On Wednesday 8th November I took eight Year 9 and 10 students along to the launch of Wandsworth Young Chef of the Year Award at Burntwood School. The competition involves producing a three-course meal (starter, main and dessert) for two people at the cost of £20. When planning their menu students need to think about the balance of dishes, seasonings, reducing levels of salt and sugar and the seasonality of the fruit and vegetables used. At the launch we listened to various speakers who gave us more information about the competition. This was followed by the chance for students to talk through their menus with professional chefs. I was very proud of how articulate each student was when speaking with the chefs. The cook off at Chestnut Grove takes place on Thursday 30th November to choose a winner who will then go on to represent our school in the finals of the competition in March at Burntwood School. The overall winner will receive £150 cash prize.

FRIENDS OF CHESTNUT GROVE - VOTING FOR £1000

The Friends of Chestnut Grove have applied to the Aviva Community Fund for funding to host an International Day in 2018. This would be to recognise and celebrate the diversity of Chestnut Grove, and to encourage families to get involved by showcasing their cooking, cultures, dancing or anything else that fits.

We have got through to the voting stage, and thanks to everyone’s efforts we already have over 1,000 votes! Thank you! Hopefully we are one of the first organisations to reach this, and will win the £1,000. However, in case we are not, we need to keep voting, as when the voting closes, a further 180 organisations with the most votes will get the funding too!

To vote please follwo the link, register, and you can vote up to 10 times!https://community-fund.aviva.co.uk/voting/project/view/17-2219

Voting continues until Friday 24th November...

COULD YOU DO YOUR BIT TO HELP US GET OUR NEXT GRANT?

We have submitted a large grant to the Mayor’s Greener City Grant for the grounds, and as matched funding we are looking to raise funds though the sponsored brick scheme. You can have a brick engraved for £40 or £75 and this will be on display on the walls of the new building for years to come. The funding from this will raise matched funding for the mayor’s application. So far we have had a good response, and we need more. We hope to have the first lot of bricks up on display in time for the Christmas concerts at school.

You can pay via parent pay, and the form to fill in is downloadable from the website http://www.chestnutgrove.wandsworth.sch.uk/Chestnut-21

As always, any questions, ideas or anything that you think may be of interest to our fundraising efforts, please do contact me on [email protected]

ART DEPARTMENT

Since the beginning of September the Year 8 art specialists have been learning about a process called batik. This is a process that involves applying hot wax to fabric which is then dyed. Where the wax has dried onto the fabric, the dye will resist. The wax is then melted off, to expose a design left onto the fabric. The batik process can be repeated to mix dyes and build on the initial marks that have been made. The Year 8 students are now beginning to hand stitch into their pieces of work to highlight certain parts of their design.

The Year 10 digital art class have been working on the theme of natural forms. Students have been exploring artists who explore pattern within nature, and have then gone on to create their own pattern inspired by the work of Ernst Haeckel. Students began by creating beautiful collages of natural forms and then produced elegant line drawings from the collages created. The drawings were then scanned and the drawings have been transformed into intricate patterns using Photoshop. Students are still working on creating a series of patterns but I have included a few images, as the students are creating some fantastic outcomes. The work below was created by Morgan Brown, Bibi Fox- Harris, Kasey Ingold-Bexley and Adam Valentine.

HISTORY WORKSHOPOn Wednesday 1st November a group of Year 8, 9 and 11 students took part in a day-long workshop with Cultivate, a project aiming to engage Wandsworth young people with the opportunities available to them, particularly in the creative industries. The workshop was focussed on opening students’ minds to the different careers available within the heritage sector. The day was spent with Marie who is a freelance photographer and museum worker; she explained her background in the industry and then set the students a challenge to work together as part of a specific department within a museum.

The students also got a chance to do some object handling with artefacts from various museums across London, including the Transport Museum and the Horniman Museum.

The students were fantastic; they approached the challenges with determination and great creativity. One team even wanted to invite Sir David Attenborough to the event they had been tasked with organising at the Natural History Museum. Another team had to work to sort out the security arrangements for a film crew to use explosions in the painted hall at Greenwich. All the students learnt more about the numerous career opportunities within a museum, especially about the behind-the-scenes careers that you don’t normally think about.

Another great example of Chestnut Grove students keeping an open mind and having a creative approach to their futures!

LITERACYCongratulations to Loredana Ioanitescu whose book review of the ‘Grisha Trilogy’ by Leigh Bardugo has been selected to be in this edition of the newsletter.

This trilogy starts with Shadow and Bone, followed by Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising. The stories are about the young adult life of a girl named Alina Starkov. In Shadow and Bone, Alina finds out that she has secret powers and that her power is the last of that kind in the world. As Alina learns to control her power, she finds that her friend, who is named The Darkling, is trying to capture an animal which will enhance her powers. One of her teachers warns her that that will mean that she will be controlled by The Darkling. In order to get her freedom, Alina has to run away. In the sequel, Alina tries to make a new life with her childhood friend, Mal. She tries keeping her powers secret so as not to alert The Darkling to their new home. Her plans unravel when The Darkling finds them and captures both Mal and Alina. For them to be able to escape, they have to set a deal with an unexpected ally. In the last book, Ruin and Rising, Alina and Mal find that they are in an underground cavern for their safety. They enter a revolution, one which goes against The Darkling and his followers. For them to win, Alina must find the creature that is said to enhance her power even further. That, however, is hard to achieve but you will need to read the book to find out why.I recommend this trilogy because it is truly heart-warming and emotional. I praise Leigh Bardugo, the author, for her work. The trilogy bought me to tears and I couldn’t get enough of it. I read the books so fast that I managed to finish the trilogy in less than four days. I really wished that the story would have gone for another book, but I believe that the ending of the third book is amazing – it brought me to tears. I completely recommend these books to anyone who enjoys fantasy and going beyond the gender stereotypes.

ROMEO AND JULIET WORKSHOP

On Tuesday 14th November, Year 11 took part in an interactive workshop on Romeo and Juliet, in preparation for their impending GCSEs. The workshop provided a deep learning for the students by recapping key scenes and getting students involved! Students were asked to play different parts (in costume!) and also provide a hand in the directing process.

“I really enjoyed that workshop! It really helped me to remember key quotes”. Luke Box, 11 Hepworth

“I feel like the workshop will keep key moments in the play in my head.” Reva Felix, 11 Kahlo

Every week the bilingual department will bring you the etymology (history) of a word or phrase. This week is a Bonfire Fire night-inspired selection (only a week late!):

Bonfire:Nowadays you have to wait until the last surviving relative of someone buried in a churchyard has died before you can relocate gravestones or disturb any grave, but in the Middle Ages it was the practice to dig up the bones after about 25 or 30 years and put them into the charnel house (a building or vault in which corpses or bones are piled).

When the charnel house was full, the bones were taken out and burned on a bonfire, which later became bonfire.

Bless you:It was thought at one time that when you sneezed your soul jumped out of your body, and so people said bless you to ensure that your soul was not ensnared by the devil and that it jumped safely back into your body.

Do you know the interesting origin of a word or phrase? Then get in touch! We’d love to share your knowledge with the Chestnut Grove Community (we’ll obviously give you credit for your contribution!) Just email [email protected] and put ‘for the attention of the Bilingual Department/Mr Sharpe’

BILINGUAL DEPARTMENT

PERFORMING ARTS

On Thursday 2nd November, the performing arts department took students from Years 10 to 13 to see The Seagull at the Lyric theatre, Hammersmith. It was fascinating for the students to see a modern take on a Chekhov classic, giving them a great understanding of how traditional theatre practitioners are used in the 21st century. In their drama lessons students wrote a review of the production analysing the various components of the production.

ANTI-BULLYING WEEK

This week is Anti-Bullying Week and the theme is ‘All Different, All Equal.’ To celebrate, students wore their most colourful odd socks on Monday and bought ’equality cupcakes on Tuesday. The Equality and Human Rights Club raised £127 in 15 minutes which will all go to charity. On Wednesday, students celebrated their differences in a selfie photo booth which they designed and are working hard to use social media to promote human rights.

The students’ next project will be to collect items for the local food bank, including canned goods, toothbrushes, clothes and other useful items. Tutors will collect in items that are brought in. Equality and Human Rights Club meet weekly - all are welcome.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

In the reformed GCSE, the physics equation sheet has been removed from exams, giving students 21 (22 for higher tier and 24 for Triple students) physics equations that they have to learn by heart for their science exams this summer. Last year 11 students started tackling the list. Each week in tutor time, with the help of our sixth form science students, they have a tarsia grid activity to match up all the equations correctly. With approximately 22 weeks before their first science exam, if they can remember one more by heart a week, they will be on track to remember all of them.

YEAR TEAMS

YEAR 7

Year 7 are now well and truly settled into their new school. From teachers and students I constantly hear that they are loving learning and it is an absolute pleasure to visit them in lessons. This week I have rolled out RSL awards which students can be awarded if they’ve gone above and beyond in demonstrating our PROUD values. Congratulations to Wiktor, Katrina, Siofra, Lukas, Zoe and Bethia for winning the first awards!

In lessons, the year group are fantastic, but I feel we could improve with uniform when outside in the playground. I would like to give a gentle reminder that all students must be wearing black outdoor clothing (hats, gloves, scarves and coats), which have no large branding. As always thank you for your support.

Mr O’KeeffeRaising Standards Leader Year 7

YEAR 8

Year 8 have been honing in on their inner writers. They have been exploring creative writing within English and creating an autobiography as part of a wider project in the classroom and at home

In assembly last week they were treated to an insightful look into the newly rebranded bilingual department by Mr Sharpe. They explored what it is like to speak different languages and the advantages and careers that being bilingual can offer.

I popped into the language specialist class during lunch and was blown away by their enthusiasm and strong ability in languages. I look forward to seeing their results in Italian cooking in the upcoming weeks! Lavoro eccellente!

I saw some great work in Mr O’Keefe’s science class where students were carrying out a neutralisation experiment with acids and alkalis, combing hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide to make sodium chlroide (salt) + water. Once they create a green mixture they then boil off the water to make salt crystals.

YEAR 9

Melanie’s amazing Medics! A group of Year 9 students have signed up for an amazing opportunity to experience the world of medicine and be exposed to the learning process that opens the amazing door to becoming a doctor. The programme is part of a research project supported by St George’s University of London. The research title is:

How does the ‘Leanne’s Amazing Medics’ programme affect the aspirations and self-confidence of Year 9 students from low socioeconomic backgrounds considering the pursuit of a career in the medical field?

This programme is a seven-session programme that will be delivered over the course of seven months. The majority of the sessions will be delivered at school and will take place on a Wednesday afternoon from 3:15-4:45pm. The fifth session will be delivered at St George’s University of London and the final session will be delivered at one of the schools we are working with.

YEAR 10 Dear Parents/Guardians,

A short while ago, I asked all Heads of Department to look through a list of suitable revision guides for the students to use. This has now been agreed and I have collated a list of all the books and specifications on an attachment with this newsletter. I have listed them as internet links as the specifications are only available on line and most of the books are cheaper direct from the publisher rather than other providers such as Amazon. I must stress that it is not essential to buy these books, but rather that they are an additional resource that you could purchase should you chose to do so. Congratulations to the following students who have been awarded 15 Proud Points for being Model Citizens by consistently demonstrating good behaviour for learning around the school.

YEAR 11 Important dates

Monday 23rd November – Presentation Evening starts promptly at 6:15pm I love this event on the calendar – an opportunity to publically reward my students for their PROUD!

Monday 4th December – MOCK exams start – I’m pleased to see some many Year 11s revising during tutor time, attending intervention at lunchtimes and after school and it is important that students are revising at home – thank you parents and carers for facilitating this.

The week starting Monday 11th December - students will have study leave and will only need to be in school when they have an exam or intervention has been arranged. Students will have a pass which will allow them the come on and off site during this week.It is crucial that students are on time for their exams!

Page 21: Chestnut News - fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.comfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · Chestnut News Date: 17 Nov 2017 Issue No: 61 MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

Attendance and punctuality again is crucial in all years, with Year 11 being the most important. With excellent attendance and punctuality students give themselves every opportunity to be prepared for their final exams.

Homework is also crucial – students need to be completing their homework – self-directed learning and reinforcing what has been learnt in lessons is shown statistically ‘that it improves performance by one grade’.

Year 11 students will find this a stress and anxious time – eating well, sleeping the recommended number of hours, following a revision timetable and doing exercise will assist in combating high levels of stress and anxiety. It’s important to remember that this stage of school life will not last forever and that it is important to remain motivated, resilient and determined.

I have been to Year 11 tutor time and seen the ‘science equations activity’ (mentioned in the science section) is being practised by all Year 11 students. This activity will culminate in a inter-house competition held in assembly.

Thank you to all parents and carers for your continued support of your child as we all navigate through this important year.

SIXTH FORM

On Monday 6th November Year 12 visited the Surrey Outdoor Learning Centre at High Ashurst, Box Hill.

The trip was to celebrate the successful completion of the Sixth Form probationary passport and to immerse Year 12 students into a teams and leaders challenge course designed to test students’ skills of leadership, teamwork, communication and to build trust amongst their cohort. Such soft skills development is vital to ensure that each student is equipped with the desired employability skills required for the rest of their lives, and the trip proved to be a huge success.

Students successfully navigated the high ropes, low ropes, the trapeze and the overhanging climbing wall, embracing the experience and learning exactly what they can achieve when pushed beyond their comfort zone in a supportive environment.

Well done Year 12. We were very PROUD of you!
