• Generation Ready is a national organization and to

achieve consistency there is a need for a common

message

• This material provides a sample of curriculum and

assessment that will help lead to consistency

Underlying Philosophy

• Use of Backwards Planning

• Teachers focusing on how students learn mathematics, as

well as what mathematics they learn

• Mathematics learning being a combination of investigative

experiences, consolidation and application

• The key purpose of assessment is to inform instruction

• Assessment involves evaluating students’ conceptual

understanding, skills, and thinking


Student’s Role

• The need for an uncompromising focus on the valued

curriculum

• Students having opportunities to construct deep

understandings of mathematical concepts

• Opportunities being provided where students are required to

recall and apply prior knowledge and skill

• Learning experiences that are purposeful, both challenging

students and requiring them to take risks.


An Effective Teacher

• Knows how their students learn

• Knows what their students need to learn

• Knows what their students know

• Creates challenge

• Encourages risk taking, and

• Creates purposeful learning experiences


Considerations in using the Math Component of

the Learn Library

• It currently provides only a sample of two domains

at each grade level

• It is only one example of what is possible at a

particular point in time

Learning Target


A Learning Target is a short term developmental goal (benchmark) that encapsulates what students know

and can do after a series of lessons.

• Focuses on grade level CCLS

• Incorporates pre-requisite knowledge and skills

• Emphasizes application of the mathematics

Provides benchmarks through the unit

Provides direction in the design of lessons in the cycle

Facilitates transparency between teacher and student

Provides the opportunity to administer a regular performance assessment

Elements of a Learning Cycle


• Exploratory lessons that provide students with the opportunities to collaboratively bring their intuition, prior knowledge and skill to a problem aligned to the new learning target (and hence provide the teacher with starting points for their instruction)

• Conceptual lessons that build understanding of concepts associated with the Learning Target

• Consolidation lessons that provide opportunities to practice and apply concepts and skills associated with the Learning Target

• Review lessons that prepare students for a performance task assessment through collaborative work with peers

• A Performance Task the evaluates a student’s mastery of the Learning Target
