MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

Dear Families

Welcome to the final newsletter of this half-term. This has been an incredibly busy half-term and the time has flown by since we all returned in early September. I am delighted that our new Year 7 students have settled in so well to their new school, as have those students who have joined us in Year 12 from other schools.

Open events

On Wednesday evening we held our annual Sixth Form Open Evening which was incredibly well attended. We are receiving a growing number of applications from students from other schools and so if you were unable to attend the Sixth Form Open Evening and your son or daughter is in Year 11 I would encourage you to get in touch with the Sixth Form team to find out about the application process.

Our final open morning for Year 6 parents is next Wednesday morning between 9.00 and 10.45am.

Outstanding Sixth Form Value Added Scores

The Sixth Form at Chestnut Grove uses ALPS (A Level Performance Systems) to measure our student progress against national data benchmarks from the DFE.

I’m delighted to announce that Chestnut Grove Academy is now placed in the top 10% of schools and colleges nationally based on our student progress.

ALPs generates a three year Teaching Score (T-Score) for each provider to identify trends. Pleasingly, Chestnut Grove’s trends have seen us move to outstanding progress scores:

2017 3 year T-Score = 3.56 (top 25% nationally)2018 3 year T-Score = 3.22 (top 15% nationally)2019 3 year T-Score = 2.78 (top 10% nationally)

These T-Scores identify our national position compared to the A level outcomes of over 2,817 schools and colleges in the UK and provide us with further evidence to support the outstanding judgement we received from OFSTED in January,.

Consultation on school expansion

You will have read in previous newsletters that from next September we would like to increase our intake from 180 students to 210 students per year. This is to accommodate a bulge in primary school children in Wandsworth which will reach secondary schools next year. The local authority is funding the expansion and we are planning on using the new accommodation to create a new Sixth Form block. Details of the consultation are in the link below.

Students are expected to attend the Academy every day with the expectation that each student should achieve a minimum 95% attendance.

Sickness:If for any reason a student will be absent then Parents/Carers are requested to phone the Attendance Officer (Ms Ramsay on 0208 673 8737 option 1) before 08:30 on the first day of absence. If the absence is for more than one day, you will need to phone the school each day of the sickness. A doctor’s note will be required after three days absence.

Lateness:Morning registration starts at 8.45am. Students arriving after 8.45am will not be admitted through the main gate and will be asked to sign in at reception. Students will be marked late by the attendance officer and parents will receive a text informing them that the student has a same day detention to make up the number of minutes late. Students who are late and have a note from their Parent/Carer explaining the lateness, should report directly to the Attendance Officer before going to class. Students who arrive after 10am with no parental explanation are considered absent and are recorded as such on the Academy roll.

Appointments:The Attendance Officer should be alerted to appointments attended during the school day, by a note in your child’s planner, which should also be accompanied by the appointment letter or copy of the confirmation text received.

Please do not call, email or text the school if your child needs to leave school early for an appointment as their note will suffice. This note must be authorised by your child’s RSLMs Ramsay, Attendance Officer

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME

The enrichment programme at Chestnut Grove is an important part of what we have to offer our students. Students are encouraged to extend their horizons, develop their talents, and take part in interesting activities to enhance an already packed curriculum. Clubs run in the morning before lessons, during lunchtimes, and from 3:05pm to 5pm daily, and include a variety of activities; from active pursuits including: dance, football, netball and boxing, to other indoor hobbies such as chess and pottery club. We also have an extensive programme of performing arts clubs throughout the year, and our own Samba Band and Jazz Band! In addition to this we offer targeted intervention sessions led by specialist teachers in a range of subjects including English and Maths, and facilitate homework clubs and a general learning zone run by our learning support assistants in the library. Our enrichment programme helps to build students’ confidence and gives them the chance to make new friends outside of their usual classes. Many of the clubs give students the opportunity to take part in competitions, concerts and tournaments, supporting our sense of school community. There is no registration process necessary, students just need to look through our enrichment programme and choose one or more clubs to attend.

YEAR 9 BOYS’ FOOTBALL

On Monday we took a group of Year 9 boys to the Wandsworth borough schools’ autumn six-a-side football tournament held at Openview Sports Ground hosted by Ashcroft Technology Academy. Our first two games saw us draw 0-0 with St John Bosco and lose 2-1 to Ernest Bevin which meant that we had to win our final group game against Graveney to progress to the knockout stages. Despite dominating most of the game and pushing Graveney back in their half for the majority of the match we just couldn’t find the composure in front of goal to clinch our position in to the knock out stages. It was our first six-a-side tournament as a group and we will look to improve by the time the spring term six-a-side tournament comes around next year.

This coming Monday the boys will play our first league game of the season away to Ernest Bevin.

SHAKESPEARE WORKSHOP

On Tuesday 8th October, the UCL Institute of Education came into school to run an interactive Shakespeare workshop with three Year 7 classes. Students worked in groups so perform a scene of The Tempest each, creating the play in ten lines. Theo Bryer, Head of Drama at the IOE, said “The Year 7 students were charming! They were so well behaved, full of ideas and happy to engage with our student teachers.”Well done 7 Kahlo, Turner and Da Vinci for demonstrating our PROUD values!

CHESTNUT GROVE CELEBRATES NATIONAL POETRY DAY

Throughout Friday 4th October, Chestnut Grove celebrated National Poetry Day. Students explored poems on this year’s theme of truth in tutor time and explored poetry throughout the day in all lessons: whether it be raps in maths, punk poetry in geography or modern poetry in French - see below for some examples.

Year 7s also took part in a poetry hunt, identifying poets disguised as members of staff and finding out key information about them and their work. The winners of the poetry hunt were the following:

Group 1: Isla Nicolson, Lara Sharpington and Beatrice Isted-Aggrey.

Group 2: Leo Woodcock, Umma Zukanovic, Belle Muchmore and Ava Rokita

Some examples of poems from across the school:

GeographyNation’s Ode to the CoastDr John Cooper Clarke A big fat sky and a thousand shrieksThe tide arrives and the timber creaksA world away from the working weekOù est la vie nautique? That’s where the sea comes in… Dishevelled shells and shovelled sands,Architecture all unplannedA spade ‘n’ bucket wonderlandA golden space, a Frisbee andThe kids and dogs can run and runAnd not run in to anyoneWay out! Real gone! That’s where the sea comes in… Impervious to human speech, idle time and tidal reach Some memories you can’t impeach That’s where the sea comes in A nice cuppa splosh and a round of toast A cursory glance at the morning post A pointless walk along the coast That’s what floats my boat the most That’s where the sea comes in… Now, voyager - once resignedGo forth to seek and findThe hazy days you left behindRight there in the back of your mindWhere lucid dreams beginWith rolling dunes and rattling shaleThe shoreline then a swollen sailPicked out by a shimmering haloThat’s where the sea comes in…

CHESTNUT21

Nationally, £2.8bn has been cut from school budgets since 2015 and 91% of schools continue to face billions in budget cuts and have less money than ever before. Chestnut Grove Academy is trying to tackle this head on - and to date we have raised over £400,000 which has afforded us many improvements in and around the school - as well as new opportunities for students. Our latest and most visual campaign, Green the Grove, has resulted in a new green field, more trees, flowers and shrubs and a kitchen garden. Funding is already also secured for an Eco-Club, Green Roofed Canopy and there are plans for bee keeping!

We are now trying to raise funds to replace dated equipment in departments and classrooms and to listen to the whole school community about what they feel they need at the school. Alongside applications to trusts and grants, we are also raising funds through a sponsor a brick scheme – Making your Mark. You can sponsor a brick that will be placed on the south block of the building and will help raise the funds that can be spent where they are needed. You can choose what you want on there and it will leave a lasting mark on Chestnut Grove Academy for the future.

Your chance to make an impact on your school!

CAREERS FAIR 2019

On Thursday 3rd October Chestnut Grove played host to over 25 external exhibitors as part of our drive to offer all our students meaningful engagements with Careers Education, Advice, Information and Guidance (CEAIG).

In attendance were apprenticeship providers such as UK Power Networks, Toni & Guy and St James/St William, degree apprenticeship providers like London South Bank University, Colleges of Further Education like Richmond College and Capel Manor, and employers like the Metropolitan Police Force, the RAF and the Royal Navy.

Students in Years 8 to 13 were given 30 minute slots to attend the event, held in the Sports Hall, and were able to discuss career options, to discover what opportunities exist and how they would go about applying for them.

Feedback from the students was incredibly positive, with many asking for more events like this to be held across the year and others making useful contacts for the future. Feedback from the employers was equally positive, with the RAF saying via email ‘The event was very well run and the students were highly engaged and proactive. It would be great to work with you more going forward. As we discussed we can offer a wide range of products in order to make students more aware of career opportunities.’It was great to see such effective outreach work from the business community, and once again our students were impeccably behaved.

YEAR TEAMSYEAR 7

Year 7 have been very busy with elections for the Student Council. 15 students applied for the positions of Head Student and Deputy Head Student of Year 7. All of the ‘manifestos’ were given to the tutor groups and students voted for the students they wanted to represent them on the council. At the time of writing we are waiting for one more tutor group to complete their voting and then the representatives will be announced. I am so proud of all the students who applied and the positive interest students have shown in the elections.

Week beginning 28th October, the week after half term , is Year 7 assessment week. In tutor time students are talking about these assessments and different revision techniques. Please ensure your child is preparing for these assessments and encourage them to talk to their teachers if they have any worries or concerns.

On Tuesday 7 Da Vinci, 7 Kahlo and 7 Turner took part in a Shakespeare workshop led by student teachers from UCL. The morning was a great success and we received the following feedback from the tutors at UCL;

“The Year 7 students were charming! They were so well behaved, full of ideas and happy to engage with our student teachers. The activity gave our student teachers confidence about going into school for the first time tomorrow. I hope that the Year 7s that they meet will be as lovely”. I honestly could not be more proud of our students and am so pleased they had such a valuable experience. Thank you to Ms C Smith for arranging the workshop.

Finally, thank you to all the families who attended the Fish and Chip Quiz last week. It was lovely to spend the evening in friendly competition and to see the teams of Year 7 students who were having fun competing against their families and teachers. I hope to see as many families as possible next week at the hotly contested inter-house Performing Arts competition.

Key dates for this half-term:

Wednesday 16th October – Year 7 Inter-house Performing Arts Competition (4-5pm)

Key dates for next half-term:

SIXTH FORM

Sixth Form Open Evening – A Huge Success!

On Wednesday 9th October 2019 Chestnut Grove Sixth Form held its annual Sixth Form Open Evening, between 5.00pm and 8.00pm, with three separate talks from the Head of Sixth Form at 5.30pm, 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

The event showcased that which is unique about the Sixth Form experience at Chestnut Grove, the pathways available and the courses on offer. Heads of Department and Sixth Form teachers were on hand to answer questions, promote their subject disciplines and guide students as to suitable options which complement each other. Current students were also available on the night to give the student perspective to prospective applicants.

Attendance to the event was outstanding, with 99 internal Year 11 students (out of a possible 153 students) and over 200 external students present on the night. Pleasingly, the external students came from a range of schools and colleges each hoping to benefit from our Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ provision and wealth of experience and accumulated wisdom in supporting students with Careers Education, Advice, Information and Guidance.

The Induction process into the Sixth Form was clearly mapped out to parents, as was our new building - which will see the Sixth Form placed physically, as well as educationally, at the heart of the school community - due to open in September 2020. The Sixth Form’s exam results, ethos, expectations and student destinations were also shared so that all stakeholders understand what joining the sixth form entails and how we support each student to fulfil their unique potential.
