary, too, must have had some idea of what her life would look like. She loved God more than anything and would have loved to build something beautiful for God. The only thing that was greater than these wonderful dreams of serving and loving God was her openness to change that plan, to serve God when and how He made Himself known.

“Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Mary could never have guessed which way the Lord would move or work in her life. She could not imagine for herself the “hundred fold” that God would give her in this life. And neither can we! But she had faith—and we are inspired by her faith—that God’s plan and God’s way are infinitely more perfect and beautiful than anything we could come up with for ourselves.

Who of us could guess that God would give us His flesh and blood as food in the Eucharist or forgive our sins through a priest who is just as sinful as we are? Who of us could guess that God would become a tiny helpless baby, lying in a manger?

Let us open our heart to this God of surprises that continues to surprise us today, to build us “houses” that we could never imagine for ourselves, because He loves us. In Christ, Pastor

The 5 Year Celebration Continues…

Thanks be to God for the continuing year end support of the Saint Peregrine Cancer Shrine Endowment Fund! The Endowment Fund began the year with a balance of $269,043.18. The Endowment Fund balance as of December 11, 2014 is $302,218.84. We continue to send endowment gift dollars to the Catholic Community Foundation and add to this balance weekly. Help us bring the endowment balance to $310,000.00 before the close of the year; an additional $7,781.16. Has someone in your family been affected by cancer? Are you being called to give thanks to God for the gift that the Shrine has been to you or someone that you love? Please prayerfully consider making a gift that ensures the continued growth of the Saint Peregrine Cancer Shrine Endowment Fund as we build the fund toward a $2million dollar balance! Thank you! We continue to encourage gifts through the end of the year. Every $100 donation generates a raffle ticket for a $2,000 US Airways Travel Voucher. There are many ways to make your gift; Two of the easiest and most convenient methods are through the use of the Kiosk in the back of the church, or online through the Shrine website.

The Giving Kiosk is located on the north wall of the church lobby. Use of the kiosk is very simple: 1. Choose your gift amount. 2. Choose whether this is a one-time or recurring gift. 3. Swipe your credit or debit card.

The St. Peregrine Cancer Shrine website is: www.cancershrine.org

Donation cards may also be found at the back of the church next to the Kiosk. Please follow the directions on the card if this is your desired method of giving. At this time of the year we reflect on the gift of Christ to the world. We humbly acknowledge that all gifts come through Him and we are thankful for the opportunity to do the work of the Universal Church through the ministry of the St. Peregrine Cancer Shrine. We, as a community, pray with gratitude that we are able to bring strength for the journey to our brothers and sisters struggling with cancer.

Celebrate the Birth of our Lord by making a year end gift to Christ the King.

Are you considering a year end gift? Where is your heart called to give? We have received the greatest gift of our Lord and know as His disciples that “Wherever your treasure lies, there your heart will be.” Luke 12:32-48

Share a gift from your heart through your tithe, a gift to the Christ the King Catholic School Endowment or the

St. Peregrine Cancer Shrine Endowment Fund. See the many options available on the Parish website:

When she heard the voice of God calling her to be The instrument He needed to bring our world the King of kings,

She could not understand the wisdom of God’s plan And still she answered. Let it be, let it be, done unto me. When he heard the voice of God calling him to stand, And take the Virgin as his wife and teach her child to be a man, He could not understand the wisdom of God’s plan; But still he answered, “let it be”, “let it be done unto me.”

And we say “Yes Lord. We’re ready to receive.

Yes Lord, we’re ready to believe.

Let it be. Let it be done unto me.”

Wait For The Lord Jacques Berthier ©1984 GIA

Wait for the Lord, whose day is near

Wait for the Lord: be strong, take heart!

Pastor
