    Guide to Swim Lessons

This program utilizes the Red Cross curriculum. In the Parent and Child classes, children must be a minimum of 6 months, and can take the class up to age 3. For Preschool and Learn to Swim Levels, children must be a minimum of 3 years old & be able to follow directions and participate SAFELY as one of a minimum number of four students, for thirty minutes, WITHOUT parent or guardian present. Only by successful mastery & consistent demonstration of all the skills required under each level can a participant move to the next swim level in the Swim Lessons University program. Children must be the proper age before any session begins.

We reserve the right to remove any child from the program whose behavior compromises safety, including verbal as well as physical behavior. Children may need to be moved to a different level according to their skills demonstrated the 1st day of class. If space is not available, your check will be returned or we can shred it the following business day.

    1) The aquatic staff holds American Red Cross certifications in Standard First Aid & CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. The guard staff holds an additional certification in Lifeguarding. All swim lesson instructors are certified Red Cross Water Safety instructors.

    2) The safety of your children is our 1st priority & is best maintained if parents view the 1st & last class of any session. During subsequent lessons, the pool area & gallery will be cleared of spectators. Please note that the last class of a session may occur on a make-up date.

Research has indicated that: a. Children can be distracted by their parents presence during lessons. b. One of the instructional goals is to provide your child with a fun & positive learning

opportunity with their peers while developing separation skills. c. Increased noise level in the pool from the gallery can inhibit the lifeguards & instructors

from hearing a swimmer in need of assistance. d. Parents can unintentionally distract lifeguards when they call them over to the gallery to ask

a question or allow other young children to run & play in the gallery area.

    3) Address any questions to your childs instructor after class. If the instructor is unavailable, leave a written message along with your phone number. For additional information contact the Aquatic Director.

    4) Swimming skills are acquired & taught differently. Children progress at their own pace. Encourage your child & avoid comparisons to classmates. Keep the learning process fun. Additional practice time with new skills in the water will help to progress through the levels more quickly.

    5) To facilitate instructor preparation for any special needs such as hearing, speech, developmental or sight deficits, seizures, etc. Please indicate on the registration form.

    6) Please do not ask to have your child placed with a certain instructor or another child. Children may be moved according to skills demonstrated during the first class of the session.

    7) Infants or untrained children are required by state health code to be wearing tight fitting vinyl pants.

    8) Classes may need to be cancelled or combined according to enrollment. If a class is canceled due to lack of enrollment, registrants will be notified by phone & check shredded

    Swim Level Placement Guide

The following guide has been prepared from the American Red Cross Swimming & Water Safety

Aquatic Programs to assist parents in placing their children in the proper swim level for the childs swimming ability within the Learn-to-Swim Levels, Preschool Aquatics Program or the Parent &

    Child Aquatics Program.

As a reminder, if your child has not been swimming for an extended period of time, place them in the

level they had last participated in, whether or not they were passed to the next level. Swimming,

like any skilled discipline, requires some skill review before additional progress can be made by the

    participant.

PARENT & CHILD AQUATICS (PC1) Grouped by age 6 months through 3 years old

Purpose - Familiarize children between the ages of 6 months and approximately 3 years with the

water and teach swimming readiness skills. Provide safety information for parents and teach

techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water.

Prerequisites - no skills prerequisites; child must be at least 6 months old to enroll. Parent or other

caregiver must accompany each child into the water & participate in each class.

PARENT & CHILD AQUATICS (PC2) Grouped by age 6 months through 3 years old

Purpose - Improve skills learned in Parent and Child Aquatics Level 1 and teach more advanced

skills. Continue to build on water safety knowledge.

Prerequisites - Comfort level with skills taught in Parent and Child Aquatics Level 1; child must be

at least 6 months old to enroll. Parent or other caregiver must accompany each child into the

water & participate in each class.

    PRESCHOOL AQUATICS 1 (PA1)

Grouped by age 3 (if mature enough to listen and follow safety rules), 4 & 5 years old Purpose - Familiarize children approximately 4 and 5 years old to the aquatic environment and help

them acquire rudimentary basic aquatic skills. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes

and safe practices in and around water.

Prerequisites - no skills prerequisites for Preschool Aquatics 1.

    PRESCHOOL AQUATICS 2 (PA2)

Grouped by age 3 (if mature enough to listen and follow safety rules), 4 & 5 years old Purpose Build on and improve skills learned in Preschool Aquatics Level 1. Increase knowledge of water safety topics introduced in Preschool Aquatics Level 1.

Prerequisites Successful demonstration of the Preschool Aquatics Level 1 exit skills assessment.

    PRESCHOOL AQUATICS 3 (PA3)

Grouped by age 3 (if mature enough to listen and follow safety rules), 4 & 5 years old Purpose Increase proficiency and build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Preschool Aquatics Levels 1 and 2. Reinforce water safety concepts and skills introduced in earlier levels and introduce

    additional water safety topics

Prerequisites Successful demonstration of the Preschool Aquatics Level 2 exit skills assessment.

  • Summer Session

Summer Sessions consist of 8 classes, which run Monday through Thursday for 2 weeks. In the case of a cancellation due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, make ups will take place on the Friday of the week of said cancellation. Children tend to improve at a faster rate when they are allowed to practice. The more that they are able to practice outside of swim lessons, the faster they will improve. Consider bringing your children to our All Ages swim or to another pool to practice the skills that they have been working on.

    Parents:

Remember that the summer is the time that your children are most at risk to have an accident in or near the water. It is possible to drown in as little as an inch of water. Make sure that all areas such as pools, streams, lakes, ponds, and any other standing water is blocked from access by children unless an adult is nearby to supervise. Never leave children unattended in backyard pools, rivers, streams, or other bodies of water unless they are with a swim instructor or other adult.
