SUPER MARIO GOES MOBILENintendo has announced it is to put its name to mobile phone games. This is something that has been talked about for years, after people started playing more on iPhones than Nintendo 3DSs, especially in the west. But what sort of games will Nintendo make for mobile devices? Are we months off playing Super Mario 64 on our new Galaxy S6s?No place for ports? Well, no. And by the looks of it, much of the games' development will not be done by Nintendo but another company, DeNA, which has teamed-up with Nintendo to create mobile games. Here's the mission statement as per Nintendo's announcement: "Nintendo and DeNA intend to jointly operate new gaming applications featuring Nintendo IP, which they will develop specifically for smart devices."DeNA went into a little more detail in its own announcement, saying that the games would be entirely new projects "rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system."Dispel any visions of waves of existing Nintendo games suddenly spilling onto Android phones and iPhones. In short, Nintendo isn't that stupid. It knows that the virtually mandatory freemium/low price mobile model would instantly devalue its console/handheld properties. However, there was an interesting little excerpt from the DeNA statement we should take notice of: "all Nintendo IP will be eligible for development and exploration by the alliance." No brands are off limits. Not Mario, not Zelda. Still, it's certainly no guarantee we'll see archetypal games of these brands on mobile, and Nintendo is likely to be very strict about approving any mobile games that feature Zelda and Mario IP. They're just too important for other areas of its business. Older gamers may remember when Nintendo loosened its grip back in the 90s, resulting in the outright Philips CD-i FMV turd The Legend of

Zelda: Wand of Gamelon (among others). To get a clearer idea about the sorts of games that will result from this partnership, we need to make some suppositions about how the partnership will operate. You may not have heard of DeNA, but you may have encountered two of its arms, Mobage and ngmoco. Mobile gaming veterans may feel a warm glow at the mention of ngmoco, which made some of the best early iPhone games, like Rolando and Star Defense, but it’s Mobage that is the most important element here. As well as a developer/publisher, Mobage is a gaming platform used predominantly in Japan, a system used to flog DeNA’s games alongside Google Play and the iPhone App Store. In the past it has attracted upwards of 30 million active users. The creation of a Nintendo network like this is the most important part in Nintendo’s eyes, it seems:“Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. The membership service, which is targeted to launch in the fall of 2015, will be built on DeNA’s extensive experience and capabilities in online membership services.”Nintendo is after some of the social-powered success DeNA has achieved, and is not happy to just make do

with the infrastructure of the Apple Store and Google Play. During the press conference where this deal was announced, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata admitted as much:“The fact is, however, [mobile] is a highly competitive market and only a handful of content providers have

been able to show enduring results. If Nintendo cannot make it to that handful of

winners, it does not make sense for us to be engaged in the

software business on smart devices.”

If the Mobage platform is

Nintendo’s inspiration for this deal, it seems that — as many of you may have dreaded —

freemium is the model Nintendo

will focus on. All of Mobage’s greatest

successes are free-to-play. Examples include

Rage of Bahamut and Blood Brothers.

This is not the first time DeNA has made a deal with a holder of immensely important IP. In 2012, DeNA struck a similar deal with Disney, and aside from the Nintendo deal’s increased focus on creating a (what sounds like) closed platform from which games can be distributed, alongside the phone app stores, it gives us an idea of how Nintendo mobile games might be made. Star Wars is a Disney property nowadays, and the most recent mobile game made based on it is Star Wars: Galactic Defense. It was developed by DeNA Santiago, and handily the studio has created a

developer diary that explains a little about the game’s creation.Despite all the positivity of the video, it appears to be a Star Wars re-skin of the popular tower defence title Kingdom Rush (stylistically) with far greater use of micro-transactions and social elements, in an effort to encourage player loyalty. It’s a strategic game, in the sense that its design has been strategically put together to have the best chance of floating in the mobile space. Smart or cynical? It depends on where you stand. The developer diary’s subtext suggests Lucasfilm’s involvement is more about brand compliance than game design. Is this what is in store for Nintendo’s mobile game future? Note Nintendo did not also announce a new mobile game development division, suggesting that its mobile games may be developed in much the same way: DeNA and its subsidiaries do the legwork while Nintendo checks for brand compliance and quality. Nintendo is effectively handing over the game design reins because DeNA has much more experience in this area. Nintendo has failed to deal with the way mobile gaming has evolved in the last six years, where DeNA is a native. Of course, at this point we don’t know about how involved Nintendo will be in the game design plans for its mobile games. Anything is possible, and its not hard to imagine Nintendo being more than a little precious about its brands. But what DeNA has done with Disney’s IP suggests we’re looking at pretty conventional mobile fodder where micro-transaction returns are as important to the design as game mechanics. Fine-tuning mobile transactions within games is an art, and getting that right is what separates the “handful of winners” Iwata identifies from the also-rans. You can see this in the wording of the announcement from both Iwata and DeNA: both say they will “develop and operate” mobile applications. Mobile games aren’t a product anymore, but a service.

OREGANO CLOSES IT’S DOORS

Oregano was born out of the love of food by its owners Dermot & Catherine Regan. Having worked across the island of Ireland in the hospitality industry, the two Northern Irish natives set up their very own restaurant in 2005, just a short distance from Belfast in the Co. Antrim town of Ballyrobert. The restaurant was situated in an old country house setting dating back to the 1900’s with sprawling lawns, and it is in this setting that the couple decided upon their theme, a comfortable, warm, welcoming environment,

as though customers are being welcomed into a home, with the husband and wife hands-on daily in the operation. The restaurant had a family feel and the locally sourced food was apparent in the menu and given a modern twist. If you didnt get a chance to experience their menu, don’t be alarmed.Their sister restaurant, The Potted Hen will become their main focus and carries on their love of local produce combined with great service, so their legacy will continue.

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Coun-cils, working in partnership with the Public Health Agency, are hoping to reduce the number of accidents within the home. Two people die each week in Northern Ireland as a result of accidents that occur in their own homes. The staggering statistic was recently revealed by Health Minister Jim Wells as he launched the Home Accident Prevention Strategy for Northern Ireland, which aims to reduce the number of uninten-tional injuries and deaths caused by home accidents.Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Coun-cils are encouraging residents to take a look around their home and check for potential areas of danger. This could include looking at tripping hazards, testing your smoke alarm, ensuring fires and heaters are well guarded, securing blind cords and keeping cleaning products out of the reach of young children.Residents over the age of 65, and households with children under 5 years or vulnerable adults who meet the eligibility criteria can avail of a free home safety check. This check is a confidential visit, arranged at a conve-nient time. It will involve a visual check of the home, which will help identify home safety risks. The Home Safety Officer can also offer advice and answer questions on home safety topics such as, preventing trips and falls, poisoning,

burns, scalds, blind cord safety and carbon monoxide poisoning. Free home safety equipment items may also be offered, sub-ject to availability and eligibility. In addition to the home safety checks, the Council’s Home Safety Officers can display in-formation stands at events and provide talks for groups on the topic of home safety. To request a FREE check, or to find out more about this confidential service, please con-tact the Home Safety Officers at either Antrim Borough Council by [email protected] or telephoning 028 9446 3113, or Newtownabbey Borough Council by emailing [email protected] or telephoning 028 9034 0160.

Q I’m a 55 year old and have high blood pressure but I take medications and I am generally okay and have no other health issues, I’m booking a holiday abroad do I really need to get travel insurance I’m try to keep the cost down?A. Having a comprehensive policy in place is absolutely essential for all travel-ers whatever age or health, you need to be protected should the worst happen. Firstly you need to declare all medical conditions, while you may be tempted to keep quiet about pre-existing medical conditions when applying for cover, this is a risky move. Claims arising from conditions that you already have will not be covered un-less you have declared all your medical history, as well as hospital visits and the medication you are taking. We all carry expensive gadgets i.e. mobile phones or I pads to name a few so check the policy limit on high-value gadgets Most insurers have an overall limit for the amount you can claim for expensive items, so make sure you check this. If not, you could end up out of pock-et should you need to make a claim.

Not all sports will be covered as stan-dard, 'risky' activities, such as bungee jumping or scuba diving so if you are planning on taking part in any, you should check with your insurer to see if cover is available, or if you can pay a premium to include that activity. One that has been in the headlines lately is that policies may not pay out if you’ve been drinking. Policies often have exclusions for being under the influence of alcohol. This means that if you need to make a claim after having consumer alcohol, it could potentially invalidate your cover, leaving you to foot the bill for medical expenses and other costs. When choosing a policy, never buy on price alone, as cheaper policies may have a high excess or have exclusions. The key is to look carefully at what is offered, and the service that comes with it.

Cinderella actress Lily James has dismissed criti-cisms that her waist has been made to appear too thin in the Disney film as "irrelevant". The fairytale has proved a box office hit in the United States - but it has faced a backlash from parents claiming the princess has an unnaturally small waist.Lily James, 25, reportedly had to go on a liquid diet to fit into the tight-fitting corset for the role.Questioned over criticisms of the waistline ahead of the film's UK premiere, James said: "I've had friends' kids and a little boy Daniel who is nine and he said 'It's amazing how you promised your mum to be kind and good and remembered it'."You just thought, that's the message."Why on earth are we focusing on something so irrelevant?"The remake of the classic Disney film has courted controversy ever since a trailer showed James in a blue princess ballgown with a tiny waist. Some accused filmmakers of using digital wizardry to make it look smaller, but this has been fiercely denied.Sandy Powell, the film's costume designer, told reporters at London's Claridges Hotel that she did not understand all the fuss about Cinderella's waist. She said: "I don't understand what the concerns are actually."Lily does have a small waist, but then so do all the other girls in the film, all the girls in the film wear corsets because that's what you wear with period clothes - it creates the silhouettes."She added: "Lily's dress in particular is an optical illusion, I have to say."The diameter of the skirt is about two metres

and it has the width and that really does make the waist smaller than it actually is."The film's producer Allison Shearmur also stepped in to rebuff accu-sations it gave an unrealistic portrayal of a woman's body.PROMOTED STORIES

Car That’s Cheap to Run (SEAT on What Car) Recommended by The American said: "I'm a mum and I'm one of the producers of the film, and I think it's gotten a lot of attention."But the funny thing is, it's kind of paying attention to the opposite of the theme of the movie - which is your sense of beauty and your strength is what's

on the inside."Sandy is right, I was there for all the early

fittings - I would look like I had a two inch waist.

"There is a giant set of shoulders and butterflies and it was

customary for women to be corseted at the time.

"Not only is it an optical illusion but I think it is interesting that the conversation has been about the outside, because this is a movie where the real emphasis is on the inside."My 12-year-old daughter thought the dress was really pretty,

but what she took away from the film was

the priority of courage and kindness."

Cinderella, which is direct-ed by Sir Kenneth Branagh,

has already grossed more than 140 million US dollars at

the Box Office. And it is set to hit the big screen in

the UK later this month. It is the latest in a string of films which creates a live-action version of a classic cartoon fairytale. And it is not just Cinderella's appearance that has been causing a stir.Richard Madden, who plays Prince "Kit" Charming,

admitted he was a little coy at having to wear very tight trousers for the role.He said: "There is a certain degree of self-con-sciousness that you have got to get over."When you first pull the trousers on you want to have your back to the wall because you feel exposed."But the actor said he soon got over his embarrass-ment.He said: "Luckily all the guys were in the same boat together and so we all felt as silly as each other."And actually, once you get on set, those costumes madly feel really masculine and they fit in with these beautiful sets, you actually feel regal and it gives you a confidence."Sir Kenneth said he wanted to create a fairytale film that could be enjoyed by parents and chil-dren.And he revealed he got inspiration for the film from unlikely quarters - including Indian democra-cy campaigner Mahatma Gandhi. He said: "This is weird at a press conference but I'm about to quote Gandhi."It seems like a crazy thing to talk about in relation to Cinderella but I think it goes to the heart of the question."Gandhi said 'When I despair I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have al-ways won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they can seem invincible but in the end they always fall'."And in relation as to why perhaps someone like Cinderella doesn't do some of the things people may expect her to do, but does them in a different way, he may have some light to throw on it."

LILY JAMES REJECTS WAISTLINE CRITICISMS

Parents probably weren't as excited upon listen-ing to Disney's official announcement for the "Frozen 2" movie but their children most certainly cannot can't let all the excitement go ... and neither can the studio.Rumors for the sequel started last year when Idina Menzel, the voice behind the powerful Queen Elsa, said that production is working on some-thing, however, she retracted the statement, claiming that she had been misunderstood. Then Disney announced via Twitter last week that the hit animation is not stopping at the short film "Frozen Fever," and fans, both young and young-at-heart celebrated. There is not much that we know about "Frozen 2" however more details will probably surface as the release date nears, but as noted by Cross Map, here are the things that we do know so far:1) The main cast confirmed that they will be re-prising their roles for the film, including Josh Gad (who played the snowman, Olaf ) and Kristen Bell (who played Anna), who both took to Twitter to share their excitement for the sequel.2) The film will be released in 2018, because de-spite demands production may not be in a hurry.

Disney CEO Robert Iger said, "We're not demand-ing speed, we're demanding excellence."

3) Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck will still be directing the film, con-

sidering that they are be-hind the big success of

the film, and Disney is looking forward

to replicating the success that they had on the first film.4) The sequel is still going to take

place in Arendelle. Disney's Chief

Creative Officer John Lasseter said, "We en-

joyed making 'Frozen Fe-ver' so much and being back

in that world with those characters. Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up

with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hear-ing a lot more about it and we're taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that."There were also several theories that swirled around the film. The International Business Times noted some fan theories suggesting that Queen Elsa will be battling it out with an Evil Ice Queen with whom she shares similar powers.Another theory indicated that because Anna and Kristoff's love story was in the first film, it's Elsa's time to find love and romance with many hoping that she will be falling for Jack Frost. However with Jack in a Dream Works film (Rise of the Guardians) it's not going to be the same Jack Frost that fans fell in love with in 2012.

I work in a pub, my family have grown up around pubs and we have learned the value of a great, well run pub in the community. If you are ever in Moira, call into the Four Trees and say hello. The local pub is changing, have you noticed ? Pubs have been diversifying for hundreds of years, Traditionally the coaching inns were a hotbed of activity for travelling salespeople, meeting places for diverse political groups and local fairs. Today creative pub owners are hosting festivals, book clubs, craft fairs, community activities and even yoga in their pub. The more a pub gives to the community, the more it is likely to get back. However, without locals and community support the pub becomes a stop off without a soul. People make pubs, not decoration or promotions, you will find the characters of life who will offer advice on almost anything. Our Sam, Big Jim, Wee Hugh or Old Tony will often nod or smile when you enter the pub, now that’s not just a welcome, its your queue to engage with them, say

hello, introduce yourself and ask how they are. From here you never know it may just lead to your next holiday, job, friendship, partner or a recommendation of what to do. Also in the pub will be Dee, Jonty, Chris, Katie and Sharon, they will be as nice but need a different approach. You’ll be

able to spot them, they will have blue & orange coloured drinks often still in the bottle. Maybe not yet as worldly wise as the previous generation but never the less very proud of their local, because - it’s their local. If you show respect and be polite you will have it returned ten fold. It can be your local too. Please tell the bar person or waiter your name and ask theirs, after all they are people and it’s nice. Why don’t you ? Just switch off the TV some night, walk to the pub and become involved. It takes 21 years not to be a “blow in” so don’t worry, you are not alone, become a local in your local. Supermarkets don’t sell community spirit. Your pub needs you. Please drink responsibly, no one likes to forget the good times. Cheers Mr Thornleigh.

Today I will be talking about facial structure, highlight and contour. People often come to me only wanting one look and 80% of the time they show me celebrities like the Kardashian sisters. This look is designed and based for them person-ally therefore whenever you have the same look done you look in the mirror you think the next

Kardashian is staring back at you and it some-times doesn’t look the way you pictured and can lead to disappointment. The reason I’m saying this is because everyone is completely different and so will your make up be as well.

As a make up artist I try to incorporate all aspects of their face and bring to life certain areas they would never think of doing. Here is a few tips on how to achieve basic high-light and contour-To create a subtle everyday highlight try using a lighter illuminating concealer underneath the eyes, down the bridge of the nose, the top of the nose just below the forehead to brighten up the

eyes and to highlight the centre of face, blend with a clean brush or beauty blender with a foundation of your colour. For subtle contouring firstly with your index finger in a hook shape feel along the cheekbone to understand where the definition your cheek has. Whenever applying

your bronzer choose a colour darker than your natural skin tone and preferably brown tones and with an angled brush lightly blend the bronzer down the cheekbone stopping just before the apple of your cheeks. I always find using less product on the brush to start off with and then you can build up on how dramatic the look you are wanting to achieve. Thanks for reading, next time I will be talking about the difference between office make up and night out make up and how quick they both can be!

1. Hydration is extremely important for all runners, especially distance runners. On your longer training runs (6-20+ miles), drink something with electrolytes 30-45 minutes before you head out. (I usually drink 6-8 oz., and LOVE NUUN electrolyte tabs.) Then, be sure to drink while you run. DO NOT wait until you feel thirsty to drink. Your muscles are 80% water - so they need water to work! Don't worry if it feels uncomfortable to drink at first, you will get used to it. Just sip an ounce or so at a time. You dont' want to hear water sloshing around in your tummy - that's too much! There are many hand held bottles and hydration belt options to choose from, so pick one that's right for you (I like the Nathan brand). You need to keep practicing until it feels natural - DON'T wait until race day to figure out how to hydrate while you run. When you see other runners passing out from dehydration along the course, you'll be happy that you did!2. Wear the right shoes - NOT the pretty shoes - the RIGHT shoes. And, don't go into a store where the teenager says to you, "Well, I think that these are cool, try these on!" and buy a pair. Do your homework. You need to know your foot shape, your gait, and correct shoe size (I actually wear a 1/2 size up in my favorite shoe). Then, try on several pairs until you find one or two that fit well and feel good. Buy two pairs and alternate wearing them when you train. This allows time for the mid-sole and cushion to de-compress after a run. There are a lot of specialty running stores out there with experts who can help you. If you have access to one of these stores, I highly recommend starting there. You can read more about finding the perfect shoe here.3. On your longer runs (8+ miles) try using an energy supplement. Once you find one that is comfortable to consume, tastes great, and gives you the ener-gy you need, stick with it. I have a pretty sensitive

stomach, but found Honey Stinger Chews to be very easy to digest and they give me instant energy (plus, they're delicious!). DO NOT try different energy sources on race day unless you have used them and tried them before. You don't want to find yourself bent over with stomach cramps 2 miles from the finish line. I dropped one of my sacks of chews along the mar-athon course and was worried that I wouldn't have enough fuel to sustain me during the race. Toward the end of the course, volunteers were handing out GU, and I was tempted to try some, but followed my friend's advice and used only what I knew my body could handle. I'm really glad I did!4. Consider taking add-ing B-Vitamins to your daily diet. Running long distances for 3-4 months of training is a stress on the body. Even if you're eating and sleeping well, you still need extra nutrients. B-Vitamins are key. I take a B-Complex twice a day and also pop a sublin-gual B-12, such as Source Naturals MethylCobalamin, before I run and every mid-afternoon for a boost of energy. The B's will help keep you from feeling run down and give your immune system the support it needs to carry you through training. Be sure to drink plenty of water when you take your B's so the body can assimilate the nutrients!

5. Don't discount your short runs. It's easy to fall into the temptation to skip the 3, 4 and 5 milers, because they can't be as important as the long runs. Wrong. Every run counts, and every run helps keep you

mentally focused on the marathon goal. Some-times my short runs would almost feel more difficult than my long runs. Crazy! If I went out for a 4 miler and found myself struggling, I would change it into a tempo workout or walk a 1/4, jog a 1/4, build up to 80% for a 1/4 then repeat. Give yourself permission to walk - it's okay! Changing up the routine always helped me finish the run, and kept my confidence and focus strong. 6. For any run 12 miles or more, ice baths are a must. Yep, I said ICE baths!! The first time I tried to take one, I was skeptical, but complete-ly amazed at how it

reduced post-run soreness. There are probably many ways to do it, but I just fill the tub with cool, not cold, water. Sit in the water in your undies and a long sleeved shirt tied in the front. Pour 2-3 large pitchers of ice into the water, particularly over the thighs. Sit for 15-20 minutes. Sipping on hot tea and reading a running magazine helps take your focus off of the cold. Then, finish with a warm shower.

7. On you longer runs (15 + miles) if you find yourself really struggling to get through the last couple of miles because you feel tired, consider an alternative energy source such as peanut butter pretzels. Or, if after your long runs, you feel sick to your stomach, this may be a sign that you need to eat more to keep your blood-sugar levels steady throughout the run. I was amazed at how well this simple food kept me going. I packed some for the marathon and nibbled on them from mile 12 on. The combination of simple carbs, salt and protein worked like magic! But, again, practice using them on training runs first.8. Look at your training schedule, find your longest run and highlight it. That is your dress rehearsal run. Using this as a "practice" marathon will prepare not only your body, but your mind as well, for the big day. Wear your race day clothing and shoes, fix your hair the same, set up your playlist, and pack the same hydration and energy that you will use that day. I remember the day that I finished my 20 mile run, ev-erything went pretty smoothly and I literally jumped up in the air and shouted out a big fat "YES!" because I knew that the marathon was going to be possible. Proper practice is key.9. With #8 in mind..... DO NOT do anything new on race day. DO NOT go out and buy new shoes, no new clothing (unless it's an emergency), new fuel etc., etc. Stick to what you've used, stick to what you know works. Don't abandon the plan. My only exception would be if you forgot to pack something essential. I saw two different guys running in cut off jean shorts. Oooo, can you say chaffing??? Don't be that extreme! But, you get the picture.10. Glide. All over. Glide. If you don't know what it is, read more about it here. Use it on your long runs to prevent chaffing, and take it with you to use before the race (don't forget bra-lines, inner thighs, inner arms and chest).

LOOK BETTER FOR LONGER WITH PRETTY IN INK SEMI PERMANENT MAKE -UPInflammatory activity plays an essential role in our bodies healing and repair processes;

however, if this inflammatory activity is not properly controlled it can contribute to chronic illness. Conditions such as arthritis, autoimmune conditions and chronic skin conditions are all promoted by inflammation. The food that we eat can play a significant role in either promoting or reducing inflammation in our bodies; here are my top 5 anti-inflammatory foods.

Oily fishOily fish is probably the most powerful anti-inflammatory food as it is the best dietary source of the good omega-3 fats. These good fats are converted into anti-inflammatory messengers while also preventing the production of pro-inflammatory messengers in our bodies. Clinical trials have found that a regular intake of oily fish can have a beneficial impact on symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Try having oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, sardines and trout three times a week to see the benefits.

Ginger and TurmericNot only are ginger and turmeric essential for a great tasting curry or stir fry, they also have anti-inflammatory properties. The pigment that gives turmeric its yellow colour is called curcumin and it can reduce the activity of pro-inflammatory messengers. Ginger contains a substance called gingerols and these too are known to calm symptoms of inflammation including swelling and pain. Try using fresh ginger a few times a week in cooking and make a turmeric-rich curry once a week.

Extra Virgin Olive OilLong considered the secret of the healthy Mediterranean diet extra virgin olive oil is known to contain specific compounds that act as a natural anti-inflammatory. In fact the substance oleocanthol, which gives olive oil its peppery flavour was found to have pain relieving activity equal to ibuprofen and is also effective when applied to the skin. Dress vegetables or salads with raw extra virgin olive oil every day as you won’t experience the same benefits when you cook with it.

TomatoesThe humble tomato contains the pigment lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. In fact by cooking a tomato you increase its lycopene content so a roasted tomato or a slow cooked tomato sauce will provide more lycopene than a raw tomato so why not cook up a lovely Spaghetti Bolognese. Lycopene is known to play an important role in reducing prostate inflammation.

SunshineOk, so it’s not exactly a food and we don’t really have ready access to sunshine in Northern Ireland, however, the action of sunshine on our skin stimulates a chemical process in our body that results in the production of vitamin D. Vitamin D is more commonly associated with bone health but more recent research indicates that it has an important role in controlling inflammation and autoimmune activity. This may explain why many individuals with inflammatory conditions find they improve in the summer and get worse in the winter.

Ferrari’s Most Ambitious Car To Date LaFerrari The LaFerrari is very possibly the world’s fastest, most exciting hypercar. Which is some statement to make when there are machines such as the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder to contend with. The bottom line, however, is that LaFerrari has more power (a whopping 950bhp) and less weight to carry around than its prestigious rivals so figuratively, if nothing else, it quite clearly has the upper hand. Either way, this is the ultimate Ferrari, and it has but four ancestors; the 288 GTO, the F40, the F50 and the Enzo, each of these being a limited series car, just like LaFerrari, of which just 499 will be made during the next two years. At the centre of the car, behind its two fixed carbonfibre seats, sits a 6262cc naturally aspirated V12 engine that generates 790bhp at 9000rpm and 516lb ft of torque at 6750rpm. On their own these outputs would be sufficient to make LaFerrari more potent than the Scuderia’s last V12 F1 car, the 412T from 1995. But also behind and beneath the seats sits a 60kg lithium ion battery pack which, via a 25.7kg electric motor, provides a further 160bhp and 199lb ft to give combined outputs of 950bhp and 715lb ft. However, entirely unlike its rivals from Porsche and McLaren, the Ferrari’s power unit has been designed to produce its maximum outputs all of the time. There is no e-mode that can be engaged as such. Instead, the combustion

engine and the Hy-KERS system have been engineered to work as one, with energy being constantly harvested on the move (via the brakes, the ABS system, the traction control system and even

the E-Diff ) to deliver full beans, as in 950bhp, whenever you want it. The prodigious energy produced by this so-called power unit is then sent to the rear wheels, and the rear wheels only, via a seven-speed dual clutch auto gearbox, made for Ferrari by Getrag. This also has an electric motor attached to it, with a dedicated gear-set that transmits drive directly to the final drive, thereby reducing the need for a typically vast clutch. The meticulous removal of weight runs as a key theme throughout the supercar’s engineering, and this is but one

example. As with the P1 and 918, LaFerrari features a carbonfibre tub on to which the engine and suspension are mounted. At each corner there are double wishbones

(carbonfibre at the front) and coil springs with electronically controlled dampers, plus an enormous carbon-ceramic disc brake made by Brembo, those at the front measuring 398mm, those

at the rear 380mm. Electronics play a huge role in the car’s engineering, and in the delivery of its vast dynamic repertoire. Wings at the front and rear are actively deployed on the move to provide two radically different running configurations; high and low downforce modes. Mostly, these exist to provide the maximum amount of grip and reduced drag required at any given moment – with a maximum of 360kg being produced at 124mph when cornering, or a minimum of 90kg at 124mph when travelling in a dead straight line. On the move, the car decides how much downforce it needs, not you. Intriguingly, the active wings also play a key role in cooling the engine, the batteries, the gearbox and the carbon-ceramic brakes, too. The cabin of LaFerrari is a deeply exotic place in which to find yourself, as you’d expect, but it’s also smaller and more intimate than you might anticipate, despite there being 30mm more headroom than in an Enzo in

order to accommodate drivers wearing a crash helmet. And that’s because the driving position itself is so low slung, with a fixed seat but movable pedals and steering wheel. Ferrari claims the driving

position is half way between that of a normal sports car and a Formula 1 car, with the driver’s backside sitting at broadly the same height as their toes. Sit on the floor against a wall with your arms and legs out-stretched but slightly bent, holding on to an imaginary steering wheel, then shift your bum forwards so that your back is at an angle of 32 degrees to the wall and you’ll get a rough idea of how “single-seater” the driving position feels. And the rest of the cabin is very much in the same vein. You can’t unfortunately buy one though, because A) all 499 cars are now sold out and B) you might well have struggled to match Ferrari’s

strict critieria for ownership in the first place. If you wanted to buy a LaFerrari then you needed to have bought a minimum of two recent Ferraris via the dealer network from new, and have owned six in total in the last 10 years, and ideally never have speculated on any of them – or something along those lines. A more appropriate question then; is it better, worse or just different to a McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder? And is it a worthy successor to the mighty Enzo? LaFerrari is a more than worthy successor to the Enzo. Indeed, it makes the old-timer feel gruesomely under-achieving in most respects, and is also a much easier, far sweeter car to drive in the process. Does that make it a better hypercar than the McLaren and 918? That’s a question we aim to answer properly in months to come, but my hunch here and now is that it will be one heck of a dust-up. Between at least two of the world’s most exciting cars. And in the meantime, be in no doubt.

The new Passat wins the prestigious award, which is presented every year by the international “Car of the Year” jury. The winner was announced on the afternoon before the Geneva International Motor Show.“We are extremely proud of this accolade,” explained Prof. Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, at the prize-giving ceremony in Geneva. “In the new Passat, we have again succeeded in developing a car that sets the standards for its class in terms of technology and quality. This honour is a tremendous confirmation for the work of our engineers, designers and the entire team. The new Passat shows that the Volkswagen brand has the right answers to the challenges of our time.”Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for the Development Division, received the award

for the new Passat: “We are delighted by the honour of “Car of the Year 2015”. This accolade has a very special significance for us because it is awarded by independent

international trade journalists. In addition, the honour is known to have a high standing for our customers.”One of the oldest and most well-known awards in Europe, “Car of the Year” has been honouring the best new releases in the car industry every year since 1964. The jury, consisting of 58 European motoring journalists from 22 countries, had nominated seven candidates ahead of the final. In the preceding months, these candidates had undergone detailed testing, comparisons

and evaluations based on criteria such as economy, comfort, safety, driving characteristics, functionality, design and technical progress. In the 52nd edition of the traditional competition, the new Passat clearly triumphed over its six rivals in the final with a total score of 340 points. Two current Volkswagen models have already received the coveted award in the past, namely the Polo in 2010 and the Golf in 2013. In addition to the “Golden Steering Wheel 2014” and “Auto Trophy 2014”, the top position as

“Car of the Year” was preceded by several accolades at home and abroad. The new Passat, in all its versions, is one of the most successful mid-class cars in the world and with 1.1 million units (in 2014) one of the highest-volume series of the Volkswagen Group worldwide. Now in its eighth generation, the best-seller is regarded as one of the most innovative cars in its class. Thanks to advanced engineering methods, it was possible to introduce a significantly more dynamic design (including lower body, longer wheelbase, larger wheels). Despite the unaltered length in the interior dimensions, the new Passat has still expanded considerably. At the same time the latest technologies have been added: they include systems such as Active Info Display (a completely digital instrument cluster), extendable head-up display, and also systems such as an app-based Rear Seat Entertainment for tablets, Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring as well as three further global firsts: Emergency Assist (vehicle stops in emergency), Trailer Assist (assisted manoeuvring with a trailer) and Traffic Jam Assist. The new Passat is available with ten direct injection turbocharged petrol and diesel engines which cover a power range from 88 kW / 120 PS to 206 kW / 280 PS.

Garden Design, Build & Maintenance

I have some thoughts on How to Landscape and where to begin. When I watch landscaping shows on television I am always amazed at how easy it looks. You get a few friends together, dig up the grass, lay down some pavers, add a pergola or water feature. Voila! A ho-um yard becomes spectacular. The next thing you know, you’re off to the home improvement store buying supplies to create your own landscape sensation.Well, before you burn through your life savings, I want to share How to Landscape with a few Landscaping Lessons for Beginners thrown in for good measure. So, let’s get started creating the most beautiful yard on the block.Set a Realistic BudgetI have helped design landscapes for a few friends and when I ask about their budget I always get the glassy stare. Most people will give me a figure that is in the £200-£500 range. I usually tell them to let me know when they have something in the £800 – £1000 range. The reason ~ plants, mulch, rental equipment, hardscape material, etc. These things aren’t cheap and they add up fast. List Your Wants and NeedsNow that you have a budget, begin by making a list of things you want and need in your landscape. Think long and hard about how you will use the area? Do you have children that want a play area or trampoline? Do you have a large dog that needs space to run around? Do

you want to have a covered seating area? Are you dreaming of a large vegetable garden? Are there plans for one day adding a pool, outdoor kitchen, or fire pit? Don’t forget the paths. List all of these things.Remember this picture. It is our original drawing for the backyard landscape. We spent a lot of time thinking about what we wanted and how we would use it. What we’ve created is similar, but we had to have a place to start.Study the Elements One of the biggest mistakes beginning landscapers make is not paying attention to things like the sun, wind, and rain. Placing a patio on the sunny side of your house can be pure misery in August. You also don’t want to place your grill or fire pit next to a windy corner. That pretty patio umbrella can become a missile if it’s placed in the wrong spot. Before we started our backyard landscape we stood outside while it was raining and watched where the water drained ~ on a couple of occasions in

the middle of the night with flash lights.Don’t be in a hurry, either. Make a few plans, create some sketches, and then step back and study your yard with these things in mind. You may discover that one or two of your original ideas could be disastrous with the changing

seasons. Once you understand how your property interacts with the elements then you can plan accordingly.Start SmallI think I want to shout this one from the rooftops. Start small. Start small. Start small. Home improvement shows have huge crews with experts and that is why they can take a 1/4 acre lot and transform it into paradise in 30 minutes or less. It makes entertaining television, but it is unrealistic.Instead, find a small spot that you know you can improve. Maybe you want to add a pop of colour to your front yard. Create a bed around one or two trees, fill in with some annuals or grasses {that are appropriate for your area},

mulch, water, and enjoy. Usually, a small project like this can be done in one or two weekends and will not break the bank. Then, sit back and observe your new landscape. Small successes are always rewarding. And, they will give you the confidence and experience to tackle larger projects.I did this bed when I noticed an unused area next to the deck. We had the mulch and border on hand. I had a few plants that I moved and I bought the grasses. Starting small can net big results.Size and Scale MatterThis is one of the most common mistakes that landscaping newbies make. They underestimate or overestimate size and scale. This can happen with both plants and hardscapes. An oversized deck will swallow a small yard and look ridiculous. A large tree or shrub can overpower a landscape and make it dark and gloomy.Understand a Few of the Elements of DesignA great landscape will take into account several elements of good design. These include color, form, pattern, light, balance, contrast, rhythm, variety, and unity. Think outside the bedNot every plant has to be inside the boundaries of a bed. Plant both inside and outside of flower beds. I think this works best in natural landscapes or along paths. Use your imagination.....

LANDSCAPING FOR THE SUMMER

Glengormley High School’s Performing Arts Department present ‘Keeper’ and ‘Broken’ plays on human trafficking and poverty in the UK. Human rights are often dismissed as things that ‘other people’ need, usually people living in far-flung places. These plays will encourage us to look in our own back yards and see how core human rights, values such as dignity and worth, equality and respect are undermined in today’s Britain.Price: £3.50KEEPERHuman Trafficking is BIG BUSINESS which accounts for $150 billion of annual global profit. That’s more than tobacco, Google, Big Oil and even the U.S. banking system. There are more slaves in the world today than at any other point in human history, with an estimated 27 million in bondage across the globe. ‘Keeper’ is a chilling original tale that takes a look at one of the most secretive and hidden trades in the world. Penny and Emily are trapped under the power of ‘Keeper’, they share their stories and an unlikely friendship grows –Will they fight

for their lives? Will they fight for their lives?BROKEN Can you imagine what it would be like to go to bed hungry every night? To tell your child that there is no food left? To decide

between the fridge or the radiators? To live with the danger of losing your home and children? This is the reality for 1 in 4 children in the UK who are living in Poverty.‘Broken’ looks at the accounts of three women living in poverty and the impact it has on their own lives and those

they love. Trapped in the situations they find themselves in, Broken is the story of desperation and helplessness.*A percentage of the proceeds from this event will be donated to IJM and Save the Children to support victims of trafficking and those living in poverty.Show Time: 6.30pm. Due to the sensitive nature of this topic it is advised that it is not suitable for children under 12.Book Online at www.thecourtyardtheatre.com and collect your tickets on the night, have them posted or print at home!

Virtually every child loves playing on jungle gyms. The jungle gym has been a part of childhoods for generations because of its many benefits. Parents know that jungle gyms promote healthy development while creating opportunities for fun. Buying a jungle gym is an excellent way to provide kids an outlet for fun and exercise.

The History of Jungle GymsAlthough generations of children have grown up playing on jungle gyms, its roots date back to the year 1920. Inspired by his father's idea to teach kids three-dimensional mathematic principles using an outdoor climbing structure, Sebastian Hinton designed the first jungle gym for a school in Illinois. Although the original design was made from metal, modern versions can also be made using wood, rope, plastic, and other materials. Today, jungle gyms are found at parks, schools, and family backyards.

Why Parents Should Buy Their Kids a Jungle Gym

The idea of a jungle gym is simple, but the benefits are many. Kids learn physical, mental, emotional, and social skills. In addition, jungle gyms are easy to integrate into a family lifestyle. They can provide quality family fun without the family even having to leave the backyard.

1. Convenient ExerciseMost children do not get as much exercise as they should. Studies show that many parents are simply too busy to take their kids to the park to play. In result, many parents encourage their children to use the computer, TV, or video games because those activities can be done at home without supervision. In a day when childhood obesity is a growing issue, most parents want their children to have opportunities to be active but simply don't know how to incorporate physical activity into an already busy schedule. The jungle gym is the perfect solution for such a dilemma. Although parents should supervise their kids while they play on the jungle gym, it is extremely convenient to have a jungle gym in the backyard. Parents can get a lot of work done while observing kids through a door or window, or they can even work outside on some patio furniture.

2. ImaginationThe jungle gym requires children to engage in free play, a type of recreation in which children use imagination and creativity to direct their own fun. Kids of all

ages can adapt their experiences to satisfy their own imaginations. Children transform the jungle gym into whatever setting they choose, from a medieval castle to a futuristic spaceship. The possibilities are endless. This kind of play brings out kids' intrinsic storytelling and acting skills. Such skills are important to develop because they promote expression. Too many kids have creative scenarios spoon-fed to them through the media, but jungle gyms force kids to use their imaginations to have fun.

3. Sharing and CooperationChildren can play on jungle gyms alone, but the experience tends to be better when other people participate. When kids play with siblings and friends, they learn how to share, take turns, and cooperate. Each child has a complex imaginative scenario to offer, so the children have to combine ideas and compromise. Children eventually learn that they have more fun when everyone else is having fun, and it becomes less difficult to play together. This can be especially beneficial for siblings who do not always get along with each other. Older siblings in particular will learn how to involve their younger siblings in their games.

4. Bond with the KidsJungle gyms also allow children to

play with their parents in a new and exciting way. Kids love playing outside with their parents. Not only does this help the parents become more active, but it helps them spend quality time with their kids. It gives children more opportunities to talk to their parents, and it gives parents opportunities to teach their kids. The bonding that occurs while playing together outside will carry over into other aspects of family life as well. Playing on a jungle gym with parents will teach children the importance of children spending quality time with their parents. It will create a tradition that is likely to

endure for generations to come.

5. Appropriate for Every Age

Bigger kids love traditional jungle gyms, but parents worry that young children will not be able to safely participate on

a full-size jungle gym. That's why

some companies have designed jungle

gyms for smaller, younger kids. Small jungle gyms tend

to require less assembly, and they can even fit in yards that wouldn't necessarily fit a traditional jungle gym. Some jungle gyms are even designed for toddlers and might fit on an apartment balcony or patio. No matter how old or young a child is, jungle gyms are a great way to provide opportunities for fun and physical activity.

6. Improved Safety

Newer jungle gyms are a lot safer than previous designs. Many jungle gyms are made from materials like plastic that are less likely to cause injuries. While parents should always teach their kids how to safely use the jungle gym and should always supervise their children's outdoor play, parents can trust that jungle gyms are built to high standards of safety. One remaining concern is that children are prone to fall off of jungle gyms. To prevent major injuries, many parents put the jungle gym on top of a material that absorbs impact. Wood chips are especially good for something like this. Never put a jungle gym on top of a hard surface like concrete or asphalt.

7. Kids Conquer FearsJungle gyms inspire kids to be adventurous and to overcome fears. While many children have an innate sense of invincibility, other kids get quite scared by activities

like climbing. Kids who are initially afraid of using a jungle gym slowly become more willing to try more adventurous things on it. They can overcome a fear of heights and falling. Many kids miss out on fun activities because they are afraid of trying them. This often carries into adulthood. Parents who help their children become confident with jungle gyms often see that adventurous spirit continue to blossom.

8. Lasts a Long TimeWhen parents follow the proper maintenance schedule, jungle gyms can last a decade or longer. Thus, a jungle gym is really an investment. It can keep kids entertained over summer breaks and weekends for years to come. It is a quality improvement to any backyard, even if a family thinks that they might move before they get full use out of a jungle gym. No matter what hobbies and interests children develop, they will always enjoy the fun, exercise, and relaxation associated with jungle gyms. As kids grow up, they will share many great experiences with friends and family on their jungle gym.

ConclusionJungle gyms are known to promote excellent physical, mental, emotional, and social health. They have been popular for decades because of their timeless appeal to every kid's desire to learn, grow, create, imagine, pretend, and be active. With all of the benefits of jungle gyms, it is no wonder that so many parents choose to put one in their backyard. With a little bit of research, it's easy to find a great jungle gym and have it shipped directly to one's home.

Thunderdome Cafe & Bar has something for everyone. Good food, great selection of drinks, live entertainment and loads of offers to suit even the little ones.

As you walk in you are greeted and directed to your area of choice. We went through to the main restaurant hidden through the back. With its high ceilings and memorabilia, it’s a similar style to a hard rock cafe. Extremely clean and spacious with a 5 star hygiene

rating from the kitchen.

The staff are friendly and attentive. The menu has everything you would expect from a good grill and more. The more being their new addition to the menu, Stone Baked Pizzas. Always on 2 for 1, there’s even the option to take it home if you want!

The bar is extremely busy with a great Saturday afternoon buzz. Several big screens were showing a

variety of matchs in the sports bar and the atmosphere was fantastic!

We stopped off in McNeill’s after our meal for a quick drink. This is definately more intimate with a traditional “home from home” feel and the service and drinks on offer suits it perfectly.

“Great food, a genuinely fabulous atmosphere and something for everyone, the Thunderdome is well worth a visit!”

This month’s profile is of this season’s tops scorer so far, striker Randal Reid:Previous clubs - Ballymena United, Limavady United, Coagh United, Ballymoney United.Biggest influence on football career - Probably my brother as he was the one who got me kicking my first ball when I was a kid. Most difficult opponent - Gary Hamilton, played against him a few times when he was at Portadown. He was different class to be honest.Best player ever played with - Rory Hamill; some of the stuff he did in training was unbelievable. Most memorable Comrades game - The game we played against Ballymena this season in the League Cup. I scored my first Comrades goal in that gameFavourite other club - Chelsea.Favourite player - Eden Hazard.Favourite music - I listen to anything.Favourite TV show - Sons of Anarchy.Favourite film – Gladiator.Favourite holiday destination – Las Vegas. Best trainer at the club - Has to be Studdsy (Samuel McIlveen). He likes his sprints and sit-ups after training.Worst dressed at the club – He doesn't play for us anymore, but it had to be Denver Gage with his cowboy boots he would wear to training.

Managerial Change at ComradesWith Eddie Hill’s resignation from the manager’s job, after almost three and a half largely successful years in post, Comrades’ committee moved quickly to appoint a successor, with Hill’s assistant manager David Dorrian being the man selected to take over. 50 year old Carnmoney man Dorrian came in to join the management team earlier in the season, after Gary Bell resigned as assistant manager. This is his first job as a manager at this level, but he has a wealth of experience in the local game, having previously been manager of Ballymena United’s reserve team, as well as having roles in the management teams at Limavady United, Glenavon and Bangor. He was also previously at Dixon Park as a coach of the Colts side in the early part of the last decade. Forthcoming matchesComrades’ season finishes with three Championship 1 games in April, which hopefully will see them secure their place in Championship 1.Saturday 4th April – Carrick Rangers visit Dixon Park for a local

derby with significant meaning for both sides at different ends of the table. Comrades will hope to upset the form book with a win in this one against high-flying Carrick. Carrick won the reverse fixture 2-0 early in the season at Taylor’s AvenueSaturday 18th April – Comrades welcome visitors PSNI for what could be a relegation six-pointer, although the Red’s fans will hope they will have enough points on the board by this stage to be safe. Ex-Comrades manager and long-serving player Jamesie Kirk, now boss of the Police side has managed to turn their form round since the New Year and they will pose a difficult challenge. Comrades won the previous league game 4-0 at Newforge, but lost on penalties very early in the season in a Steel Cup match at the same venue.Saturday 25th April – The final game of the season sees Comrades travel to play promotion chasing Ards at the Bangor Fuels Arena. The sides drew 1-1 at Dixon Park earlier in the season. Denver Gage, who made the move from Comades to Ards in January, is likely to be lining up in this one for Niall Currie’s side.

Year 8 Pupils from Monkstown Community School received an early Christmas present when they got the chance to meet and train alongside new IBF Super-Bantamweight World Champion, Carl Frampton.

As part of his visit to the school, Carl delivered a coaching session along with the club’s coaches, before taking part in a question and answer session where they found out a little more about his training regime and the importance of hard work and dedication.

Carl also took time out of his busy schedule to visit pupils at Newtownabbey Education Guidance Centre. Young people from the school take part in the clubs Big Lottery funded ‘Kid Gloves’ programme each week and were delighted to get the chance to hold Carl’s new World Championship belt.

CARL FRAMPTON VISITS LOCAL AREASDecember saw the end of our Box Clever programme for 2014. The club currently has over 100 pupils attending on a weekly basis to complete homework and/ or worksheets. Former pupil and Commonwealth medallist Steven Ward presented certificates at school assembly to the top attenders in each year group.

With funding from the Big Lottery ‘Awards for All’ programme, the club started a positive mental health and well-being project in partnership with Threshold Housing. The project provides physical activity sessions to people who suffer from long term and chronic mental health problems and who currently live in supported housing through the Threshold Charity.Keep up the good work guys!!

THE TRUTH IS OUT THEREBy Stephen Clements

Welcome to my second outing on Chatterbox! I have a fantastic job, playing music, talking rubbish and getting to meet famous people! It’s still a thrill I have to say, when we get tweets from sporting legends such as Ulster Rugby players, or even Gillian Anderson (formerly of the X-Files!!) and more recently of The Fall, whilst we are on Citybeat Breakfast. The truth is out there!

But as I said before, when I’m not working, or spending quality time with my wife and kids, my next love is sport, and in particular football!

Last month I discussed the amount of money that is prevalent in the game with the news that the tv rights for the EPL had been sold to Sky and BT for a combined £5billion. Crazy stuff. Given the MASSIVE amounts of money at stake, the pressures on players, managers and especially clubs, the responsibility on referees increases exorbitantly. Never has this been more apparent than this month. Before I go on though.Congratulations to Ireland, on retaining the

RBS 6 nations championship, on arguably the most exciting single day of rugby in the history of the game!! Three teams tied going into the final day, with points difference eventually settling the matter, despite a gallant effort by both Wales and England!! Heart stopping stuff, and a fabulous advertisement for the game. There was not ONE single refereeing mistake made. In fact, several “almost” tries and “almost not” tries were disallowed and allowed respectively. Not a single mistake. The best team won, and nobody had any complaints. Are rugby referees super human? Do they have eyes on the back of their heads (like my mum used to!!)?No. They have help. In the form of this amazing invention called “video technology”. In case you haven’t heard of it, it’s where the game is recorded and someone is watching on a tv and then tells the ref, IF he asks for their help, what ACTUALLY has happened. I know. It really is futuristic stuff.Except that it’s not. It’s here and now and it’s very simple to do. When it was first suggested as a way of helping in the game of rugby, many purists suggested it would ruin the game. That it would take rugby down the slippery slope toward American football and it would be very stop start. I think even those doubters would agree that this has not happened, and indeed it’s widely regarded

as having ADDED to the excitement. You can almost hear a pin drop at times in a stadium of 80,000+ people as they await the result of the video evidence!Meanwhile back in the English Premier League, the richest football league in the world, for the third time in less than 2 seasons the referee has made a mistake. Of EMBARRASSING proportions. He has sent someone off wrongly. This is not as in, “that was a harsh red, he could’ve shown a yellow”, I mean WRONGLY. As in the WRONG man.West Brom’s Gareth McAuley shown the red card after 90 seconds, even though it was his team mate Craig Dawson who committed the foul. Earlier this season, Wes Brown was sent off for John O’Shea’s foul at Old Trafford, and last year, Andre Marriner famously mixed up Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kieran Gibbs after a handball on the goallineThe referees are under enormous pressure as it is. Every decision they make is scrutinised but getting players mixed up surely is a sign that these guys NEED HELP! Referees are only human (even though I am as, (ok…I am probably more) guilty of shouting abuse at the tv when they get it wrong, for the majority of the time they do a good job. If you’ve ever been to a premier league match, you’ll appreciate the speed at which the game is played. Listen, they do alright in my books. But sending the wrong man to the changing room is a MASSIVE error, and one that is almost unforgiveable. Twice this season it has happened and to teams that will be struggling to stay in the wealthiest league in the world. IF the games are so important, which they undoubtedly are, shouldn’t there be some sort of help? Already we’ve had the introduction of goal line technology, so why not video refereeing akin to rugby? The football purists argue that it would ruin “the beautiful game”It hasn’t ruined rugby. Or tennis. Or cricket. In fact, as I alluded to earlier, it has arguably ADDED to those games as spectator sports. The pressure on referees to get everything right is mounting. And I think in the last couple of seasons it has started to show. Although as I have already said, I am as guilty as any fan of venting at the ref, I do believe the buck stops with the powers that be. It is they who should be on the end of “you don’t know what you’re doing” chants! When the stakes are as high as they are, and the technology is there, let’s use itThe truth is out there!

Fourteen communities across the United Kingdom, have been selected to receive three years of funding to increase community participation and improve wellbeing as part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games legacy. Fourteen is a £3.5m programme funded by Spirit of 2012, a charity set up by the Big Lottery Fund to connect events to communities across the country; tackling disadvantage by supporting opportunities in sport, physical activity, culture and the arts, volunteering and social action. As Fourteen is a community led initiative, each community will decide themselves how they want to increase participation in one or more of the following activities: social action & volunteering; grass roots sport & physical activity; culture activity & arts; and youth leadership & personal development. All activities will be inclusive and aimed at supporting local people in developing their potential and feeling able to actively contribute to their community. Alongside Monkstown, the Old Library Trust, Creggan (Londonderry) and Monkstown Boxing Club are the two Northern Ireland community partners selected by Springboard Opportunities in partnership with Strive NI CIC. Both communities will be supported by the delivery partners to develop and achieve a 3 year plan which will increase community participation in ways that meet local needs, aspirations or shortfall in their areas. Activities will be determined by the communities and will be in Spirit of 2012 focus sectors of sport, arts & culture, volunteering and/or youth leadership and development. Debbie Lye, Chief Executive of Spirit of 2012, said: “Spirit was established to extend the opportunities and inspiration of events, such as London 2012, to communities across the UK. Our investment into Glasgow 2014 and its UK-wide legacy was our first big commitment. Fourteen represents the lion’s share of that. The communities announced today are direct grassroots beneficiaries of the Glasgow 2014 legacy. They have put forward what changes they want to see in their neighbourhoods, and have a vision of the difference this money will make. Led by local people to impact local people

- we’re hugely excited to get fourteen underway.” Billy Snoddy, Chair of Monkstown Boxing Club commented: “Monkstown Boxing Club, are delighted to be part of the delivery of the Spirit of 2012 Fourteen programme in Northern Ireland. This unique programme, which spans across communities in Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland over the next 3 years, will not only keep the legacy of the Commonwealth Games alive but will encourage the two selected Northern

Ireland communities to embrace the legacy values of

participation.”

FAIR CHANCE PROJECT5th November saw the start of

our second Fair Chance project in

partnership with the Colin Glen Trust and Co-

operation Ireland. The programme works with young people between the ages of 15 and 18yrs, on areas such as personal development, employability and good relations, offering accredited qualifications along with team building and youth leadership activities. To date, local young people have completed an OCN qualification in Good Relations as well as taking part in a cultural visit to Dublin and an activity filled weekend residential to Annalong. The programme runs each Wednesday night from 7pm and is hosted in each community, alternating weekly.

‘Positive Futures’ Youth Programme

Our Newtownabbey BC supported ‘Positive Futures’ project took part in a 2 week

DJ workshop in November, facilitated

by Cool FM DJ Mairead Campbell. The budding DJ’s had

the opportunity to design and broadcast their own radio show, playing their own genre of music as well as taking part in debates and discussions around local and personal issues that have affected them.

‘Inaugural Marathon at Monkstown’The 26th November 2014 saw the club host the first ever marathon in Monkstown. The boxing club was used to host the 28 runners from as far a field as Dublin and provided changing facilities and refreshments before and after they completed their gruelling 26.2 miles. Well done to all!!
