If you have a short comment you would like to make, call the Speak Out line at 623-5887.

Sunday, 9:21 p.m.I read the article about

the ward boundaries in the Press Gazette and I am listening to the talk around town. My question is, what are the mayor and the city council up to? I feel like they are up to something, but they are doing a pretty good job of hiding it.

Sunday, 5:58 p.m.“County needs a

new courthouse.” Since when does a politician make sense? Answer: Only when it suits their purpose! To attempt to build a new courthouse in a down economy is like putting a screen door on a submarine, it just isn’t going to work. This “new courthouse idea”, tell volumes about the intelligence of these so called elected SRC leaders. Unemployment

is up, business and home foreclosures are up, gas, food and services are up and this politician thinks it’s time for a new courthouse. Somebody get a rope! Like most politicians, stupidity rules the day when the spotlight shines on their ideas.

Sunday, 9:37 a.m.Yeah, this is Monte.

This is to the lady who wrote about being a vegetarian and not letting her son eat meat. She suggested that cows are bad and ruining the ozone. These vegetarians have always claimed that cows ruin the ozone by passing gas. Well they do this by eating grass. If we start eating just grass then we will be ruining the earth as well. Just a little thing to think about.

Saturday, 8:09 p.m.Yes, this is Dean from

Bagdad. I am calling to response to the person calling Monday about

the fire on Audiss Road. When a page goes out for a possible structure fire people need to wake up and realize it is a box alarm and multiple fire departments respond to the scene. Thank you.

Saturday, 5:25 p.m.Hey this is Dennis.

I like W.O. Jones’ letter, especially the part about us being in Iraq for nine years. What did we accomplish? They did kill Hussein, but is all that worth it? I hate that we had to be involved in any war. I point out Israel and the Six Day War. Six days and it was over. The first time we were in Iraq with the first Bush in the White House, Colin Powell, and Gen. Schwarzkopf it took us two weeks. If we must go to war, get serious and get the job done as quickly as possible and bring our soldiers home.

Saturday, 4:14 p.m.Yeah, this is Bobby. I

have a pet peeve. I love to do crossword puzzles. Who ever puts the crosswords in the paper must not work them. You should never put one across the center fold of the paper. It needs to be put at the top or bottom of the page so you don’t have to do a bunch of folds to work it. Please see what you can do about that.

Editor’s note: We will work on that.

Saturday, 3 p.m.Yeah this is Harry. The

fire on Audiss Road where the man was complaining about. Any time my house catches fire I hope those seven trucks and fire fighters come to my house. I will never complain about too many vehicles.

Saturday, 11:01 a.m.Excuse me

commissioner, but wouldn’t it be a little less expensive on the taxpayers to improve the current courthouse ramp, rather than building an entire new courthouse?

Friday, 4:38 p.m.Yes, I want to wish

happy birthday to Lady Liberty in New York Harbor. She still looks beautiful. She has gone through a lot, but I am still so happy about her. Happy Birthday Lady Liberty and may God protect you for several years to come. This is Maria.

Friday, 4:23 p.m.This is Bobby. This

doesn’t concern people of Milton yet. But I read in a paper where the mayor of Pensacola wants the people to take down their tents, but the city council voted to temporarily lift the rules on tents and let them stay downtown. I guess anybody can stay in Pensacola as long as it doesn’t bother the occupy people.

A Pace woman will spend the next five years in prison after she was con-victed of having sex with a teen-ager back in March.

Sheryle Lynn Vanlandingham, who was 41 at the time the crime took place, was sentenced on Tuesday to 66 months for felony sexual assault of a 16 or 17-year-old. Vanlandingham will spend an additional year in county jail for contributing to the delinquen-cy of a minor, a first-degree mis-demeanor.

According to Sgt. Scott Haines with the Santa Rosa Sheriff ’s Department, at 5:45 p.m. March 2, a Santa Rosa County deputy was patrolling in a wooded area along the

power lines behind the Gulf Power Substa-tion located on East Spencerfield Road in Pace.

While on patrol, the deputy noticed a ve-hicle parked in the area and saw two individuals behind the vehicle that appeared to be involved in sexual relations.

When the deputy pulled up to investigate, Vanlandingham, who was nude, ran to the passenger side of the vehicle and got inside.

The victim remained behind the vehicle.

After speaking to the two in-dividuals, it was determined that both were having sexual inter-

course as the deputy arrived at the scene. When she is released, Vanlandingham

will be required to register as a sex offend-er.

The investigation con-tinues into an arson Mon-day night on Kentwood St. in Pace.

For John and Katrina Figueroa, this night is an anniversary they would rather soon forget.

“I was in Milton with my children and my broth-er when I got a call from my husband,” Katrina re-called. “Then when I got home I could not believe what had happened.”

What stunned Ka-trina was the fact that her father’s car had been torched by two individuals who remain unknown at this time.

At 8:30 p.m. Monday night, dispatchers re-ceived a 911 call from John Figueroa that his father-in-law’s car was on fire in the driveway.

Witnesses stated that they observed two sus-pects running from the vehicle after it exploded. One of the suspects was engulfed in flames as he was running from the scene.

The flaming suspect caught nearby woods on fire as he ran through them, while the flames from the burning car melt-ed portions to the front of the Kentwood St. home in Floridatown where the

Figueroa’s live with their children.

Pace Fire Department responded and was able to extinguish the fire.

Burned clothing be-longing to the suspect was found at the scene.

It is believed the sus-pects left in a vehicle that was waiting on a nearby side street.

Other witnesses stated that they observed the suspects walking up to the victim’s residence wear-ing Halloween masks car-rying large buckets.

The incident is cur-rently being jointly inves-tigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Santa Rosa County Sher-iff ’s Office.

There have been re-ports of an individual be-ing treated at West Florida Hospital that suffered gas-oline burns, but according to Sgt. Scott Haines with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff ’s Office, there is no connection between the individual at West Florida Hospital and the arson in Floridatown at this time.

“We are continuing the investigation,” Haines said. “We know of the burn victim at West Florida, but we have not been able to establish if they were in-volved in Monday night’s fire.”

For the Figueroa’s this is a harrowing experience

that brings back memo-ries from just over four years ago.

“I was expecting my four-year-old daughter when we lived over on Jar-rett and Hazlenut when someone threw a Molo-tov Cocktail through our kitchen window,” Katrina recalled. “That fire dam-aged our kitchen, dining room and about half the home.

“It was his only car and he was coming back to get it (November). He let us use it when I didn’t have any transportation and we needed a car. He spent over $1,000 to make sure the tires were good and it was in good running shape for us.”

presidential election, we had no other option but to fine her for this violation.”

When Quarles first be-came a third party registrar, she did so because of the two clubs at Pace High School she was organizing.

“I use to do registration drives at the school and Ms. Bodenstein informed me I was doing things wrong,” Quarles recalled. “As soon as she informed me of this, I did everything just like I was told.

“I was doing this to help educate my students, not for any political party or purpose, I was teaching stu-dents about government,” Quarles said. “When I was helping the club drives, I would have to file quarterly reports and all these other matters the state required, but I let my third party sta-tus lapse at the end of the 2011 school year.”

Quarles’ last school-wide voter drive was over a year

ago on Oct. 10, 2010, and her last quarter report was on May 1, 2011, after she regis-tered her students April 14.

“Each time I registered my class I sent a letter in with it asking Ms. Boden-stein if there was a problem or issue to please let me know,” Quarles said. “I nev-er heard from her until I got a copy of the letter written to the state saying I was a fre-quent violator of the election laws.”

Quarles said she has re-cently learned that the new law requires 48 hours to get voter registration cards in.

“I understand the 48 hours,” Quarles said. “But if I took the cards and mailed them right after the stu-dents filled them out and they got right out in the mail, it would be cutting it close if they were received by Ms. Bodenstein’s office in 48 hours.”

According to information obtained by the Press Ga-

zette, Bodenstein received the applications from the September classroom proj-ect in 10 days.

The presidential election error came when a school-wide voter drive was held.

“A student officer who was helping me with the project put the registra-tion forms in a folder and I was unaware of it,” Quarles said. “When I noticed what happened, I immediately called Ms. Bodenstein and got them into her like she asked.”

Quarles said she has talked to Sen. Greg Evers about this matter and while he supported the law, he also understands the teacher’s situation.

The voter registration law was a result of what hap-pened around 2008 when hundreds of voter registra-tions were turned in by those out of the state, which some feared opened the door to possible voter fraud.

Main Street, but the committee was looking at ansulary costs involved,” said Milton City Manager Brian Wat-kins. “Currently, the chief will hold an officer over or have an officer come in early. If we close off a street, the em-ployees to do this and run the street sweeper the day before. All of these were cost the city absorbed.”

Other actions during the meeting included:

Council members ap-proved to raise parking fines from $10 to $30 and in handi-cap spaces from $100 to $200.

Members approved a policy revision in the appli-cation for events, parades, festivals, special activi-ties and sponsorship of events policy concerning barricades and barrels. The revision took care of language on who was responsible for pick up and delivery of the barricades and barrels.

Council members voted to amend the code of ordinances to state no dogs or pets are al-lowed in any city park. This does not affect the walking trail at Rus-sell Harber Landing, which is gov-erned by Water Management.

Members voted to purchase new playground equipment for Carpenter’s Park at a cost of just under $59,000.

Approved the review of two ran-dom inspection reports and approved further inspections at Pollard Trailer Park on Sanders Street and approved to move forward with the demolition of a duplex on Byrom Street.

Violation from page A1keeping because of its cost and low rid-ership, which didn’t increase until the summer months.

Like most transportation programs, grants helped power the pilot program in its first year. Lynchard was hesitant that the county would be able to keep re-ceiving grants if the program continued.

Kelly Robertson, who joined the marketing team through the Northwest Florida regional planning council, said that she, along with other colleagues, have spoken with riders who depend on the bus service to get them to and from work and other essential locations.

“When you talk to the riders, you see the need is there,” Robertson said.

According to Model, county commis-sioners will discuss the future of the transit program at the Dec. 5 county commission meeting. She is expecting a vote by that Thursday at their regular commission meeting on whether the bus program will see another year.

Model said that since the transporta-tion department has added more routes and bus stops, ridership has been sky-rocketing.

“People have to learn about the ser-vice, decide if it works for them, and make the necessary changes,” Model said. “From December through Au-gust we saw the ridership numbers rise steadily.”

Robertson said that the transit pro-gram sent out fliers to households along bus route earlier this week, and those letters should have arrived in mailboxes Thursday. The letters notify households of the routes and times the bus operates daily.

Robertson said the council is also uti-lizing window clings on the bus windows that alert people standing, driving, or sit-ting outside to catch the bus.

“We call them rolling billboards,” Robertson said.

And because they are on the buses, the only cost associated with the adver-tisement is the cost of the window cling.

According to Maggie Peterson, who presides over the Northwest Florida re-gional planning council, ridership rose 11.6 percent form the second to third quarter of the program’s first year.

Once a quarter, Model said the trans-portation department conducts a board surveys with riders, and said that in each survey period, about 25 percent of riders utilized the bus service to get to work or to go to job interviews. About 11 percent utilized the bus to get to educational fa-cilities or for training.

“The self-employed workers do land-scaping, clean houses or offices, paint houses and do carpentry work,” Model said. “Some have been able to expand their work from one county to another. Some workers ride the bus because they

are temporarily without a car.”Both in August and September, the

program saw roughly 20 riders a day on its route that runs from 5:05 a.m. to 8 p.m. One of its more popular destina-tions is the Target/Publix shopping cen-ter on University Parkway in Pensacola, which helps connect people to and from Pensacola’s ECAT bus route.

During further investigation by the Press Gazette, it was determined that the shopping center does not allow the bus to drop-off or pick-up riders in the parking lot of the shopping center, forc-ing the bus to stop on the side entrance of the shopping center.

“The most common request (we get) is for more frequent service,” Model said. “With two buses in operation and such a long route, we only offer four round trips between Pensacola and Milton each day, three of those going into East Mil-ton. This can leave up to five-hour gaps between the times a bus passes a bus stop.”

Model said two buses drive all day long and stop roughly four to five times a day, depending on the location.

A stop that was recently added to the route was at Pensacola State College campus in Milton.

“This doesn’t just connect students to the Milton campus,” Peterson said. “They can connect to a bus in Pensacola if they are taking classes at the Pensaco-la campus as well.

“It’s really connecting two campuses together.”

Despite a warning from Lynchard, Model said she is moving into December with her head up in hopes that the county will extend the project another year.

“If the program continues into a sec-ond year, we would certainly look at re-vising the schedule to remove unused bus stops and add others,” Model said. “I haven’t spoken with the commissioners regarding the transit service since Au-gust, so I’m not aware of any changes.”

After Moammar Gadhafi’s downfall as Libya’s tyrannical ruler, politicians and “experts” in the U.S. and elsewhere, including French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe, are saying that his death marked the end of 42 years of tyranny and the beginning of democracy in Libya. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said Gadhafi’s death represented an opportunity for Libya to make a peaceful and responsible transition to democracy. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said, “Now it is time for Libya’s Transitional National Council to show the world that it will respect the rights of all Libyans (and) guide the nation to democracy.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that “Libya must now quickly make further determined steps in the direction of democracy.” It’s good to see the removal of a tyrant, but if we’re going to be realistic, there’s little hope for the emergence of what we in the West call a democracy. Let’s look at it.

Throughout most of mankind’s history, personal liberty, private property rights and rule of law have always won a hostile reception. There is little older in most of human history than: the notion that a few people are to give orders while others obey those orders; the political leadership classes are exempt from laws that the masses are obliged to heed; and the rights of individuals are only secondary to the rights of the state. The exception to this vision feebly emerged in the West, mainly in England, in 1215 with the Magna Carta, a charter that limited the power of the king and required him to proclaim and recognize the liberties of English subjects.

The Magna Carta served as inspiration for other instruments of personal liberty, such as habeas corpus and bills of rights, and five centuries later served as inspiration for the U.S. Constitution. The ideas of liberty and limited government were cultivated by great British philosophers — such as Francis Bacon, John Locke, Thomas Hobbes and David Hume — and on the Continent by the likes of Baron de Montesquieu, Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Through the works of Western philosophers and the politicians influenced by them, including the founders of our nation,

the idea emerged that political leaders couldn’t run roughshod over the common man.

The key point to recognize is that Western transition from barbarism to civility didn’t take place overnight; it took centuries.

More importantly, for the most part Western civility and its institutions were not transplanted; they emerged from within Western civilization. Where they were successfully transplanted, it was done through Western colonialism, such as in the cases of the U.S., Canada and Australia.

In Libya and most other countries in the Arab world, what we know as personal liberty is nonexistent. According to Freedom House’s 2011 “Freedom in the World” survey, as well as Amnesty International’s annual report for 2011, most North African and Middle Eastern countries are ranked either “repressive” or “not free.” Moreover, I believe that there’s little prospect for Arabs ever being free and that Western encouragement and hopes for democracy are doomed to failure and disappointment. Most nations in the Middle East do not share the philosophical foundations of the West. It’s not likely liberty-oriented values will ever emerge in cultures that have disdain for the rule of law and private property rights and that sanction barbaric practices such as the stoning of women for adultery, the severing of hands or beheading as a form of punishment, and imprisonment for criticizing or speaking ill of the government.

What should the West do about the gross violations of human rights so prevalent in North Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere? My short answer is to mind our own business. The only case in which we should interfere with Middle Eastern affairs is when our national defense or economic interests are directly threatened. That is, for example, if Iran were to meddle with Middle Eastern oil shipments or if we discovered good evidence of its building nuclear weapons, then we should militarily intervene. What they want to do to one another is none of our business.

Politically correct

Did you notice the politically correct WEAR-TV and their policy on not naming the color of a criminal in their news reporting? Some of the latest ones are the three

that shot a cab driver, then the cab driver ran into one of the criminals, no race reported.

Then the story on two people who poured a flammable liquid on a car, then one caught on fire, no race reported. This has been an ongoing policy with

WEAR for sometime now. We do not know if they

are black, white, yellow, or red. It is my opinion, that since they do not report on this, their policy must be racist.

They would rather cover up the facts, then try to protect the public

from criminal acts. I would bet that if 90 percent of crime was done by white criminals, they would report on the race. This kind of reporting is dangerous to society in general.

Democracy is impossible

Letter to the editor

Pro ConMAT BILL

Topic: Should the city of Milton fund Scratch Ankle and First Fridays

Bill, I love going to events, but there are underlying issues that many of us just don’t see.

Apparently, this is what the city of Milton is looking at, it proposes discontinuing financial support for unsuccessful events such as Scratch Ankle and First Fridays.

Now I know there is a form groups fill out to hold an event, and on that form there are charges for trash containers, barricades, and other essential items to help make an event successful.

Those barricades were crucial for Milton — especially after this past year’s incident in which a girl ran into a parade and was injured.

At one time, the city even charged to close roads, which is something they no longer do, but there are many costs people do not see and in many instances, including myself seem to take for granted.

The police chief schedules officers to work these situations, which in many cases includes overtime, by asking an officer to stay late or come in early.

There are costs associated with erecting road-closed signs, running street sweepers and more.

Who do you think picks up the tab, Bill?

Not the organizations holding the events. It is the city of Milton.

I hear people complain about having little to do in Milton. Once you take away funding, there may be less to do. Those same people will still be singing the same note. We need events like these in Santa Rosa County for those who don’t want to

regularly load their car up and drive to Pensacola.

Everyone is complaining about building a new courthouse. Well, we won’t even get to see a courthouse, or anything for that matter, if the city keeps dishing out money to these events. Milton can’t afford to pave all its streets so it certainly shouldn’t be giving money away.

It’s high time we take note and look at what the city does cover for an event and understand why they might not be writing a check there are in-kind types of things they can do.

In talking to Milton City Manager Brian Watkins, some events cost the city up to $2,000.

Bill, do you think these organizations can afford this?

In these times when people are already crying about a proposed tax increase for a new courthouse, do you think the public can afford this?

Remember, the city gets its funding from the public — the same people crying about taxes for the court-house.

While it might not be the “hip” or “popular” thing to do when it comes to Main Street Milton and events like Scratch Ankle or First Fridays, these things still bring money to the local economy. When businesses get money, they have funds to pay taxes. So, it’s really a vicious circle.

Perhaps these events need sponsors. Those businesses that sponsor events usually get attention from the visitors.

The city needs to look at the bigger picture and stop funding projects. It needs to worry about the bigger issues in the community.

Mat, you call me cheap skate. You call me a tightwad. Perhaps this is a case of one mule calling the other mule “long ears.”

I want to ask the city, and everyone involved in the decision to discontinue financial support for Scratch Ankle and First Fridays, what criteria will be used to deem an event “unsuccessful?”

Isn’t the goal of this to draw people? So how many people equals success?

These event attendees visit our shops, stores, and other spots along the Blackwater River, Willing Street, Elmira Street, and other points in the City of ‘Six’ Flags.

I understand there are questions of having to pay police overtime, the cost of workers placing signs and workers cleaning streets, but what are some of the costs we pay for things we are not aware of?

The city seemed excited about having a Milton police car and officer to escort the Milton High School band.

That is a great thing, but at five games or so per season and each game taking roughly four to five hours we need to add up the actual costs and miles.

As I said in the beginning, I question how the city will deem things successful or unsuccessful?

I understand negative public responses, but factors like lack of participation could be misleading.

If the council is worried about negative public responses, it might have wanted to reconsider cameras at traffic lights.

But that didn’t stop the city so we have to question if the municipality is really that concerned about negative public responses.

If it is important for officials to be at an event for it to be called successful, then maybe we should also cancel the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade or how about the Milton High homecoming parade.

We think our leaders (city and county) could take more of a role in events like Veterans’ Day and more.

In a time when businesses are struggling, we want to promote downtown.

Milton is a beautiful place and with some work, support, and input, what some consider unsuccessful could be successful.

I bet if Milton looked at the number of homes with their lights off this past Monday night, they would want to cancel Halloween.

Every governmental agency will spend money it should not and I will grant some feel this is a waste of money and effort, but just like we want economic development, we need things to attract people.

If the city is not going to support these events, who will?

Things come and things go, but if you want something to be successful for Milton, then maybe the council and mayor should step up and show them how to do it.

If my memory serves me, a young future political figure wanted to start Scratch Ankle.

Maybe he should meet and explain to those doing Scratch Ankle now, how they can revive it and return it to its glory.

It is easy to stand on the sidelines and complain; it is another thing to want the city to grow.

And that’s the real choice.

The hidden expense is costly What price, entertainment?

Santa Rosa Press Gazette publisher Jim Fletcher proudly wears his crown after having the Black and Gold Throne delivered to the Press Gazette office. This gold painted toilet is a fundraiser for the Milton High School Mighty Black and Gold Band Boosters. If you would like to have this throne delivered to a

friend or business, call 206-5094. After a few laughs, Fletcher paid his $20 and sent the throne to Pace Walmart Manager Steve Williams to welcome him to the area. The throne should be there until later today.

The Milton High School Band Parents Association will also be sponsoring a craft and rummage sale

on Nov. 12 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Milton High School Track. Spaces are available for $5 and you must bring your own tables. For more information or to reserve a space call 206-9199. They are also planning on having door prizes, a kid zone and the famous Milton Band Booster shish Kabobs.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff ’s Office collected 56.2 pounds of prescription drugs during its first ever Drug Take-Back Day.

“I am very pleased with the public’s participation in this initial effort put forth by our agency,” said Santa Rosa County Sheriff Wendell Hall. “By collecting these prescription drugs, we are able to make sure that they are properly disposed of, while keeping them out of the hands of people to whom they are not prescribed.”

Because of the huge success of this event, Hall is also launching a new program at the Santa Rosa County Sheriff ’s Office that will allow the public to come and drop

off prescription drugs to the same locations listed below, any day of the year during normal business hours. This will make it more convenient for our citizens to dispose of the drugs properly.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff ’s Office collected prescription pills back on Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Santa Rosa County Sheriff ’s Office District 3 station building and the Navarre District Office located at 8597 High School Blvd in Navarre.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. More than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services

Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Every day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. The majority of these drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) in conjunction with state and local law enforcement agencies, throughout the United States, have conducted these drug take back events. Nearly 4,000 state and local law enforcement agencies have participated in these events, collecting more than 309 tons of pills. The DEA continues to hold these events every six months.

Drug Take Back Day a success

Milton and Pace High Schools kicked off the 2011-12 girls soccer seasons with games this week.

The Lady Panthers hosted Crestview on Tuesday night and took a hard 2-0 loss.

Crestview came out and quick-ly took control of the match which seemed to cause Milton to fall on their heels early as the game was 1-0 at intermission in favor of the visiting Lady Bulldogs.

“We didn’t play our best by any means, but you have to give a lot of credit to Crestview,” said Milton head coach Jeff Klug. “They came out and played with a lot of energy from the first whistle. They had a lot of speed and that seemed to give us problems all night.

“We know we are capable of playing better and we look for-ward to getting back on the prac-tice field to improve.”

Randi Bass tried to keep Crest-view out of the net as she recorded six saves in the loss.

On Monday, Pace got off to a roaring start with a squad expect-ed to make some noise in District 1-4A.

Florida State commitment Rylee Hart scored four goals and Mississippi State commitment Mary Kathryn Taylor scored three goals as Pace dominated Pine Forest 9-0 in Pensacola.

Also finding the back of the net for Pace were Drew Bradley and Lana Chechak.

The Lady Patriots dominated the match so well defensively that the Lady Eagles did not even challenge Pace goalie Katelyn Burkhart, who did not record a single save.

Chechak handed out three as-sists in the win while Hart and Taylor each was credited with one assist.
