In concert with Interfaith Hospitality Network, the Outreach

committee of Christ Church is exploring the possibility of starting

homeless ministry again at Christ Church. This ministry has been

endorsed by our Vestry, assuming we have enough volunteers. We

need to know if you would be willing to help cook meals and/or

spend the night with the families who would be our guests for one

week. Please sign up at the back of church. If we have enough

volunteers we will begin this important ministry again.

Thank you to all who helped sell our pumpkins! Our 2016 Pumpkin

Patch was a great success, thanks to all our wonderful volunteers.

We grossed $14,474 in pumpkin sales and donations! Of that amount

(less the donations received) the church will net 33.3%. A very

special thank you to our chairman, Dave Smith.

Mary Lou Patton is retiring at the end of this year. Those who would

like to contribute toward a purse for her are invited to use an

envelope which may be found at the back of church. Please make

checks out to “Christ Church” earmarked “Patton purse”. Thank

you! (Don’t forget to come to her retirement party after the 10 AM

service on December 11th

.)

The Flower Guild is seeking old or new LEATHER-bound Bibles or

Books of Common Prayer as part of the Christmas décor for the

church windows. We prefer larger ones, but can adapt to smaller

sizes. In order to have sufficient time to preplan the arrangement of

each window, we need the books no later than November 20. All

books will be safely locked in the church prior to decorating the

church in December. See or call Ruth Pottier (610-361-8180),

Marlene Nickerson, Floss Rhine, Elizabeth Rasnake or Rev. Judy.

Thank you!

Ditty Bags – We will be stuffing the Ditty Bags for Seaman’s

Institute in Musselman hall after the 10 AM service today,

November 20. You are invited to help!

A Note on Today’s Readings

Proper 29: The Reign of Christ or Christ the King—Year C

Today is the final Sunday of the church year. It is the celebration of the

reign of Christ over all creation. The gospel reading presents Christ’s

kingship in its most dramatic moment, when he rules over the earth from

his cross. At this moment when he seemed the most despised and

rejected of people, he forgives the penitent thief crucified with him and

promises that he would be with him in paradise. This is the central

paradox of the Christian proclamation. Our eternal ruler revealed his

power by putting power aside and dying to save the world he created.

The first reading from Jeremiah brings God’s condemnation on the rulers

of Judah who are evil shepherds. God will come in person to gather all

the lost sheep who had been betrayed by those unworthy shepherds. God

will be the shepherd of the people and will raise up a righteous king from

the family of David to care for the people. For the first Christians, this

reading was taken to refer to Jesus.

In the letter to the Colossians, the writer uses what is though to have

been an early Christian hymn to express his most exalted statement of the

cosmic meaning of the Christ. Jesus Christ is the fullness of God, the

source and origin of all that is, and the saving ruler of the universe who

seals his rule with the blood of his cross.

In the Eucharist, we bring all the world into the risen presence of its

Lord, that the world through him might be saved. Here we acclaim the

ruler and sovereign of all things who is also our savior, our brother, and

our lover.

Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in

your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully

First Reading Jeremiah 23:1-6

All sit.

A Reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah.

Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!

says the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,

concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have

scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not

attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the

Lord. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the

lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold,

and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over

them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be

dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord. The days are surely

coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous

Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute

justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and

Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called:

“The Lord is our righteousness.”

As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, *

which have been since the world began:

That we should be saved from our enemies, *

To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham, *

that he would give us,

That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies *

might serve him without fear,

In holiness and righteousness before him, *

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest, *

A Reading from Paul’s letter to the Church in Colossus.

May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his

glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with

patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you

to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us

from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his

beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is

the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all

things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible,

whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been

created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to

Luke.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus

there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus

said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”

And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by,

watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let

him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!” The

soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and

saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also

an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the

criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you

not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him,

saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of

condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are

getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing

wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your

kingdom.” He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in

Paradise.”

The Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you

have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your

people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the

Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to

of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples,

for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for

the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O

Father,

Celebrant and People

We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection,

We await his coming in glory; The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of

all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts

that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of

the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be

acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the

fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring

us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the

everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our

Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author

of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all

honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

The Celebrant then continues

And now, as our Savior

Christ has taught us,

we are bold to say, People and Celebrant

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

A period of silence is kept.

The Celebrant says

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that

Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with

thanksgiving.

All baptized persons, whatever your denominational affiliation, are welcome to receive

Holy Communion at our altar. You may stand at the altar rail if your knees do not permit

kneeling. Please assist the chalice bearer by gently holding the base of the chalice.

Please do not hold the top of the chalice. If you wish, you may intinct (dip) the host

(consecrated bread) in the chalice. If you do not wish to receive the wine, fold your arms

over your chest. Baptized children may receive with parent's permission, otherwise they

will receive a blessing.

After Communion, the Celebrant says

Let us pray.

Celebrant and People

Eternal God, heavenly Father,

you have graciously accepted us as living members

of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,

and you have fed us with spiritual food

in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.

Send us now into the world in peace,

and grant us strength and courage

to love and serve you

with gladness and singleness of heart;

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessing

The priest blesses the people, saying

The Wisdom, the Love, and the Grace of God strengthen you to be

Christ's hands and heart in this world, and the blessing of God, Father,

Son, and Holy Spirit be with you now and evermore.
