Happy Pentecost and Welcome to Christ Church! We are delighted
that you are worshipping with us. All baptized persons of every
denomination are welcome to receive communion at our altar. Please
introduce yourself to one of our greeters. You are invited to put on a
nametag as you come into church. You are also welcome to fill out a
pew card and place it in the offering plate or give it to an usher.
Please let an usher know if you are unable to come to the railing for
Communion and the clergy will come to you.
Are you looking for a church home? You are welcome to fill out a
pew card and place it in the offering plate. On it you can indicate
that you would like the clergy to call on you.
Out of respect for neighbors wishing for quiet time to pray before
the liturgy begins, please refrain from LOUD talking in the nave.
The altar flowers are given today in loving memory of John
McGahan, by Shirley McGahan; and in loving memory of Meg
Adam, by Kris Schickley.

volunteers who helped make our week of hosting families possible.
The Homeless Ministry is an opportunity for our church members to
spread love, grace, and thoughtfulness to members of the community
who are going through hard times. Our volunteers participated in so
many ways: from preparing and serving meals, to cleaning up, to
donating books, to reading stories and leading craft time with kids,
to fellowship with parents, to helping older kids play basketball at
the park, to serenading younger kids with a saxophone, to leading a
vibrant music class, to providing healthy breakfast choices…we
could go on and on. We are appreciative beyond words.
This heartfelt ministry was blessed to have well over 30 volunteers
from our church family who brought their hearts and skills and
talents and time to share a circle of support to guest families. We
4
most especially want to thank our constant beacon of kindness,
Jason Tustin, who stepped up and helped in immeasurable ways.
If you have any questions about how you can help the homeless
ministry in the future please speak to Maripat or Dresden.
We are pleased to report that our window campaign has been a great
success! We have now received pledges for every window needing
work. Thank you to everyone who pledged and contributed. We will
soon be scheduling with Willet Hauser to begin the refurbishment
work.
Seamen’s Ditty Bag collection for May comprises nail clippers and
sewing kits. Please leave the items in the bin under the shelf near
the green doors. Thank you!
Please check out the Youth Table in the Deppich Room! Thanks to
Sharon Mobley for donating so many gorgeous hand-crafted jewelry
items to our table, and to Nan Garthwaite, Ruth Pottier, Ruth
Raymond, and Carol King for things sewn and/or knitted! We also
have copies of The Toddler’s Bible and The Children’s Bible, on the
table.
The Hospitality Committee extends a very heartfelt thank you to
everyone in our church who generously donated food items, helped
setup or cleanup during our Lenten dinners. A big thank you as well
to everyone who provided desserts for our Maundy Thursday
meatloaf dinner. You all outdid yourselves! Special thanks to Sue
McFaul, Elsie Witman, Kathy Okarski, Judy Yorke and Nancy
Mobley for their invaluable assistance in preparing this dinner.
The Mottola family and your Hospitality Committee were deeply
touched by the outpouring of love and support as we planned the
funeral luncheon for Virginia and Anthony. We thank you for your
contributions to the dessert table (awesome treats!) as well as those
who helped with the setup and cleanup of Musselmann Hall. Thank
you as well to Ruth Pottier for her assistance with the flower
centerpieces. Words don’t seem adequate to express how much all of
your efforts have made a difference. We love our Church family!

the bin upstairs. As always, thank you for your generosity.
Confirmation There will be a confirmation class this summer from
July 16-July 19 for youth ages 12 and up, taught by Reverend Judy
and Susan Francis. Because the diocese asks for 16 hours of
preparation for confirmation, the class will run for four hours daily,
from 9:30-1:30. Additionally, there is homework every evening.
Since there is also work that must be done before the class begins,
and special materials must be ordered, it is important that those who
plan to attend are signed up by Sunday, July 1. The class is intensive,
but we also strive to make it interesting and fun. Attendees should
plan to bring a lunch. There is a signup sheet on Judy Buck-Glenn’s
office door.
If you travel, your unused hotel toiletries (soap, shampoo, creams,
deodorant, toothbrush, dental floss, etc…) can be donated to the
homeless. There is a bin by the green doors for donations. We pack
them up every year on the MLK Volunteer Day to take to the
Salvation Army for distribution to their homeless clients.
The children of the Sunday School support two children through
ChildFund. Clara, from Guatemala and Mac-Mac, from the
Philippines. The money to support these children comes from the
weekly Sunday School collection, children’s mite boxes, our annual
6
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, and the Children’s Pew envelopes.
Their support costs $1200 a year. Adults who wish to help may make
a donation using a CHILDREN’S pew envelope, or write a check to
the church and put “ChildFund” in the memo.
Would you like to establish a fund for Christ Church through your
estate planning? Your restricted gift will ensure the continuation of
the ministry of Christ Church and will benefit your parish friends
and family for generations to come. Please speak to the rector if you
would like assistance in establishing such a fund.

The Day of Pentecost Sunday, May 20, 2018
A Note on Today’s Readings
The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday
The word “Pentecost” means fifty days. Today we celebrate of the
Lord’s resurrection, ascension, and his sending the Holy Spirit. The
presence of the Spirit in the Church continues Jesus’ saving work into
our own time. The presence of the Holy Spirit incorporates our lives into
the risen life of Christ and makes us part of his Body. This is one of the
four times in the year when Holy Baptism is particularly significant, for
it is in baptism that we receive the Spirit and are made partakers in the
resurrection life.
The reading from Acts is the account of the first Pentecost Day when the
Holy Spirit empowered the infant Church to proclaim Jesus as Lord to all
people. In the presence of people from many parts of the world, they
spoke the Word to all.
We gather in Eucharist as people reborn by water and the Holy Spirit in
baptism. Gifted with God’s Spirit, we are sent to proclaim good news to
every people and language and nation and to be built into a royal
priesthood in Christ.

and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever
and ever. Amen.

First Reading Ezekiel 37:1-14
All sit.
A Reading from the book of Ezekiel.
The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit
of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of
bones. He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the
valley, and they were very dry. He said to me, “Mortal, can these bones
live?” I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” Then he said to me,
“Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of
the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to
enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause
flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you,
and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.” So I
prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly
there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its
bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon
them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then
he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the
breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath,
and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” I prophesied as he
commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and
stood on their feet, a vast multitude. Then he said to me, “Mortal, these
bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up,
and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.’ Therefore prophesy, and
say to them, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves,
and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you
back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I
open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I
will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on
your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will
act,” says the Lord.
Reader The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God. Remain seated.

Psalm 104:25-35,37
25 O LORD, how manifold are your works! *
in wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
26 Yonder is the great and wide sea
with its living things too many to number, *
creatures both small and great.
27 There move the ships,
and there is that Leviathan, *
which you have made for the sport of it.
28 All of them look to you *
to give them their food in due season.
29 You give it to them; they gather it; *
you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.
30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; *
you take away their breath,
and they die and return to their dust.
31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; *
and so you renew the face of the earth.
32 May the glory of the LORD endure for ever; *
may the LORD rejoice in all his works.
33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; *
he touches the mountains and they smoke.
34 I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; *
I will praise my God while I have my being.
35 May these words of mine please him; *
I will rejoice in the LORD.
37 Bless the LORD, O my soul. *
Hallelujah!

Second Reading Acts 2:1-21
A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent
wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided
tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of
them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in
other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout
Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this
sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard
them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished,
they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it
that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes,
Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus
and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya
belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about
God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one
another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are
filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his
voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem,
let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not
drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this
is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be,
God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons
and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see
visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves,
both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they
shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs
on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be
turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the
Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of
the Lord shall be saved.’”
The first four verses are now read in foreign languages. At the
conclusion the lector says
Reader The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel John 15:26-27;16:4b-15
All stand.
Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John.
People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Jesus said to his disciples, “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send
to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he
will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been
with me from the beginning. I did not say these things to you from the
beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent
me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have
said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell
you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go
away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to
you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and
righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in
me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will
see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has
been condemned. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot
bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all
16
the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he
hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will
glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All
that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is
mine and declare it to you.”

Thanksgiving Over the Water
The Celebrant then says
The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant
We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy
Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the
children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise.
In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by
the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death
and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.
We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with
Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are
reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we
bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them
in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water
Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit,
that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue
for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.
To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and
for ever. Amen.
Baptism
Each candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, or to an assisting priest or
deacon, who then immerses, or pours water upon, the candidate, saying
Connor Howard, Harper Rae, and Grant Michael, I baptize you in the
Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
When this action has been completed for all the candidates, the Bishop or Priest, at a
place in full sight of the congregation, prays over them, saying
22
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you
have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have
raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy
Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will
and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and
wonder in all your works. Amen.
Then the Bishop or Priest places a hand on the person’s head, marking on the forehead
the sign of the cross [using Chrism if desired] and saying to each one
Connor Howard, Harper Rae, and Grant Michael, you are sealed by the
Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen.
After the Baptism, the Clergy, baptizands, parents and sponsors process to the front of
the church as the organs plays.
The Celebrant then says
Let us welcome the newly baptized.
Celebrant and People
We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ
crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal
priesthood.
Peace
All stand.
Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People And also with you. Then the Ministers and the People may greet one another in the name of the Lord.
23
Holy Communion
The Celebrant says
Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; bring offerings and come
into his courts. Psalm 96:8
Offertory Anthem: O Breath of Life - Trad. English, arr. Alan Bullard
Representatives of the congregation bring the people’s offerings of bread and wine, and
money or other gifts, to the deacon or celebrant. The people stand while the offerings are
presented and placed on the Altar.
Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow / praise him, all creatures here
below / praise him above, ye heavenly host / praise Father, Son, and
Holy Ghost. Amen.
Great Thanksgiving
The people remain standing.
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Lift up your hearts.
People We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give him thanks and praise. The Celebrant proceeds
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give
thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
Because in Jesus Christ our Lord you have received us as your sons and
daughters, made us citizens of your kingdom, and given us the Holy
Spirit to guide us into all truth.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels
and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to
proclaim the glory of your Name:
24
The people stand or kneel.
The Celebrant continues
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself;
and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death,
you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share
our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the
God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and
offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the
whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus
Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and
gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is
given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he
gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the
new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of
sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice
of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and
ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to
be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and
drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may
faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy,
and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of
your eternal kingdom.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him,
and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours,
Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
The Celebrant then continues
And now, as our Savior
Christ has taught us,
we are bold to say, People and Celebrant
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread
A period of silence is kept.
Alleluia. Christ our passover is sacrificed for us
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
The Celebrant says
The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that
Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with
thanksgiving.
All baptized persons, whatever your denominational affiliation, are welcome to receive
Holy Communion at our altar. You may stand at the altar rail if your knees do not permit
kneeling. Please assist the chalice bearer by gently holding the base of the chalice.
Please do not hold the top of the chalice. If you wish, you may intinct (dip) the host
(consecrated bread) in the chalice. If you do not wish to receive the wine, fold your arms
over your chest. Baptized children may receive with parent's permission, otherwise they
will receive a blessing.

After Communion, the Celebrant says
Let us pray.
Celebrant and People
Almighty and everliving God,
we thank you for feeding us
with the spiritual food
of the most precious Body and Blood
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ;
and for assuring us in these holy mysteries
that we are living members of the Body of your Son,
and heirs of your eternal kingdom.
And now, Father, send us out
to do the work you have given us to do,
to love and serve you
as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.
To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
