A hidden gem in the heart of Prestbury village

Very seldom in property do two crucial factors come together so perfectly: a magnifi cent residence in a classic English hall, and the North-West’s most enviable location - Prestbury in Cheshire.

Butley Hall encompasses both, beautifully.

This highly sympathetic restoration of a classic Grade II country hall retains many of the original features. In creating some seven luxurious apartments and three fi ne townhouses, Edengate will make every use of existing materials and natural surfaces, while complementing them with leading edge technology, energy effi ciency and security.

Five properties have already been sold off plan; reserve now to avoid disappointment.

By Kelly Hoppen

Not only is the entrance hall the welcome into a home, but it sets the standard and mood for the rest of the house as well.

A Grand Entrance

FEATURE | A Grand Entrance

Slim floating display shelves do not intrude into this hallway, and the lighting underneath bounces off the polished wood floor, enhancing natural light. Colourful art by Nobuyoshi Araki lifts the monochromatic palette. A Promemoria Pierre stool is perfect for removing shoes.

Lightwells in corridors are the ultimate luxury because the quality of light in the space is superb – pure, white, clean and fresh. Here a soft-grey oak floor with matching skirting boards expands the width of the corridor.

Entrance halls create that first crucial impression. Whenever I come home, I look forward to experiencing the sense

of wellbeing that my hall engenders. That is what you are designing for: the excited sense of homecoming. First impressions are lasting ones, and you do not get a second chance to create them.

When you are designing, look at your home as a whole space, and imagine moving through and around it fluidly. Think about whether you are having wood or stone flooring, where this flooring leads and how it will work in conjunction with other rooms, as ultimately all rooms lead off the entrance hall. There must be flow and continuity between spaces to create harmony.

Your hall is your hall, so use what you have and make the absolute best of it with well-planned lighting and attention to detail. The hall must be practical, with a shelf or console for keys and bags, and cupboards for shoes and coats, but do always bring in that element of display with mirrors, flowers and objects. This is key to upping the sense of welcoming wow.

As with entrance halls, remember to keep the flow of floor finishes harmonious throughout, as corridors link rooms to rooms. Work with, not against, the architecture of your home, and make much of textural contrast in your choice of materials and finishes.

Page 7: Cheshire Luxury Homes & Interiors Magazine Spring 2013

7CHESHIRE LUXURY

A textural feast in this chalet hallway includes wood-clad walls of horizontally laid planks in play with highly polished marble floors, gilt leaf-shaped vessels and a figurative stone sculpture. The effect draws the eye towards the main living spaces. Light plays a crucial role in this design, as the entrance hall is on the lower-ground floor – this lighting scheme sets off infinite reflections, giving the space dynamic energy despite the lack of natural light.

Page 8: Cheshire Luxury Homes & Interiors Magazine Spring 2013

8 CHESHIRE LUXURY

The entrance hallway in my London home makes me smile every time I come home. The 1960s zinc mirrors from Philip Thomas are perfect for the space, striking just the right note of glamour. The long, slim double shelf allows me to display an ever-changing scene of flowers and objects. They are overlaid in this way because the house is in a crescent, and this was a great solution to disguising the curvature in the architecture. Nickel capping on the corners is a signature feature of the house – it is both highly practical and chic. The taupe poured-resin flooring runs throughout the ground floor.

HALLMARKERS• Design for the wow-and-welcome factor,

as well as for practicality; a hallway gives the first impression of the interior of your home.

•Createcontinuityoffloorfinishes, sothatyour rooms will flow harmoniously from one into the other.

•I have exterior doormats, but you caninset a black coir mat within the hall flooring inside the entrance if you wish.

The grid will be enormously helpful when you design the doorways and doors, and in how you finish skirting boards – in corridors they can be matched to either walls or floor equally effectively.

I approach the lighting design for corridors as I would for any other space, in order to make the most of them, as often there is little, if any, natural light. Low-level lighting that throws light to the floors, then bounces up into the corridor is particularly inviting and beautiful, as well as being flattering.

Corridors are spaces, not just roads through the house – sculpture, objects, star pieces of furniture and pictures can all be used to give these spaces personality and charm. Do not be surprised by how just one well-judged vessel with beautiful flowers or a plant can transform a corridor from feeling unloved into being warm and full of life.

The entrance hall of this listed house, where little could be changed because of legal restrictions, has been thoroughly modernized with a black-and-white palette, and centred and defined by placing a section of black oak within the Thassos white marble floor. The Monpas table pro-vides the ideal spot for an impactful flower arrangement. The rest of the space is simply and beautifully finished with white-painted walls and a series of three Pearl pendants with crystal drops from CTO Lighting.

The beauty of this space lies in the tone of colour and the almost metallic textural quality of the plaster walls in conjunction with the marble floor and giant Shield plant pot from DK Home, a bronze sculpture in its own right. The rectangular niche built into the curved wall creates a yin–yang balance and a perfect display point.

CORRIDORSThe roads through your home are not places where you spend long stretches of time, but you do use them constantly, so their design is no less important than that of the rooms themselves. They are the linking spaces, so your design choices – materials, finishes, lighting and furnishings – should be in keeping with the overall feel of your house.

MODO Cucine has developed a reputation as a charming boutique store with a personalised service that makes us all feel welcome. They design kitchens by Warendorf and Bontempi to suit everyone’s lifestyle and budget and are proud to have built a reputation for bespoke designers of stone. We went along to see for ourselves and met up with owner Lisa Mather.

From the minute you walk in there is a charismatic feel about the place and you instantly feel at home. The showroom has a decadent touch with many beautiful stone items, which Lisa told us are either designed by herself or sourced from around the world with the help from her family who are involved in the industry & complement the MODO Cucine product offerings as required.

Exciting times ahead at MODO Cucine

Page 22: Cheshire Luxury Homes & Interiors Magazine Spring 2013

22 CHESHIRE LUXURY

Having recently decided to run MODO alone Lisa shares with us her exciting plans for the future.

“MODO Cucine has been established for over 7 years and I’ve enjoyed every second of it from designing our very first kitchen to planning for the future. The brain never stops and ideas are constantly evolving, I have a motto that the only consistent thing in life is change and I love it!

2013 is going to be a particularly exciting year as we will be introducing a new kitchen brand called ‘Jack Badger’ as seen on Channel 4’s ‘Kirstie’s Vintage Home’. I believe there is a market out there for a little something old with a new twist. Our kitchens are typically contemporary however I am often asked for handmade pieces, such as dressers and spice racks to complement the more traditional properties we work with – ‘Jack Badger’ do just that.

MODO Cucine will also further develop our long standing relationship with Warendorf, formerly Miele die Kuche by introducing an innovative new display into the showroom. In addition we shall be working very closely with their exclusive design range by Piet Boon, something rather exquisite when it comes to German Kitchens and won’t be available from any other manufacturer.

Page 23: Cheshire Luxury Homes & Interiors Magazine Spring 2013

23CHESHIRE LUXURY

Our Italian supplier’ Bontempi’ is always at the forefront of designs with striking new ranges including a fantastic entry level kitchen for those of you not looking to break the bank.

We love to play with different materials and finishes and Spekva have fulfilled our desire by introducing a new sandblast finish to their range of solid wood worktops, absolutely stunning and will be on show at MODO this year.

If a more technical and high specification design is what you require, we have a new range by ’Dornbracht’ “Since 1950, the name Dornbracht has signified the production of high-quality designer bathrooms, kitchen fittings and accessories. Decades of innovation have created iconic ranges of specially configured fittings and sinks. Taking their cue from commercial kitchens, Dornbracht products make for smoother processes and fewer compromises, such as dedicated WATER ZONES and instant near-boiling water (93°C) at the press of a lever.”

Please do come along to visit our showroom & see the fantastic brands & products that we can tailor to your needs.

I look forward to welcoming you into MODO Cucine!

There is a rising trend: savvy home owners are turning their lesser used rooms, attics, even single garages to fully fledged bespoke entertainment rooms for less than you may think.

I ’m quite taken aback with the fact that finally in the last few years it has become possible to have a truly immersive state-

of-the-art cinematic experience in your very own home from around £10,000. Not DIY but an integrated system installed by world experts.

It’s not the incredible rate of change of technology hardware that surprises me with which this hunger for the latest gizmos

inevitably means that prices drop as they become mass market. What has given me the biggest thrill is that this complex technology now works together better than ever and - thanks to the forbearers such as Apple’s iPod, the manufacturers now take note that the key to this clever technology should be in the simplicity of how the end user controls it. Gone are the days when you need a plethora of remotes and a lab coat technician by your side.

Transforming your day room...

Long before the hardware is specified or a screen is fired up, you need to start with the basic question that you may have already pondered: location? Perhaps you have a living room, a spare bedroom or an outhouse where you have pictured your new theatre metamorphosing before your eyes. The location does need to meet certain criteria surrounding space, layout and suitability and a recent client had set his heart on converting his attic, sadly this particular one wasn’t suitable. But on our way out, we spied a single garage that was being used to store junk. Suddenly we had our room. A surprisingly smaller space than you may think required.

However, a dedicated space doesn’t have to be the only option. More and more customers are happy to utilise a current sitting room for a dual functioning cinema/games room in addition now that the technology elements can be practically removed from view once not in use leaving a only a harmoniously designed living space.

The Design Practice by UBER built an award-winning room within a small space in their converted design centre UBER Interiors to show that it is possible to create a dual-purpose room to satisfy a range of functions with this in mind.

From its initial appearance we designed a luxurious looking small sitting room complete

with usual refinements comprising, large modular sofa, fireplace, coffee and tables with ambient lighting. The large 9-panel bespoke artwork filling one wall is complemented on the opposing wall with similar small pictures (they’re actually rear surround speakers) and you would be hard pushed to believe that the room has any other purpose than for relaxation. It is not until you pick up the iPad on the table that you realise with the touch of one button that the room has a hidden talent: In true Bond-esque style the lights dim, the fire flashes to life, curtains draw, and a gentle hum as the middle panel of the wall art moves back and upwards to reveal a 50” TV that moves forward and comes to rest perfectly flush with the other artwork panels. It is immediately apparent that the sound that now greets your ears from behind the artwork - made from acoustically transparent fabric screens - is of an exceptional quality... and those that have had the first hand experience, tend to break into a smile if they have not done so already. But that’s not its party trick...

The 50” TV is simply not engaging or detailed enough for your HD cup match. The touch of another button and a full HD anamorphic projector screen glides down in front of the panels.

From an unused single garage To a cinematic haven

The systems themselves are a joy to use, as an example choose from lists of your favourite actors, directors, or a box front cover picture which can reshuffle to offer alternative suggestions to match the type of movie highlighted. LIGHTING YOUR FIREFOR OVER 50 YEARS Twenty first century chimney sweeping bears little resemblance

to it's 18th century cousin. Blackened sweeps, urchin boys and a certain Walt Disney movie mean we associate the service with soot, dirt...and dancing.

Today, chimney sweeping is clean, quick, professional and essential; solid fuel fires and wood and pellet burning stoves all produce a build up of flammable creosote and soot - even smokeless fuels produce ash debris - and if left they can lead to house fires or even carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Cheshire Chimney Sweep Company, part of the Shuff & Co. Group, has over 50 years experience of keeping chimneys clean and safe, and is registered with HETAS and The National Association of Chimney Sweeps.

Whilst white sheets and brushes are still very much part of the kit, sophisticated state-of-the-art equipment, such as the RodTech Power Sweep system, smoke testers and CCTV are used to identify and remedy potential hazards quickly, cleanly and with minimum disruption.

So much more than just the latest interior design accessory; a stove delights the eye, warms the body and soothes the soul whilst providing an efficient, cost effective and sustainable method of heating the home.

By emitting a radiant heat, a wood or multi-fuel stove keeps a home cosy and warm more cheaply than gas and three times more efficiently than an open fire whilst providing your favourite room with a welcoming focal point.

The Cheshire Stove Company specialises in stove design, supply and installation and works with leading manufacturers of tradi-tional and contemporary style stoves, suitable for all styles of property, fuel types and budgets.

As part of the Shuff & Co. Group, The Cheshire Stove Company can also provide associated services such as chimney sweeping, surveying and preparation, building and renovation work and interior design.

Knutsford is a new showcase for gorgeous bathrooms and kitchens that are perfect for the properties of Cheshire, whilst Manchester and Chester offer convenient city centre locations.

Fired Earth is perhaps best known for its beautiful tiles. Collections include handcrafted English-made decorative tiles, iridescent glass mosaics, timeless stone flooring, hardwearing porcelain and reclaimed terracotta. But it’s not just tiles for which the company is renowned. It has three paint ranges – one produced in collaboration with the National Trust as well as a unique range of contemporary wallpaper.

The team at Fired Earth work tirelessly to ensure everything it offers is relevant and extensive and, with this in mind, they continually source new and interesting products. Particularly notable are the new stone ranges.

The Hamptons collection, inspired by America’s East Coast, is made up of timeless sumptuous marble, which is both tactile and a joy to look at. Each piece that makes it into the range has been carefully sourced and considered before being allowed in. This is particularly noticeable in the new Marble and Diffusion Stone collection, which is made up of beautiful limestones and travertines.

Besides over 50 years combined experience in the stone industry, MG Marble and Granite (UK)

Ltd have formed strong working relationships with suppliers and quarries from around the globe.

MG Marble and Granite (UK) Ltd have earned a reputation for excellence with our investment in state of the art machinery and our time served stone masons, along with our experienced and conscientious in house installation teams which keep MG Marble and Granite (UK) Ltd at the forefront of the Granite, Marble and Quartz industry.

MG Marble and Granite (UK) Ltd have an extensive range of Granite, Marble, Quartz and Stone. Whether it is for bespoke kitchen worktops, marble staircases, vanity tops, bar tops, bathrooms, contract or residential, the choice is endless.

MG Marble and Granite (UK) Ltd, along with their own range of quartz, are approved fabricators for Caesarstone, Silestone, Samsung, Compac but to name just a few.

MG Marble and Granite (UK) Ltd recently completed this prestigious project in Wilmslow, Cheshire. The kitchen, designed and installed by long term client and friend, Jon Hartwoods from Hartwoods Signature of Prestbury really has the wow factor. The final decision for the worktops was Artico quartz from the MG quartz range.

The design incorporated a tear drop inlay in 20mm Iron Glitter from the Galaxy quartz range. MG Marble and Granite (UK) Ltd rebated the 30mm Artico quartz so the tear drop design would fit perfectly. The furniture and the quartz worktops complement each other perfectly as the worktops are shaped elegantly to follow the shape of the furniture with millimetre perfection.

Page 64: Cheshire Luxury Homes & Interiors Magazine Spring 2013

Design for the second phase of the project was crucial as this is the main feature to this luxurious home. The grand staircase to the property really is amazing as you enter through the entrance to the home. The Classic Royale Marble staircase boasts elegance and grandeur.

As the staircase was almost complete, the client asked MG Marble and Granite (UK) Ltd to clad the back wall at the top of the staircase in matching material of Classic Royale Marble. This really was a master stroke on the clients behalf as this has finished the staircase to perfection. The design of the staircase, along with the choice of marble, really puts this home in a league of its own. MG Marble and Granite (UK) Ltd templated the staircase, with great detail placed on the shaping of the stairs.

The Classic Royale Marble was fabricated at the factory on their state of the art machinery and finished to perfection by the skilled craftsmen at MG. The marble was faceted around the bottom steps and along the side stringers to follow the curves. The installation of the marble was perfect and the client was extremely satisfied.

With the two main features in the home now complete, the client asked Spencer to create some designs and colours for a feature dining table for the family dining room. The colour was an easy decision for Spencer. He knew this had to be a dramatic granite so there was only one choice, Cosmic Black. Spencer and the client decided the edge detail would be 60mm thick with an ogee edge dropping down to a flat polish. This has now been named as the “Las Vegas” edge detail.

Page 65: Cheshire Luxury Homes & Interiors Magazine Spring 2013

The whole project is now complete and the family are in their home. The kitchen, staircase and dining table all look completely out of this world and the craftsmanship, attention to detail and overall design from MG Marble and Granite (UK) Ltd keeps them at the forefront of the granite, marble and quartz industry.

Aeon prides itself on spearheading innovation, introducing this year a new concept in

designer radiators, Twister. In this revolutionary design the nine flat fronted stainless

steel radiator tubes have been twisted along their entire metre length, having been

mirror polished on one side and finished in brushed satin effect on the other. Variations

on Twister include models with 180, 360 and 720 degree twists. Twisting each tube

increases water flow via a subterfuge effect, increasing radiator efficiency.

Aeon radiators range from small towel warmers to the mighty 31,611 Btu (9,254 Watt)

output Millennium. Every radiator is hand-finished to create the collections’ stunning

‘metal in the raw’ brushed or mirror finish stainless steel effect. The craftsmanship

and quality of Aeon Radiator Heaven products is such that a 20 year guarantee applies

across the range.

TESTIMONIAL

Dear Julie,

Stephen and I just wanted to thank you for creating our wonderful kitchen. We love it so much I’m still excited to enter it each morning. It really greets me everyday and fills me with enormous pleasure. It works so well as a modern, flowing kitchen with Miele appliances and carefully thought out use of unit space.

The room comes into its own when filled with family and friends and lots of cooking is going on. The island which I love so much transforms itself from a lovely tactile piece of leathered granite adorned simply with flowers to a workspace filled with platters of food, pots and pans, drinks, nibbles, etc., and still the space never runs out! You helped us plan everything so carefully that when we’re busy cooking for lots of people everything flows effortlessly.

Our home is Victorian and we also had a few antiques which we wanted to work into the space, but as keen cooks, we needed a contempory approach to our kitchen. From the very beginning, you took the time to really listen to us and carefully interpret what we wanted into a kitchen which we love so much. It may be a glamorous Siematic kitchen with a definite wow factor, but it still feels homely and welcoming.

Most of all, you were so lovely throughout the whole process and we always felt confident that we would be happy with the result. We’re so pleased we chose you to create our kitchen for us, thank you!

Kind regards,

Jo and Stephen

By Phil Spencer

If anybody knows anything about buying and selling homes it is TV’s Phil Spencer. He has been on our screens, with his co-host Kirstie Allsopp, for over ten years finding and locating the best homes in the country for the right budgets. Here he tells us about what a garden can add to the home and its value.

Garden FEATURE | Garden, Garden, Garden

GardenGarden

Gardens are the new home extension, so make this valuable space work. The English have an out-and-out passion

for gardens. No matter how much or little space you have, from a tiny city patio to a grander walled country garden, every square inch of coveted green land counts. Gardens are an antidote to the bustling, crazy life most of us lead these days. Being able to sit and enjoy a few minutes’ peace breathing in some fresh air in a sunny spot, or even simply just being able to look out at a garden, can regenerate the body and soul. The desire to create little Arcadias in our own back yards is part of the consciousness of those living in the British Isles. Rough and wild or planned and orderly, our gardens, roof terraces and other outdoor nooks are all part of our identity. The number of people who like

to visit great gardens like Sissinghurst in Kent, Barnsdale Gardens in Leicestershire and Castle Howard in Yorkshire always staggers me. Over 3 million belong to the National Trust in order to see gardens that cost £11 million per annum to maintain. This illustrates how the opportunity to possess even a sliver of the great outdoors is crucial. Recent research shows that Britons spend more than £5 billion per year on their gardens. Bling gardens are going out of favour, according to the latest statistics, which have recorded a drop in the sales of garden furniture and barbecues, while grow-your-own products and low-maintenance items for city gardens are in favour. People are more aware that a garden is a living thing and not just outdoor wallpaper. Less is more – with simpler designs – is the new garden mantra.

Page 91: Cheshire Luxury Homes & Interiors Magazine Spring 2013

When questioned for a recent survey, 60 per cent of buyers felt that some form of outside space was important, and 78 per cent that owning some kind of garden at the back of a property raised a home’s value by 15 per cent or more. A quarter of those interviewed believed a garden upped the value by over 20 per cent. Some of the most prized features are: a spacious garden, easy maintenance, ready-made entertaining areas and mature shrubbery. Keep in mind that the front garden is the first thing people see when they arrive at your home. Apparently, men, in particular, are put off by a garden that isn’t well looked after. It is probably the thought of spending every weekend battling with out-of-control shrubbery, overgrown lawns and crumbling outbuildings that puts them off.

Country GardensMost wannabe purchasers hunting for

a farmhouse in the country would expect a decent-sized garden to come with the property. Most would want a generous lawn, flowerbeds, shrubbery, trees and a vegetable patch. At the very least, a rural home should off er a bit more space than a town garden to justify moving out of town into the countryside. And in these times, when people are keen to grow their own produce for health reasons or to save a bit of cash, having access to their very own vegetable patch is moving higher up the wish list. Even those with green fingers might baulk at a massive country garden that is complicated to tend. Ease of maintenance is good, so consider putting in an irrigation system if starting from

scratch. Or at least carry out the research to supply information on how it could be done and what it would cost. Raised beds are another good idea – they are easy to access and the garden tends to run less wild if you have them edged with wood or barleycorns (Victorian stone tiles).

Is your garden level? Some gardens spread over one or more tiers, which can look attractive but might put people off when it comes to mowing, edging and climbing up and down. I think people like level gardens, largely

for ease of maintenance, particularly if they are laid to lawn. Just like houses, spend money on the structure of the garden if you can. Buying lots of expensive plants might add less value than working out where a good big feature

tree can go, along with a patio and pathways. As a property finder, I know that potential

buyers are rarely keen to go back for a second viewing to a place with a neglected garden – unless it goes with a house that is a bit of a ruin and they think they can make money upgrading both. Often, people love the house, but they don’t love the garden – so they don’t buy the house. Another no-no is concreting over a garden. It is depressing and will alienate most buyers.

The Bigger Plant Company is a family owned and run specialist nursery which has now been trading in a wide range of semi mature and in some cases, fully mature trees and shrubs for over a decade.

During this time they have established well tried and tested suppliers of a wide range of advanced stock mostly sourced in Italy and other areas of Europe, where the development of personal and long-lasting relationships ensures only the best service and quality.

By sourcing plants that are already of a significant size, they can deliver instant impact to a new or re-landscaped garden, making The Bigger Plant Company a favourite with top garden designers and landscapers across the North West.

Customers regularly sing the praises of their very personal service, based on a wealth of experience in supplying and installing all kinds of stock – from a small bush to a one and a half ton tree – often in the most difficult of situations.

A visit to their two acre nursery is a delightful experience, where a warm welcome is assured and inspiration is guaranteed.

Instant impact!A properly planned garden can provide colour, texture and interest all year round and the inclusion of a ‘statement’ shrub or tree is a key element to its success.
