As a Sponsored class in SCAD, the Marshmellow Fun Company challenged us to design several food related toy guns for the 2012 NY Toy Fair. The Mentoke shooter combines the science of Mentos and Coke, creates a fun game, but also a chance to do scientific experiments. This is my first design experience, and I learned a lot about design process in real world.

Ideation
Sketch by Marshall Jamshidi
We’ve thought about many ideas around toy guns, targets, ammos and game play, and the client picked several from them. The Mentoke Shooter is one of them.
Prototyping
The first prototype does not work, but we moved on to develop the working functional prototype.

3D Model & Render
We built several foam model to discover the optima size for the toy gun, in order to build the final model in 3D.
Digital model was built in Rhino and rendered in Keyshot.(Model: Yuan Si, Render: Chen Lu)
Thanks to SCAD’s 3D printer, we’ve made the real model in a short time.

This is the project for human factor class. The goal of this project is to get comprehension about the human body, tool usability and the injuries could be made by a product, thus to develop designs that are more ergonomic and cause less injuries.

We asked several people to hold the chainsaw to find out which muscles are involved in the use of the tool
IdeationWe focused on the handle of chainsaw to develop ideas.
IdeationAfter the professor’s feedback, we decided to prototype these four ideas to do the usability test.

The Gulfstream Center of Design is the SCAD building of industrial design and many other majors. To give student a better knowledge of materials, the school are planing to build a material library, with touch screen technology incorporated.

This is the project of Design in Context class. The require-ment is to build a product mainly with wood and sell it. This project improved my pro-totyping skills, and made me think about the relationship between prototyping and 3D model, and which is better?
DevelopingAfter brainstorming, I decided to make a on-bed laptop table, which is asked for by my friends.
The first idea is a new mechanism that never been used, however it turned out too complicated and not reliable.
To simplify the design and inspired by the Apple smart cover, I decided to move on this direction. The second model works well as a table, but can not be folded.
How to fold?Third and fourth version, trail and error
To make the table collapsible, I made too other models to figure out a good way to fold. However the mechanism is too complicated that it became a puzzle that nobody can fold/unfold it.
Developing
DevelopingStruggling with joints and hinges, the fabric came to me as a hinge. It turned out good result. After two more models, the mechanism is fixed.

Scale model making is my main hobby since I was 7. I’ve made tons of tanks, airplanes and battleships. Though they are model kits which provide plastic parts, a lot efforts are still needed to make them realistic. Airbrush skills and other after effects are also important to make models look real.
