After getting wind of Poplar Creek Coun-try Club becoming The Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club, I had to check it out.

I’m very glad I did.Bridges of Poplar Creek is testament to

modern day magic, the reinvention of an already stout, 35-year-old golf course and clubhouse thanks to a multi-million dollar

enhancement project. Floods that occasion-ally plagued fairways after heavy rains will no longer occur.

The addition of “Bridges” to the club moniker is fi tting. Installation of eight wood bridges of a notable 1,000-plus linear feet give “pop” to golfers’ aesthetics-laden journey and a golf history lesson along the way.

Plaques of Bobby Jones, Chick Evans, Sam-uel Ryder and Babe Zaharias are planned to reside alongside bridges with capsules about their signifi cant contributions to the game. This lends great vibe to the golf experience at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club.

“As a municipal facility, we want to show how these grit-and-grind legends persevered

and laid the groundwork for generations of golfers to enjoy,” says Brian Bechtold, direc-tor of golf at Bridges of Poplar Creek Coun-try Club which is, owned and operated by the Hoffman Estates Park District. “It aligns with our family approach for golf and social activities, in addition to the age-old ‘buddy round.”

Golf Course Renovation My recent tour of the property con-

fi rmed that its impressiveness only begins with the bridge theme. Fifteen holes underwent major renovation, and No. 1 is now No. 10 (and vice versa) to improve playing experiences. Holes that were un-touched were remarkable in the fi rst place.

The addition of multiple tee boxes gives Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club renewed appeal to better golfers seek-ing added length and to novice golfers seeking shorter distances. Work on some greens as well as re-confi gured fairways and bunkers add to enjoyable, fi rst-class experiences. Fescue is omnipresent on many holes providing depth and defi ni-tion, and new lakes make for even more challenging but fair land-water hazards.

Bottom line: Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club is the epitome of hole-by-hole excitement. Another way to state it is that there’s nary a boring moment. Credit goes to Lohmann Golf Design for preserv-ing the classic Killian-Nugent layout while enhancing strategic shot values that perfectly blend bark and benevolence to satisfy golfers of all abilities. The course is open and renovations will be complete by June 2011.

Among a bevy of highlight holes:No. 2 – This short, 342-yard par 4 tests

your skill from the get-go. With water on the right and out of bounds on the left, an accurate tee shot is essential. For risk takers going for the green, let loose your inner John Daly loose with a long drive over wa-ter. Once (or if) you safely hit this fairway, your next shot requires pinpoint accuracy over a creek to the green. Then you cross the long, winding and picturesque bridge to a green that slopes from back to front and toward the water.

No. 6 – Tee it high and let it fl y down the wide fairway for a birdie opportunity on this 361-yard, par 4. However, if you miss left, a watery grave looms. Your second shot requires well-judged distance to carry water and two greenside bunkers. If you get the ball to the hole, a birdie on this fl at putting surface is realistic.

No. 17 – The longest par 3 at 215 yards from the championship tees is a unani-mous winner. A picturesque but frighten-ing downhill tee shot leads to an L-shaped green almost completely surrounded by water. Playing for the pin is bold but carries reward potential on this multi-tiered green. A wise choice is to aim for the center of the green and run away with a solid par.

More Than a Round of Golf

Practice rats will relish a new 9,100-square-foot putting green with six holes cut daily and a 3,500-square-foot bentgrass chipping area for a state-of-the-art learning center totaling 8,700 square feet. PGA-certifi ed in-struction on a 55-station driving range, plus the addition of a “Flight-Scope launch monitor” for perfect club fi tting, has golfers, at least for a fl eeting moment, shouting “PGA Tour, here we come.”

To say Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club caters to all desires is an under-statement. For golfers who prefer routines, Poplar Creek’s permanent tee time program hits the spot. League, tournament and out-ing coordinators rely on the club and its dedicated staff for detail-laden attention to producing successful events. Junior golfers rave about the Saturday and Sunday twi-light development programs. Seniors also benefi t from special rates on weekdays.

For non-golfers, 19th Hole afi cionados and special-events planners, the clubhouse received a major facelift. A modern-era ambiance in the main banquet room owes thanks to new carpet, wallpaper, light-ing, paint, ceiling construction, bathroom upgrades and a new dance fl oor. Business meetings are fi rst-class with WiFi, screens, LCD projectors and other accoutrements.

Adding to the excitement is a new, 8,200-square-foot event area complete with

a gazebo and waterfall for memorable weddings and other special occasions.Convenience

Like they say about new movie releases: “Run, Don’t Walk” to see them. That adage applies to new Bridges at Poplar Creek Country Club. It is located between Golf and Higgins Roads, east of Barrington Road, just off of Moon Lake Boulevard, in the northwest Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates.

My hat’s off to the Hoffman Estates Park District for pulling out all stops to enhance Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club. Chicago-area golfers are poised to line up for tee times – time and again. They’re visiting www.bridgesofpoplarcreek.com for more information or calling (847) 781-3681 for tee times.

The rebranded Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club is teeming with improvements and will open anew this spring after a comprehensive project to modernize the

layout and manipulate the namesake water feature that mean-ders throughout the course. Improvements in aesthetics and playability have been achieved thanks to the handiwork of Lohmann Golf Design and the guidance of the Hoffman Estates Park District. Eight attrac-tive timber bridges replace steel bridges and allow various creek crossings. The bridges will be adorned with plaques that pay tribute to legends of the game like Bobby Jones, Chick Evans, Samuel Ryder and Babe Zaharis. Overall 15 holes were modifi ed in some fashion and the nines were fl ipped, as No. 1 is now No. 10. Fescue grasses were added to provide depth and defi nition and more tee boxes were installed to lengthen and shorten the 35-year-old course. Water hazards are bigger and more visible, creating some interesting risk-reward shots that didn’t exist before.

Get to the course early to take advantage of the 9,100-square-foot putting green, Bent grass chipping area and 55-station driving range. The facility is also outfi tted with a state-of-the-art golf academy.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., Prairie Landing Golf Club is one of Chicago’s best golf experiences and is rated 4 1/2 Stars by Golf Digest Best Places

to Play. The award-winning layout is one of only 25 Illinois courses to receive this distinction. The stunning links-style course features pastoral hills, rolling bentgrass fairways, strategically positioned bunkers and large, fast, undulating greens. The Irish-Scottish ele-ments like swales, hollows and dunes give Prairie Landing a very unique feel. Choose from fi ve sets of tees and appreciate the vistas that are unspoiled by homes or development. Affordable green fee opportunities are available, which include time on the fi nest practice center in Chicago. The natural grass driving range, two practice holes and full-col-or GPS on every golf car complete a memorable experience. Our historic clubhouse, picturesque banquet facility and Prairie Landing’s Golf Academy instruction comple-ment the premium conditions of the course. Memberships and permanent tee times are available. Spend the day at Prairie Landing.

Private club life has always been an appealing prospect to avid golfers. The sheer number of golf facilities

in America has made the country club life-style available to the masses, not just the executives of Fortune 500 companies.

Suddenly everyone could dream of immaculately manicured edges, door-to-door service and friendly clubhouse confi nes. But recent trends and a changing family dynamic have made belonging to a country club more problematic.

For many, a weak economy has halted thoughts of exclusive membership at pri-vate clubs, but alternatives able to deliver the same atmosphere and quality without

the commitment exist. Klein Creek Golf Club is one of those alternatives, and as a member of the Royal Country Clubs (The Royal Fox, The Royal Hawk), the semi-private club in Winfi eld is well versed in delivering an upscale golf product.

Identifi ed by Chicagoland Golf and Golf Digest as one of the area’s premier public-access clubs, Klein Creek is a Dick Nugent design that’s beautiful and chal-lenging; a true mix of style and substance.

The course itself is very distinctive. Measuring 6,700 yards from the champi-onship tees, this Nugent design ribbons through a rich landscape interspersed with rolling terrain, shapely and strategically-

located bunkers, moguls and mounding and native grasses. The most ubiquitous element of Klein Creek is water, and it’s practically everywhere. Only three holes are without at least some semblance of a water hazard.

Overall, the turf is plush and well-manicured throughout, adding to that private club feel. The greens themselves are the subject of many positive reviews. Klein Creek takes great pride in making sure their bentgrass putting services are rolling true and in great shape.

“This course is a gem,” commented a local golfer who recently teed it up at Klein Creek. “The scenery is fantastic on this special piece of land. Every hole is interest-ing and a challenge. You could play this course many times before getting bored. It has to be one of Nugent’s best designs.”

Each hole at Klein Creek is designed to be memorable on its own, and four sets of tees give all ability levels a chance to succeed and smile.

The most talked about holes at Klein Creek are the 9th and 18th, a pair of rigorous par 4s that round out each side. The 453-yard 9th was rated as the toughest 9th hole in Chicagoland, and the 417-yard par-4 18th isn’t much easier.

In order to ascend to the level of a private club, an outstanding on-course presentation must seamlessly blend with attentive service. Klein Creek eagerly affords the golfer both.

An attendant is available at all times to greet them at the bag drop, an open-air pavilion receives guests at the turn and golfers are whisked away to Klein Creek’s

restaurant and bar upon completion of their round should they choose. Every aspect of the day is done right. A recently instituted forecaddie program enhances the guest experience at Klein Creek. This program proves especial-ly benefi cial to vacationers and fi rst-time guests as your round is guided by a trained forecaddie with broad knowledge of the course’s nooks and crannies.

Klein Creek has the facilities and kno-whow to host large gatherings and family functions. There are multiple banquet and meeting spaces, including the Creekside Restaurant.

Members of The Royal Fox and The Royal Hawk enjoy reciprocal benefi ts at Klein Creek, and members at Klein Creek enjoy dining privileges at The Royal Fox and The Royal Hawk. The Royal 54 also

offers playing privileges to member guests. For more information on joining the Royal Country Clubs, please visit www.golfatroyal.com or call (630) 584-4000 ext. 235.

K lein Creek Golf Club is an 18-hole “must play” golf course conveniently located in suburban DuPage County, just south of Route 64 and

east of County Farm Road. Klein Creek features contrasting gentle doglegs bounded by forest with strategically-bunkered fairways and greens, wild prairie grasses and more than 30 acres of man-made lakes.

Klein Creek has been repeatedly recognized as one of the area’s best-maintained courses and Golf Digest’s Places to Play has awarded the course its 4-Star rating. The par-4 ninth hole has been rated as the most chal-lenging No. 9 in Chicagoland.

Klein Creek is the perfect setting for your next outing, fundraiser, wedding or other social occasion with a banquet facility that seats 250 comfortably. PGA professionals staff an award-winning pro shop and are available for lessons. Seasonal memberships and permanent tee times are also available.

into one of the top municipal golf courses in the country and one of the best places in all of Chicagoland to golf, dine, entertain and host large events and parties. The Arthur Hills design can play from just under 5,000 yards to more than 7,100 with fi ve sets of tees. The links-style layout features seven lakes that come into play on 14 of the 18 holes including the picturesque island-greened 15th, an over-the-water carry of 67 to 156 yards. Three of the four par 5s play into the prevailing wind and the fourth measures up to 600 yards from the tips. The Bolingbrook Golf Academy includes a dozen tar-get greens, a huge short-game area with multiple chipping greens and bunkers, an enormous putting green and even two complete practice holes, all lighted for nighttime use. Formal and informal dining and events of all sizes are possible in the 76,000-square-foot clubhouse.

After 108 storied years as a private club, Ravisloe went public in 2009 to enthusiastic reviews and critical acclaim. The venerable facility qualifi es as a

must-play not only in the south suburbs, but throughout Chicagoland. Boasting a Donald Ross pedigree (from a 1917-19 renovation) and a recent David Esler restoration (2002), splendid Ravisloe is a classic, parkland-style layout. The course features tree-lined fairways, greens that invite run-up shots, fairway bunkers that narrow the course consid-erably, moguls and mounds, fescue grasses, cross bunkers, pot bunkers and fall-away slopes surrounding the green complexes to magnify mistakes. Exceptional conditioning and a substantial investment in restoring and enhancing its clubhouse and grounds secure Ravisloe’s rank among the elite of Chicagoland’s upscale public facilities. Ravisloe’s Special Events program shares the limelight here as the club’s spectacular setting and attentive staff make Ravisloe perfect for hosting all manner of events, from weddings and parties to golf outings and tourna-ments.

Renowned golf course architect Arthur Hills brings his award-winning design talent to Illinois for the fi rst time with the classic layout

of Stonewall Orchard Golf Club. Hailed as the world’s No. 2 designer by GolfWorld

Magazine in 1998, Hills allowed the natural rolling landscape to dictate this magnifi cent 18-hole Lake County design. From the more than 65,000 fully mature pine and oak trees to the acres and acres of rolling hills, tranquil wetlands and wildlife, Stonewall Orchard has those unique, natural qualities often as-sociated with golf in the Carolinas.

Offering the public a country club environment in a relaxed atmosphere, Stonewall Orchard is one golf course you’ll want to play time and time again. We welcome you to enjoy this memorable experience.

Pure golf, in a magnifi cent natural landscape unsullied by development. That’s what you’ll experience at Oak Grove Golf Course in McHenry County.

Oak Grove is among an elite handful of Illinois golf courses ranked 4-1/2 stars by Golf Digest. This championship 18 nestled in gorgeous, rural countryside features some of the fi nest public greens in Chicagoland and private-club condi-tioning. Vibrant wetlands, mature oak savannas and generous fairways all contribute to Oak Grove’s unique ambiance. Best of all, Oak Grove’s exceptional golf experience is accessible and affordable. “Our customers rave and are astounded we’re not packed, but we’re off the beaten path,” notes GM Tim Miles, Jr. With fi ve tee placements per hole, the course is enjoyable for all levels, yet the CDGA ranks it among its toughest pub-lic tracks. Built on a 170-acre tract of rolling farmland in west-ern Kane County, Hughes Creek Golf Club is an Illinois golf destination that gets better each year.

A truly peaceful setting with a sympathetic relationship with nature, Hughes Creek contains gentle rolling hills, wetlands, native plants, fl owers and beautiful song birds. The panoramic view of the course from the clubhouse is unforgettable.

But don’t be hypnotized by the beauty of the layout. Designed by Gordon Cunningham, Hughes Creek forces a player to utilize every club in the bag to navigate its rolling topography. The course also requires accurate iron play into its greens, and once you’re reached the putting surface, you’ll need to putt with precision to score well.

Secluded and a long way from city streets, it’s just you, a few Redwing Blackbirds, American Goldfi nches and the golf course at Hughes Creek.

Be sure to visit the 19th hole to sample the area’s best home-cooked hot dogs or stop in the restaurant and enjoy a wonderful lunch or dinner. For more information on Hughes Creek, visit www.hughescreek.com.

In 1990 Gary Pinns battled the blustery winds and snarling fescue at the Golf Club of Illinois to win the last of his

fi ve Illinois Open championships. A testa-ment to the severity of the 7,041-yard par-71 course, Pinns, who is now one of America’s top teaching professionals, was the only man in the fi eld to defeat par.

The public links-style layout was softened in the decade after the ’90 Illi-nois Open, as hazards were removed from fairways and native grasses were trimmed to manageable heights. There are fi ve tee positions in place at the course, saving be-ginners and high handicaps from having to tackle the course at full strength.

General Manager Rob Lemke said the course is especially popular with senior players – proof that while Golf Club of Il-linois can be a brute at times, its eminent-ly playable for all ages and skill levels.

Golf Club of Illinois was composed by popular Chicagoland architect Dick Nugent, and then partner Bruce Bor-land. Borland went on to build signature

courses for Jack Nicklaus Design from his hometown of Peoria to Indonesia, but met a very untimely and tragic end aboard the Learjet he shared with Payne Stewart and four others bound for The Tour Champi-onship in Dallas in 1999.

Although the design has been slightly altered since it debuted in 1987, its distinguishing characteristics still remain. Generous fairways, fescue rough, which tickles your knee caps in some spots, dev-ilish sand bunkers and gentle mounding will be experienced from start to fi nish.

One thing you won’t fi nd at Golf Club Illinois is a tree. In true links fash-ion, the course is barren and completely at the mercy of gusting winds. As you make your way around the course, the wind will oscillate, blowing in your face and against your back.

The greens are on the small side, and can be very quick and challenging, with substantial undulation in certain places.

“This links-style course can be pretty brutal for the high-handicapper, especial-

ly on a windy day,” said one golfer who recently tried his luck at GCI. “I’d avoid playing from the tips unless you’re a low-handicapper or a real glutton for punish-ment. “But I guess as dedicated golfers, we’re all gluttons for punishment.”

The most memorable, and most an-ticipated, hole at Golf Club of Illinois is the massive 11th, which measures 678 yards from the tips and plays as a par 5. At the time it was constructed, this beast was the longest par 5 in the United States. It’s since been surpassed at a number of facilities. As of June 1, 2010, the longest par 5 recog-nized by the United States Golf Association is a 725-yard hole in Marana, Arizona.

The par-5 11th known as “Grant’s March” is only four yards shy of being eligible for par-6 status. The USGA guide-lines are such that any hole 691 yards and longer from the back tees and 591 and longer from the ladies’ tees can be consid-ered a par 6.

Part signature hole, part tourist at-traction, the 11th plays slightly uphill, with out of bounds lurking down the entire right side. Fescue-covered mounds border the fairway to the left. Two well-struck shots will leave you a short-to

mid-iron from the green, but be careful of two bunkers that pinch the landing area at 160 yards out. Par is an achiev-able score here, but beware doubles and triples.

Golf Club of Illinois has been impressing with its terrifi c conditioning as of late. The course brought in a new superintendent in 2006, and all greenside bunkers were overhauled at that time.

The clubhouse was recently remod-eled and contains a fully-stocked pro shop with the latest styles and equipment, a banquet room that can accommodate

225 guests and a 19th hole that serves drinks and casual fare. Men’s and Women’s locker rooms can also be found in the clubhouse.

A practice facility is avail-able for warm-up or post-round practice and features

grass and matted tees, target greens and hills and a putting green.

To reserve tee times or learn more about the Golf Club of Illinois, please visit www.golfclubofi l.com or call (847) 658-4400.

Golf Club of Illinois is an 18-hole tournament-cal-iber course open to the public. Located in Algon-quin, less than an hour’s drive from the center of

Chicago, this links-style layout contains all the aspects of Old World golf you’ve come to know and love – zero trees, native fescue grasses, rolling terrain, moguls, wide open fairways and plenty of sand bunkers.

Designed by Dick Nugent, Golf Club of Illinois was once home to the longest par 5 in the country. The 678-yard par-5 11th has been surpassed in length, but it’s still one of the most popular holes in the Chicagoland region and a true three-shot test.

The course offers very competitive rates, and is by far the best deal for seniors in town. A clubhouse with locker rooms for either gender, a bar and grill area, 225-person banquet room and loaded pro shop is there to serve all of your golf and event needs.

Golf Club of Illinois has been consistently rated as one of the “Top 10 Chicagoland Courses” by Chicagoland Golf, and has hosted the Illinois Open, Illinois Open qualifi ers, PGA section tournaments and numerous junior events.

Oswego’s Fox Bend Golf Course is a layout that purists will enjoy playing. The 6,890-yard, par-72 is a tradition-

al test of shot-making ability decorated with mature trees, plush fairways and receptive greens.

Owned and operated by the Oswego-land Park District, Fox Bend is fair, affordable and formidable. The layout contains 34 bun-kers and water comes into play on 11 holes. A canopy of 100-year-old oaks and willows tower overhead like relics of a different era as you traverse the landscape.

“It’s picturesque,” said General Manager Brad Doyle. “On quite a few courses the trees aren’t mature, and that isn’t the case here. At Fox Bend, when you fi nish the round, you’ll remember the holes you play.”

A brisk pace of play allows the golfer to develop a rhythm at Fox Bend – a luxury many courses don’t afford.

“It’s a very nice course, in great shape with an interesting variety of holes,” com-mented a golfer who recently tackled the municipal track. “It’s not in a housing devel-

opment, which is a plus. This is really just a well-managed course. Expected pace of play is four hours or less, and they keep people on track.”

In 2011, Fox Bend will host yet another USGA qualifi er. Previously the course has welcomed a number of distinguished tourna-ments - three Illinois Opens, the Illinois PGA Championship, Western Open qualifying and a 2010 USGA Junior-Am qualifi er.

Fox Bend has aged like a world-class wine, growing as a course and as part of the community since its debut in 1967. The golf course was a groundbreaking project built by Brent Wadsworth, owner of the Wadsworth Construction Company. He used the course as an outdoor showroom for his golf course construction business.

Oswegoland Park District and neighbor-ing Fox Valley Park District residents enjoy resident rates and all golfers enjoy reasonable daily rates at one of the western suburbs pre-mier golf courses. Weekday rates, weekend rates, twilight rates and specials are available online at www.foxbendgolfcourse.com.

Like nothing else in the Chicago area...that’s Set-tler’s Hill, which lives up to its name with dramatic elevation changes across 18 varied and memo-

rable holes. Settler’s Hill is more than a golf course, it’s a golf odyssey carved through mature woodlands, prairie marshes and windswept highlands. Fabulous greens, deep bunkers and colorful seasonal wildfl ower displays add to the course’s appeal.

Heralded as one of Chicagoland’s best buys for 18 holes, Settler’s Hill has become a regional favorite. Superb conditioning and casual atmosphere make it welcoming and enjoyable for all levels of golfers.

Settler’s Hill may be the ultimate recycling success story, as it occupies the site of a former Waste Manage-ment landfi ll—a unique history that affords the course its signature topography. A Kane County Forest Preserve facility operated by GolfVisions, Inc., “Settler’s Hill is one-of-a-kind with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside,” comments longtime General Manager John O’Connor. “To play Settler’s Hill is to love Settler’s Hill.”

Cary’s Chalet Hills Golf Club is an atypical golf experience that noted midwestern architect Ken Killian calls “the greatest course I have ever de-

signed.” Killian wasn’t bashful about praising this layout, and rightfully so.

Chalet Hills holds a 4.5-Star rating from Golf Digest magazine, and was lauded as one of the top 5 in the Chi-cagoland area by Zagat Survey.

Exceptional scenery highlights the experience at Chalet Hills. Two-hundred-year-old oaks and hardwoods frame the undulating landscapes from tee to green. Lakes and streams add to the aesthetic value of the terrain and contribute to the risk-reward nature of many holes, like the 140-yard, par-3 17th, an enticing island green.

“Usually, the development of a golf course begins from scratch,” stated Killian. “Here in Illinois, you get a fl at piece of prairie and a blank piece of paper. You bulldoze in hills, plant tree seedlings and watch your design de-velop over the years, transforming itself into your vision. Chalet Hills was different, much different.”

To break from ordinary, plan a day at Chalet Hills.

When designer Ken Killian fi rst surveyed the grounds that would become Chalet Hills

Golf Club he was immediately struck by the maturity and richness of the terrain. Design elements that many times must be artifi cially manufactured were already in place.

There were rolling hills and forests full of old hardwood, hickory and oak trees, some of which are more than 200 years old, to frame fairways and create sightlines. Wetlands and water in the form of existing lakes and creeks add

intrigue and force golfers to use their imagination. Water is a potential factor on 14 of 18 holes.

The entire routing is surrounded by conservation areas, and with the excep-tion of a few homes far removed from the fairways and greens, this is as serene and secluded an environment you’ll fi nd for golf in the Chicagoland area.

“The potential at Chalet Hills present-ed itself not only as a good course, but a great one,” Killian commented, who also had a hand in designing Kemper Lakes. “I liken this course to a sleeping beauty. All I

had to do is wake her.“The result is the greatest

course I have ever designed, period,” he continued. “The property had every ele-ment necessary to create the ultimate golf experience. The trick was to mold fairways, greens and tee boxes into some of the most beautiful nature I have ever had the pleasure to work with.”

A public-access course, Chalet Hills has been lauded for its exceptional layout and setting. The 6,877-yard course carries a 4.5-Star rating from Golf Digest, and Zagat Survey has listed the course as one of the top 5 in the state of Illinois.

If you’re looking to break your rou-tine and experience a truly one-of-a-kind layout, make your way to Cary and check out Chalet Hills. The course is renowned for its conditioning, challenge, elevation changes, exceptional service (expect the beverage cart to fi nd you at least 4 times per round) and affordable pricing.

The late, great Chicago Cub and WGN radio announcer Ron Santo said of the unique layout in Cary, “Chalet Hills is Chicago’s hidden gem.”

“Conditions are fantastic all the time, and the greens are very fair with a lot of hidden, subtle undulations,” said Chalet Hills General Manager Brian Smith. “I don’t want to say they’re the quickest, but they always run smooth, true and at a very good pace”

Each nine at Chalet Hills closes with a scenic and challenging hole. Holes 9 and 18 both dogleg around the club’s main lake and fi nish on a shared green visible from the patio of the clubhouse.

The lake encircled by No. 9 and No. 18 was used by Killian on the par-3 17th

to create an island green effect. This vi-sual dilemma is considered one of Chalet Hills’ signature holes and one of the most recognizable sights on The Chicagoland golf scene.

Chalet Hills concludes with a risk-reward par 5 measuring 494 yards from the back tees.

“It’s very scenic, and a great fi nishing stretch,” said Smith.

Chalet Hills tempts you to cut corners and demands accuracy in some spots with tightly wooded fairways. Four sets of tees enable all skill levels to enjoy the golf course. Virtually every inch of the course provides astounding natural scenery.

In addition to the 18-hole champi-onship golf course, Chalet Hills offers a driving range with 20 stations and a large putting green adjacent to the fi rst tee. There is also a bar and grill with indoor and outdoor seating.

Chalet Hills hosts a number of char-ity golf tournaments each year and is available for weddings, banquets and out-ings. The clubhouse can seat up to 200 guests for functions.

To say that Chicago doesn’t have a rich history in the game of golf is like proclaiming that the beloved Cubs

have been baseball’s fortunate sons over the past decade. When it comes to the game invented over the sandy dunes of St. Andrews, there isn’t a spot in America with a more storied past than the Windy City.

It’s an honor and a privilege to be in the golf business in and around the Chi-cago metropolitan area, and that fact isn’t lost on Dan DeCrow, general manager of Whitetail Ridge Golf Club.

Before going into detail about the routing of the course he oversees or rattling off the measurements of the clubhouse, DeCrow emphasized customer service as the top priority at Whitetail Ridge.

“We take a lot of pride in our service levels and realize that golfers enjoy and appreciate the way they’re treated,” he said. “We aspire to a level of service that makes them want to come back. You’re not doing the golfer a service just by being available and opening the doors in this market.”

Established in 2007, Yorkville’s White-tail Ridge is managed by Dallas-based Ea-gle Golf, an outfi t that mandates excellent customer service as if it were a guaranteed right outlined in the U.S. Constitution.

“We will enthusiastically deliver the difference with radical hospitality at every level of connection with our members and guests,” said DeCrow.

That level of commitment has made a noticeable impression on the golfers

who’ve already visited Whitetail Ridge, as they receive personalized service from the moment they arrive until the moment their clubs are secured into their vehicles for the trip home.

Who is Whitetail Ridge?

Even though Whitetail Ridge did an impressive 31,000 rounds during its third year of operation, there are still a few folks in The Chicagoland area who’ve yet to discover this gem in the western suburbs. If you think you’ve experienced all of the premier golf courses and haven’t challenged Whitetail Ridge, the trip to Yorkville is a must.

The par-71 (5 par 3s), 6,604-yard course is laid out in two distinct nines. The front nine is far more wide open and for-giving, before the back nine ascends onto a ridge where there are more trees and the topography begins to present some chang-es in elevation. Overall the course can be demanding for the more accomplished player, but is considered very hospitable and friendly to novices and beginners.

Whitetail Ridge was designed by noted local architect Greg Martin, who has worked on a number of well-respected layouts in the area including Rich Harvest Farms, host of the recent Solheim Cup competition.

As you play Whitetail Ridge, the pic-ture of an affordable, upscale public course that offers many of the amenities and the atmosphere you’d expect to fi nd at a private club emerges. Service often exceeds what you’d expect to fi nd at a gated golf club with initiation fees.

The practice area at Whitetail Ridge includes a grass-matted driving range and a large putting green where golfers can become acclimated with the speed and texture of the putting surfaces. Weddings and Special Events

Whitetail Ridge is quickly becom-ing a popular destination for golf outings, weddings and special functions. The club boasts a 24,000-square-foot clubhouse with a ballroom that can seat up to 350 people. If you need the space and staffi ng to handle a large event, contact Whitetail Ridge. Golf outings of any type and size (16-144) are fully customizable.

The club also has a bar and restaurant that is open seven days a week during the golf season.

Everything you need to know about Whitetail Ridge, including course descrip-tion, directions, schedule of events and outing information is available online. Visit the course at www.whitetailridgegolfclub.com or call (630) 882-8988. Online tee times are available.

Just four years removed from entering The Chica-goland golf market, Whitetail Ridge Golf Club is steadily maturing into one of the area’s best values. Designed by Greg Martin, who is the architect of

record for Solheim Cup host Rich Harvest Farms, this intriguing layout is suited for golfers of all ages and abilities at just 6,600 from the back tees.

“It’s forgiving for the average golfer and plenty de-manding for the better golfer,” Martin said.

A front nine winding through water and wetlands at the lower end of the property and a back nine situated along a ridge rife with elevation changes and striking views of the surrounding countryside give this track two distinct nines.

Amenities include a fully-stocked pro shop, full-service restaurant and bar, banquet facility and ballroom and 24,000-square-foot clubhouse. Tee times are avail-able online.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Hilldale Golf Club is a good test for any skill level. While Hill-dale might come across as a scaled down version

of the super long courses touring pros play today, don’t let the yardage fool you, this par-71 course has a rating of 71.6 and a slope of 135.

Known for having the “best greens in the burbs,” Hill-dale features no two holes that are alike and demands the use of the all the clubs in a golfer’s bag. In fact, a driver is never automatic off the tees of the par 4s, forcing golfers to think their way around this course.

Couple those characteristics with excellent conditions, ideal location and competitive green fees and golfers really can’t ask for much more.

But there is more. Along with a complete pro shop, there is a practice range, C.K. Mulligan’s bar and grill, a sushi bar and a beautiful banquet room overlooking the course, making Hilldale extremely golf outing friendly. The Greater Chicago area has one of the largest concentrations of avid golfers in the United States, and

with such a sizeable population differing opinions are sure to follow. While it’s open for debate, Hoffman Estates’ Hilldale Golf Club considers its bentgrass greens to be the “Best in the Burbs.”

“The course has been known for years to have the best greens in the burbs, and we’ll hold our course up to some of the private clubs around the area,” said General Manager Bill Salzman. “We’ve had

people that are members of private clubs come and tell us that we have greens that are better than theirs. Really, the whole course is in great shape.”

Thousands of golfers who’ve tack-led this Robert Trent Jones track since it opened in 1971 have backed the course’s “Best in the Burbs” claim, and they return each year to experience big greens that roll fast and true. To test your skills with the fl at stick, put Hilldale on your “must play” list this season.

fi nely-manicured greens are just part of the story at the lone RTJ design in Northern Illinois. In an age when distance dominates the conversation and infl uences practice habits of recreational golfers, Hilldale dares to dream that size doesn’t matter.

At a modest 6,432 yards from the back tees, Hilldale requires not only strong forearms, but also a strong mind. Tacti-cians will fi nd many ways to attack the course as drivers are often cast aside for woods and irons off the tee. Shaping shots and hitting your spots will set the table for approach to those fantastic putting surfaces.

“I think anyone can play this course, but if you learn how to score at this course, you can score just about anywhere,” said General Manager Bill Salzman. “But you have to pay attention and play the right shots. If you watch the pros play on TV they’re not always hitting driver on par 4s. They’re hitting 3-wood or they’re hitting irons. You have to think about what you’re doing on this golf course too.”

Located in the leafy suburb of Hoff-man Estates between the Poplar Creek Forest Preserve and the Paul Douglas Forest Preserve, Hilldale Golf Club is a classic tree-lined layout with some history – the course has hosted numerous Western Open qualifi ers. Water is found on 13 of 18 holes, and is just one of many obstacles at Hilldale that golfers must take into con-sideration. On several holes, positioning your shot for the best angles to the green is vital, and this aspect of the course affords plenty of risk and reward opportunities to keep the gamblers happy.

“I love it when an architect forces me to think carefully and plan ahead before each shot and offers multiple paths to the green – with plenty of opportunities to get stupid,” once remarked the late Phil Kosin, an advocate for the public golfer and a

leading voice on the city golf scene during his career with Chicagoland Golf Magazine.

“It’s a tight golf course – not real long,” said Salzman. “It’s a shot-maker’s course for sure. There’s lots of trouble with a high degree of diffi culty. It’s a very challenging golf course; one we’re quite proud of.”

Hilldale’s 550-yard par-5 second is a perfect example of the plotting required to navigate this traditional layout. A true three-shot hole, No. 2 is highlighted by a section of fairway that snakes through two water hazards squeezing it from both sides.

The approach shot is to a green tucked behind one of those hazards. The course’s website describes the putting surface as, “Huge, with an elephant buried in the middle of it - that kicks wedges away from middle and back hole locations.”

“You have to negotiate your shots, ” said Salzman. “It’s defi nitely a three-shot hole.”

Hilldale Golf Club is one of the best values in the area and features a driving range with all grass hitting stations and a multi-faceted short game area. The club hosts dozens of golf outings each year and is home to a sports bar and grille as well as an authentic sushi bar.

Located in the suburbs south of Chicago in New Lenox, The Sanctuary Golf Course is considered by many to be the best golfi ng value in the Chicagoland

area. In fact, local authority Golf Chicago magazine rated The Sanctuary as a “Best Buy.”

Designed by noted architect Steve Halberg, this 6,917-yard par-72 links-style layout is consistently in supreme shape and provides a formidable challenge for all skill lev-els. The Sanctuary features small, fi rm greens that are well protected by bunkers and tough to hold on approach.

The course’s narrow fairways demand an accurate touch off the tee. Bombers have had success here, but beware…wayward drives will most likely lead to trouble.

In a recent readers’ poll in the Daily Southtown news-paper, The Sanctuary was voted as the top course among a group of 75. The Sanctuary is also rated 4.5 Stars by Golf Digest, an honor that was bestowed upon less than two dozen courses in Illinois out of a group of more than 300.

The Sanctuary’s now boasts a fl eet of GPS-equipped golf carts. For more information on the club, or to book tee times online, visit www.golfsanctuary.com.

Old Oak Country Club is located just 30 minutes from Chicago, and was built in 1926 on a 200-acre tract of land dominated by large oaks, hickories

and Long Run Creek. This area between Orland Park and Lockport has been recently incorporated into the new town of Homer Glen, Illinois.

The mature, 6,609-yard, 18-hole championship golf course has also been enhanced in recent years. The results of these enhancements are obvious: the scenic golf course has been carved out of the natural environment and features fi nely manicured fairways lined with majestic oak trees. Built on rolling terrain, featuring water hazards and sand bunkers, the rustic beauty of this tract is the perfect complement to this challenging golf course.

Built in 2008, a practice range offers a truly unique atmo-sphere for practicing all aspects of the game. Built on the highest point of the property and surrounded by large trees, golfers hit downhill to four large target greens with bunkers. Both grass and artifi cial tees are available.

Adjacent to the tee line is a short game area consisting of a large green with three bunkers and 30 yards of fairway and a large putting green.

More than 80 years after the fi rst 18-hole golf course was constructed at White Pines Golf Club & Ban-

quets, the facility literally remains near and dear to the heart of Chicagoans. Providing the public golfer 36 holes to experience, a terrifi c location convenient to downtown (30 minutes) and O’Hare International Airport (10 minutes) and a tremendous array of amenities, White Pines is popular and practical.

The dual championship courses, East and West, weave through a thicket of trees and around a series of water features. White Pines is a classic Chicagoland layout where those who’ve been trapped in their houses during winter’s most chilling days can expe-rience spring golf at its best.

Originally built in 1928/29 by Jack Doray Sr., who was one of the founding

members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, White Pines was re-tooled from 1977-79.

The modernization didn’t take away from the Bensenville club’s old-time charm – greens of assorted size, pinched tree-lined fairways and strategic hazards. With the West Course maxing out at 6,624 yards and the East Course only measuring 6,371 yards, White Pines allows golfers to get around in four hours or less.

The heavily-wooded areas that defi ne the course place a premium on accuracy, and those who can shape shots and keep the ball moving on the intended line should have success here.

Both courses are consistently kept in outstanding condition, and golfers rou-tinely rate White Pines a fantastic value that exceeds expectations.

“The price for what you got was really great,” said one recent visitor. “I’ve paid nearly twice as much for not nearly twice as good. Excellent bargain and a great golf course. I’ll be going back numerous times.”

“My experience at White Pines was better than expected,” said another golfer. “Excellent conditions and friendly service. The beer cart girl was great. It’s a great value for the money. I would recommend it.”

“Twilight prices are great,” commented a third recent visitor. “The staff is very friendly. This is one of the best deals for a park district course close to the city, and it’s in better shape than most comparatively-priced courses.”

White Pines Golf Dome

When weather allows, White Pines remains open year-round. In case of inclem-ent conditions, the golf course is home to the White Pines Golf Dome. Maintaining a constant temperature of approximately 64 degrees even on the coldest winter days, The Dome is open Nov. 1 through May 1.

The Dome measures 300 feet wide, 300 feet long and 100 feet tall. It’s consid-ered one of the world’s premier indoor golf facilities. The Dome offers the following: three large target greens surrounded by two bunkers each, a 45-foot long contoured putting green, six suspended hitting targets for practicing your accuracy and 50 hitting tees on two levels and a state-of-the-art virtual golf simulator. Lessons are also available from a team of experienced PGA Professionals.

White Pines Practice Range

White Pines Golf Club has a full-ser-vice public driving range with two practice putting greens. The range is open seven days a week from dawn until dusk.

White Pines PGA Professionals are al-

ways on hand to give you their undivided at-tention, or you can sign up for group lessons. Hitting bays feature grass and mat turf.

Golf Outings and Special Events

White Pines has also been successfully organizing a variety of golf outings for more than 50 years. The club’s recently revamped banquet room provides the perfect setting for a wedding reception, anniversary party, bridal shower or golf tournament.

For more information on outing packages, visit www.whitepinesgolf.com or call Ginger Swalve at (630) 766-0304.

Owned and operated by the Bensen-ville Park District, White Pines Golf Club & Banquets is continually improving services and expanding its facilities to better accom-modate its guests. Career and personal milestones can transform an individual forever. A single meeting can be the beginning

of a fulfi lling life in a leadership position. A hole-in-one during a golf outing could give you bragging rights for life. A family reunion can change the course of a relationship. Wed-dings mark the beginning of a lifelong union, as two once independent lives become linked for all time. These transformative moments should be magical. At the Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club, where a multi million dol-lar enhancement to the golf course and clubhouse recently re-wrote the club’s own history, organizing a special event that meets the signifi cance of the moment is an unwav-ering commitment. All of the changes that have taken place in the past few months at Bridges of Poplar

Creek were in an effort to better equip the facility to host daily-fee golfers and guests of golf tournaments, banquets, business meet-ings and weddings. Modernization was achieved on many levels in regard to the 18-hole champi-onship golf course. Water features were manipulated to improve the look, feel and challenge, and drainage was improved. Plaques paying tribute to golf legends were installed throughout the course. Playability will be the focal point of any golf outing at Bridges of Poplar Creek. Aesthetics were enhanced throughout the property, as eight timber bridges were installed to replace steel bridges to give the layout extra pop and appeal. The 18-hole championship course is now an even more pristine backdrop for your special day. Facilities available at the Bridges of Pop-

Each of the two courses at the Indiana National Golf Club at Swan Lake Golf Resort is 4-Star rated in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play,” and each

offers unique challenges. The Black Course is a bit more target oriented than the Silver Course, with water in play on 15 of the 18 holes. There’s great variety here with par 3s offering an assortment of shots and reachable par 5s. The par-5 18th hole presents a classic risk-reward fi nish to the championship course. The fi nal four of the Black offer the player two par 5s, a 210+ par 3 and a 440+ par 4. The Silver Course has water on 11 holes, yet is considered a bit more player-friendly than the Black. Most holes offer plenty of opportunity to play a variety of shots into smallish greens with more mild undulations. The two fi nishing holes present a great challenge, and are rated among the fi ve most diffi cult on the course.

Among the pantheon of golf courses emblazoned with the name of legendary architect Pete Dye, The

Fort is not the fl ashiest. It’s not the most recognizable. It’s not the newest. It is the most historically signifi cant, and a damn fi ne golf experience at that.

Dye, along with associate Tim Liddy, re-tooled The Fort in 1998 to create the wonderfully wooded layout you’ll fi nd tucked away in the shadows of downtown Indy. Designer and canvas just so happen to share a similar background.

While Mr. Dye never saw combat time during his time enlisted in the Unit-ed States Army, he was stationed at both Fort Benning (Georgia) and Fort Bragg (North Carolina). At Fort Bragg he served dutifully as greenskeeper of the base golf course, and during trips to nearby

Pinehurst, developed a relationship with Donald Ross. His love for “digging in the dirt” was born and the rest is history.

Established seven years after Fort Benjamin Harrison was offi cially decom-missioned, Dye stepped in to craft a course in the middle of a 1,700-acre state park. Opened in 1906, Fort Ben was an active military base from World War I until Operation: Desert Storm. The base housed prisoners of war during the World War II.

you can play in the entire state of Indiana by Golf.com, The Fort Golf Course is a beautiful and challenging design known for its tree-lined fairways, rolling hills and undulating greens, which have Dye written all over them. The course has also received a 4.5-Star rating from Golf Digest and was rated No. 1 in Indiana by Golfweek.

“There simply is not a better piece of property in Central Indiana upon which to build a championship golf course,” said Head Golf Professional Jon Chapple. “The Fort’s unpredictable topography and Pete Dye’s visionary architecture have joined to create experience that is unparalleled in the Hoosier State. It is not surprising that time after time the golf course is a regular feature in annual golf course rankings.”

The Fort showcases the best of what Indiana golf has to offer. At 7,148 yards playing to a par 72 over nearly 240 acres, this layout meanders through trees, val-leys and wetlands in order to create an experience that allows the golfer to enjoy nature and the game all at once.

It’s an impossible chore to select just one signature hole at The Fort. Nos. 4, 5, 6, 11 and 18 are all worthy of that distinction. Each of these Dye creations shares a few common traits: thick woodlands and elevation changes, which demands a precise tee shot. Each hole then concludes on quick greens requiring a skillful sense of fi nesse.

The course has also become a popu-lar “Stay and Play” because of the variety of lodging options available.

Golf packages at The Fort include 18 holes of golf with cart, overnight lodging, unlimited range balls, complimentary bag storage and souvenir bag tag and ball. The facility has become a trusted choice for cor-porate and charity outings. Here are some facilities available for lodging and events:

The Main Lodge – A 27-room facility lo-cated just 300 yards from the golf courseThe Harrison House – A more intimate facility with suites and very comfortable overnight accommodations a mere 100 yards from the golf courseOffi cers Homes – Fully furnished 3-bed-room homes that once housed visiting dignitaries and military generalsGarrison Conference Center – The ideal space for your wedding or business con-ference, the Garrison has a dining room that offers daily lunch, weekend dinner buffets and delicious Sunday brunches.

In addition to the conference center, overnight lodging accommodations and championship 18-hole golf course, The Fort has outstanding practice grounds, private and group instruction and men’s and women’s locker rooms.

Tee times can be booked online at www.thefortgolfcourse.com or by calling the pro shop at (317) 543-9597.

Measured by any metric, Peoria’s WeaverRidge Golf Club is one of the best places to play golf in Illinois. Built on 300 up-and-down acres on the former site of Weaver Angus Farms, the 7,030-yard championship course was designed by the team of Dr. Mike Hurdzan and Dana Fry. The Hurdzan-Fry fi rm, based in Colum-bus, Ohio, is responsible for a number of well-received layouts scattered through-out the Midwest, including Wisconsin’s Erin Hills, host of the 2017 U.S. Open.

“WeaverRidge is one of the fi nest sites we have ever worked on with much of the golf course nestled between deep ravines and picturesque valleys above the scenic Illinois River in an area carved by glaciers,” reads the design group’s summa-tion of the course.

Two hours south of Chicago traveling on Interstate 55, Peoria long ago emerged as a reliable barometer of mainstream American attitude. “Will it play in Peo-ria?” is a well-known slogan about gaug-ing whether particular persons, products or promotional themes will resonate with an audience that’s been selected to repre-sent our nation’s middle.

How is the premier course in one of the country’s fi nest mid-sized cities play-ing to the golf course rankings crowd?

Quite well, thank you.In 2009, readers of the trusted Zagat golf

guide pegged WeaverRidge as the top public course in Illinois. Golfweek’s 2010 “Best Courses You Can Play” state-by-state rank-ings listed WeaverRidge at No. 4, just behind usual suspects like Cog Hill’s Dubsdread.

Among public, private and resort courses in the state rated by Golf Digest, Weaver-Ridge slid into the top 20.

On Golf Magazine’s national list of the top public-access golf courses, Weaver-Ridge ranked No. 89.

WeaverRidge has received national acclaim since it was fi rst introduced to golfers in Central Illinois in 1998. That year, Golf Digest positioned the Hurdzan-Fry layout second on its docket of “Best New Upscale Public Courses.” The winner that year, by a microscopic margin of 0.04 points, was Pete Dye’s Bulle Rock Golf Club in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Bulle Rock has since hosted multiple LPGA Championships.

WeaverRidge is an enticing blend of beautiful scenery and substance. The layout itself is outstanding – a traditional course speckled with nearly 100 sand bunkers where the terrain retreats and rises as much as 12 stories.

On the 228-yard 12th hole, a spec-tacular par 3, your golf ball plummets more than 120 feet tee to green. Perched high above the eventual landing area, you’ll marvel at this picturesque hole. To complete the setting, the green is en-circled by forest, and when autumn has turned the leaves hues of red, orange and yellow, this is really a magnifi cent site.

The fi nale at WeaverRidge is an-other spectacle to behold. At a length of 556 yards from the tips, the par-5 18th descends almost 80 feet from tee to green, crossing a creek at the 290-yard mark. Your round wraps on a behemoth of a green; it’s nearly 120 feet deep. Onlookers from the porch of the facility’s clubhouse have a fantastic vantage point 70 feet above the putting surface.

Overall, the nines nicely comple-ment each other, though each has its own defi ning elements. The beauty of indig-

enous prairie grasses and fl owers accents the front nine, while the back nine offers some wonderful views of the area.

There are homes at WeaverRidge as Crain’s Chicago Business pointed out in an article fi led in June of 2010, but they’re not eyesores by any stretch and they don’t negatively infl uence play.

“Few of the state’s top courses are surrounded by homes,” the article started. “WeaverRidge is, with more than 300 upscale Georgian- and Tudor-style homes sprinkled along some fairways, though the residences are back far enough from the landing areas to present minimal bother. Some of the million-dollar edifi ces make the walk seem like a stroll through Architectural Digest.”

In every facet, WeaverRidge em-bodies what the spirit of American golf should be. The course is family owned and operated, serves the community (lo-cal high schools practice here), doesn’t cost an exorbitant amount to play, ranks high among actual golfers and offers a spacious, relaxing setting.

WeaverRidge also features top-notch practice facilities, and is capable of host-ing weddings, banquets or outings. For more information, or to book a tee time today, visit www.weaverridge.com.

Valparaiso is the last gasp of Chi-cago’s suburban sprawl to the southeast; it’s an hour drive from

downtown if traffi c isn’t an issue. If you’ve never lived in the Midwest,

you probably associate the city with the NCAA tournament heroics of Bryce Drew. If you have spent signifi cant time in Chi-cago, Michigan, Indiana or any of their neighbors, and travel with your golf clubs in toe, you might associate Valparaiso with The Course of Aberdeen.

If not, it’s time to change that. The links-inspired design rib-

bons through rolling hills that were once roamed by four-legged creatures, namely those of the equine variety. When constructing The Course at Aberdeen, Dr. Michael Hurdzan and mentor Jack Kidwell worked with the existing topogra-phy to create a layout that emphasized the

organic shapes and swales of the land.“When course development began,

the land was kept in tact as much as pos-sible including environmental areas and wetlands,” said Aberdeen’s General Man-ager Mike Higdon. “Hurdzan’s number one thing as an architect from everything that I’ve read and seen is that he doesn’t like to move a lot of dirt.

“He takes the natural lay of the land and let’s that be by and large the way the course is routed. This course was origi-nally an old horse farm. He didn’t move a lot of dirt, and left all that intact, which is what makes it so beautiful and peaceful. You’ll probably see deer, foxes, rabbits…all sorts of wildlife; things you wouldn’t encounter at a city or municipal course.”

azine. Highlighted by stunning natural aesthetics and a serene atmosphere, this championship-caliber course has become a worthwhile road trip for golfers from South Bend to Springfi eld.

What awaits golfers who make the short travel from Chicago and beyond – a course that offers reasonable prices, a shot-making challenge and Indiana peace of mind.

“When you’re out here, you feel like you’re the only group,” Higdon said. “Each hole has its own unique footprint and no holes are located side-by-side. They all intertwine through a maze of ponds, creeks, mature trees and environ-mental areas.

“You really don’t see any other golfers during the round,” he added. “You’re out there by yourself. Our course enables you to be out there and relax; really enjoy the scenery.”

Hurdzan and his design team have built a number of highly regarded layouts in the Midwest including Wisconsin’s Erin Hills and Peo-ria’s WeaverRidge. The group also led the expansion of the historic 18-hole course at Philadelphia Cricket Club.

The Course at Aberdeen is cut out of the former Timberlake Horse Farms rolling hills and provides a sustainable natural habitat for surrounding wildlife. The tees, fairways and greens are all bentgrass and create a very manicured, country club environment.

The most treacherous section of the golf course is from holes 10-12 – call it northwest Indiana’s version of Amen Corner. The 514-

yard 10th hole is a relatively easy par 5 that can be exploited, but plenty of players have walked off the green frustrated.

The 195-yard par-3 11th is the most challenging short hole at Aberdeen, and requiring a well-struck tee shot to avoid

disaster. Finally, the 418-yard par-4 12th features a carry over two environmentally sensitive areas – one to the initial landing area and another before the green, which creates an island fairway effect.

“If you get through those three at even-par, you’ve done an amazing job,” Higdon remarked.

Every hole at The Course at Aberdeen is strategically placed to enhance its individual character and provide an enjoyable golf expe-rience to every golfer, regardless of the skill level. With an excellent facility and an experi-enced professional staff, The Course at Aberdeen is guaranteed to provide

the total golf experience that every player is looking for.

In addition to a championship design, The Course at Aberdeen is home to a terrif-ic practice facility and a fully-stocked pro shop. The golf course specializes in small corporate outings from 40-80 players.

Rated 4 Stars by Golf Digest’s “Places to Play” guide, The Course at Aberdeen offers a golf experience amid the beautiful Indiana countryside. For more informa-tion on the course, or to book a tee time, visit www.golfataberdeen.com.

Evergreen Golf Club has a long and rich tradition in Wisconsin golf as one of the state’s premier places to play, a club dedicated to giving you gracious and

friendly professional service along with excellent condi-tions and value. We’re proud to be ranked as a 4-Star Golf Digest course and a consistent Geneva Lakes Area favorite.

Evergreen Golf Course distinguishes itself with its ability to operate in inclement weather. The course pro-vides continuous paved cart paths that run through all 27 holes and an excellent drainage system that can stand up to the worst weather. With these features, Evergreen is noted for its long golfi ng season.

The golf course features 27 championship holes that are located on scenic rolling terrain; manicured fairways, large undulated greens and a varied selection of tee boxes. Water hazards come into play on 15 out of the 27 holes, and numerous bunkers surround the fairways and greens.

We invite you to come and see for yourself why Ever-green Golf Club is always a golfer’s favorite.

Sultan’s Run Golf Club is nestled in the heart of beautiful Southern Indiana and stretches over 224 rolling acres of woods, water and wildlife. The zoysia tee, fairways and green surrounds offer a world-class play-ing surface. The roughs are a bermuda and fescue blend, while the green surfaces are of bentgrass. Designer Tim Liddy, a disciple of world renowned architect Pete Dye, took what God had laid out and what the course already offered, and enhanced it. All 18 holes at Sultan’s Run Golf Club have been beautifi ed in some shape or form from entirely new bunkering and reconstructed greens, to complete rework of several holes. The end result is that Sultan’s Run has become a world-class golf facility that golfers will talk about long after their round is done.
