TheChildrensResponseisbasedonJamesJ.AshersTotalPhysicalResponsemethod.TPRtakesintoaccountthatpeoplelearnbestwhentheyareactivelyinvolvedandunderstandthelanguagetheyhear.Thisisespeciallytrueofchildrenwhodevelopmentallyhaveshorterattentionspansandneedtowiggle.
Eachofthelessonsincludedinthetextprovidespracticewithspe-cificgrammaticalpatternsthataretroublesomeforyoungEFLlearners.ThesestructuresareintroducedthroughTPRactivitiestogiveyounglearnersameasureofcontroloverbothformandfunction.Afterthestu-dentsarecomfortablewithalesson,teacherscanworkonthetargetstructurethroughgamesanddrills.ItalsohelpstosetoutthepropsthatareusedintheTPRlessonsinaplacewherechildrencanworkwiththemindependently:thisencouragespeerteaching.
ThegrammaticalpointsfoundinTheChildrensResponsearethesamegrammaticalpointspresentedinmanyEnglishasaSecond/ForeignLanguageprogramsforchildren.Eachgrammaticalconceptispresentedtwice.Eitherorbothofthelessonsmaybeused,butitisbesttouseonlyonelessonduringaclasssession.Thefirstofthesepairedpresen-tationsrequiresnopreparationandthesimplestofmaterials:paper,pen-cil,chalk,orcrayons.Thesecondwillrequireslightlymorepreparation,andinsomeinstancesyoumayneedtobringitemsfromhome.Alimit-ednumberofvocabularyitemsandamaximumofoneidiomareintro-ducedineachlesson.
HowyouuseTheChildrensResponsewilldependonanumberoffactors,includingthestudentsage,levelofEnglishbackground,andwillingnesstoparticipateinagroupsetting.Whenchildrenareshyaboutspeaking,theymaybecomelessinhibitedabouttalkingafterpan-tomimingorcarryingouttheactionsequences.

Childrenwillrespondbeautifullytotheactivitiesinthistextifnotpushedtoohard.WithaclassofchildrenofKindergartenagetoGradeThree,youcanusethefirstfivestepsofeachlesson.Witholderchil-dren,youmayusetheentirelesson.
Thefirstfewtimes,followtheprocedures,andthenbecreative.Youmaywishtousecostumesorhavethechildrenwriteastoryordrawpic-turestoserveaspromptingcues.
ThoughTotalPhysicalResponsewasoriginallyintendedtobeusedasanapproachtoteachoralEnglish,itcanalsobeusedeffectivelytointroducechildrentothewrittenlanguage.Childrenlearnreadingandwritingskillsbestwhentheyaretaughtinapurposefulandmeaningfulcontext.Researchhasfoundthatchildrenlearnliteracyskillsmoreeasi-lywhentheyareintegratedorcombinedwithoralskills.
TheTPRlessonsinthisbookmaybeusedasthebasisforlanguageexperiencestories.Alanguageexperiencestoryisagroup-authoredstorywrittenaboutasharedexperience.Childrenparticipateinanexpe-rience,andthenretellordictatethestorytoyou,theirteacher.Childrenwatchasyouprintthestory.Childrenadorereadingandre-readingwhattheyhaveauthored.Whenyouwritedownwordsforthemtoread,itisagoodideatoprintusinguppercase(CAPITAL)andlowercaseletters,becauseitiseasierforchildrentomakeoutthewordsinprintedlettersthanincursivewriting;andprintedlettersarewhattheyseewhentheyworkwithbooks.
