Chess in
Schools (CiS)
An initiative of Chess Kenya, for the
larger Kenyan Chess Community, by
the Players.
In conjunction with Prox Chess House
and Kenyan Chess Clubs (Westlands
Chess Club, Eastlands Chess Club,
Kisumu County Chess Club, etc.)
In a bid to improve the standards of Chess in the country and ultimately in the larger East
African region, Chess Kenya has set out to take chess to schools. The aim is to tap young
talent and nurture it, get more people to play Chess and eventually get strong Chess
Grandmasters in Kenya.
On this note, we have visited the following schools:

Chess Club members Thomas Nzioki, Geoffrey Mulaga and Brian Kadenge were there as
well as the school is in their neighborhood.

George Githui led the session with a Chess demo board at the front of the class. Later the
students were divided into several groups and the coaching team comprising of Collins
Young, Tom Mghendi and Toni Mutua carried on the instruction. We were later joined
Rehema Kimulu and Purity Maina (bother former Olympiads) who addressed and inspired
the eager girls and we presented the 3 chess sets to the girls.

On Thursday, 6th February 2014 a contingent of Toni Mutua, George Githui, Allan Victor and
Titus Kirega were welcomed by Strathmore School Chess Club patron, Mr. Mwangi. The
team had a great time introducing the game to a group of 43 young and eager minds. Some
were complete beginners and had to be taken through the basics but for those who knew
how to play, further training was provided. Boards from Westlands Chess Club were used for
the training Section and 3 boards were donated from Prox Chess House to kick start the club
and keep it running.
Toni and George had a follow up session for more training. The newly formed club has since
grown to members and they have purchased 10 more boards. The interest is budding and
they can’t wait to start competing in tournaments in the school’s second term.

The Chair of Chess Kenya, Githinji Hinga, had 10 minutes to address the school assembly
on the benefits of Chess and much more. Afterwards, Chess Kenya donated 4 Chess sets to
kick start their club.
Alongside him were CK Sec Gen Joseph Atwoli, Purity Maina and George Githui. The
students were excited about it but since there have their end of term exams, follow up and
training will be in second term.
23. St. Francis Rangala Girls High School – Kisumu County

Scholarship Award
Moses Maina, a student at Riabai Boys High School in Kiambu and a beneficiary of the
Chess in Schoools (CiS) initiative, was among the successful applicants for the Kasparov
Chess Foundation (KCF) Scholarship. He was awarded 1000 US Dollars (Ksh 86,950 to go
towards his school fees. Chess Kenya presented the cheque to the school on Monday, 20th
January 2014. The rest of the students were very inspired and the club has grown to a
capacity of about 100 since.
Alliance Chess Open Tournament
Alliance High School, another beneficiary of the Chess in Schools (CiS) initiative hosted their
own chess event on 8th and 9th February 2014 as part of their Alliance Open Games. 4
institutions took part in the event: Parklands Boys High School, Kabarak Boys High School,
Presbyterian University of Eastern Africa (PUEA) and the hosts. It was a successful event.
They hope to make it bigger next year.
Makini Youth Chess Challenge
Makini School, a beneficiary of the Chess in Schools (CiS) initiative hosted Westlands Chess
Club’s Makini Youth Chess Challenge Tournament. The event had 169 participants with
representation from 12 learning institutions.

Special thanks to Prox Chess House for donating chess sets which were given out to the
schools, Westlands Chess Club for their enormous support in training and spearheading the
initiative, Eastlands Chess Club and Kisumu County Chess Club for their support and follow
up in the schools of their region.
