The official Czech name is Památka zesnulých ("a remembrance of those who have passed"), but everyone calls the day dušičky ("little souls") or všech svatých ("of all saints"). People sometimes compare this old tradition to Halloween, but the two don’t have much in common. Dušičky is a quiet time in the Czech Republic. People visit the graves of family members and relatives to light candles, lay flowers and wreaths and spend a few moments. If All Souls’ Day falls on a work day, trips to the cemetery are often taken during the preceding or following weekend. The flickering glow of hundreds of freshly lit candles makes the atmosphere at cemeteries during dušičky time quite beautiful. The weather is usually chilly or rainy, but it doesn’t prevent Czechs from observing the tradition. Source: My Czech Republic.com

SENIOR II CO-ED CLASS at Sokol Chicagoland …provides as much, or as little, physical activity as any participant might try to do, while enjoying a warm, friendly environment. Happy chatter is heard regularly, sharing stories of long-ago years and Sokol participation as children, gardening tips, recitations of chore lists, and sharing food items brought to share at lunch time.

Above, Frank Michalek keeps strong with “crunchies” using a stability ball. Sis. Andrea Scheirer is the instructor for this class which is very well taught and offers a great variety of exercises, warm ups, walking, timed circuits with a variety of “stations”, and weight-lifting. The Senior II Co-Ed Class meets the first and third Mondays of each month at 11:00 a.m. Class is followed by bring-your-own lunch, but often class members bring treats to share. Sometimes the “treats” are actually GOOD-for-you munchies. There is always a lot to talk about around the tables in the upstairs open area near the “kitchen”. Come join the group for morning fun and Stretching followed by exercises!

The Dobias twins, Mildred “Millie” and Nada enjoy the fun and camaraderie of the Senior II Co-Ed class. The workout helps keep them stay ready for gardening chores. Use of stretchy, exercise bands at the stall bars is a frequent component of the timed circuit stations. Colorful “medicine balls” of varying weights are also used to perform “choppers”, side-to-side moves, and lifting from one side floor level to the other side above head level (equivalent to putting an item on a shelf). The Sr. II Co-Ed class frequently uses large exercise balls in various ways. Bro. Frank is seen doing “crunchies” with his feet on top of the ball on the previous page. Come join us; it’s a LOT of FUN!!!
