For one night only, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS will present one of the American theatre’s most beloved theatrical icons and greatest triple-threat talents, Chita Rivera, in a star-studded performance in honor of her 80th birthday.
Chita: A Legendary Celebration, directed by Graciela Daniele and written by Terrence McNally, will take place Monday, October 7, 2013, at the August Wilson Theatre with a VIP gala reception at Blue Fin, one of Broadway’s premier restaurants.
Ms. Rivera made her Broadway debut in the spring of 1954 in Can-Can, which launched one of the most celebrated and long-lasting Broadway careers, performing in 15 additional shows on the Great White Way.
A few years later, Ms. Rivera grabbed the spotlight and put an indelible stamp on the role of the firebrand Anita in the ground-breaking original production of West Side Story, and went on to create iconic musical theatre roles including Rose in Bye Bye Birdie and Velma in Chicago. She was nominated for nine Tony Awards, winning for her unforgettable performances in The Rink and Kiss of the Spider Woman.
Performing on Broadway, in the West End and all around the world, Ms. Rivera worked with many of the greatest musical theatre collaborators, including Leonard Bernstein, Lynn Ahrens, Gower Champion, Cy Coleman, Jerry Bock, Graciela Daniele, Fred Ebb, Dorothy Fields, Stephen Flaherty, Bob Fosse, Sheldon Harnick, Jerry Herman, John Kander, Rob Marshall, Terrence McNally, Hal Prince, Jerome Robbins, Stephen Sondheim, Charles Strouse and many more.
Ms. Rivera received the coveted Kennedy Center Honor in Washington, DC in 2002, making her the first Hispanic ever to be chosen to receive this award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. This season, she won rave reviews as Princess Puffer in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s celebrated Broadway revival The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

A few years ago, a few of my close friends suggested we celebrate my upcoming milestone birthday with, among other things, a special concert on Broadway. I immediately said a resounding YES! How exciting this would be. However, I had two stipulations: First, that I must perform in it (I’m not one to just watch and I’d never be able to sit still!) and second, that it be a benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, an organization near and dear to my heart. The concert will take place Monday evening, October 7, 2013, at the August Wilson Theatre. Directed and written by my dear friends Graciela Daniele and Terrence McNally, I’ll perform with a full orchestra and be joined by some spectacular guest stars.
My life has been an amazing collection of moments. Moments shared with some of the most gifted actors, composers, producers, directors and musicians in the theatre. I look forward with great anticipation to continue on this joyous ride, which promises to be filled with more moments, both unforgettable and amazing. Please join me for this joyous evening, which will also celebrate the hard work and passion of everyone at Broadway Cares and the extraordinary difference they make every day in the lives of so many across the country. They are the lifeline of the theatre community and beyond.
2013 is going to be a wonderful year! Love,
