What is a chat show?• A talk show (American and Australian English) or chat

show (British) is a television or radio program where one person (or group of people) will discuss various topics put forth by a talk show host. Ricky Lake

• Sometimes, talk shows feature a panel of guests, usually consisting of a group of people who are learned or who have great experience in relation to whatever issue is being discussed on the show for that episode. Oprah Winfrey

• Other times, a single guest discusses their work or area of expertise with a host or co-hosts. Piers Morgan

Task 1 (a)• Research task – You will begin your research

by viewing at least 4 examples of the chat show form. (TIP- try to include a range of US/UK based shows and current/ past shows).

• Your viewing notes will need to identify and compare the similarities and differences in the codes and conventions used in each show.

Page 8: Chat show intro ppt

Green Room

• Is there a room where the guests go to wait?

• Can we see the guests in this room? What are they doing?

Page 9: Chat show intro ppt

Hosts

• Who is hosting the chat show?

• Gender?

• Are they celebrities as well as chat show hosts and if so what are they famous for? Films...etc)

Page 12: Chat show intro ppt

Audience

• Live public audiences?

• Do the audiences take part in the chat show?

• Describe the demographics of the audience – age, gender, class, etc.

Page 13: Chat show intro ppt

Music/audio

• Describe the music/audio during the chat show.

• Does the music vary for each guest? How and why?

• Is there a visible band?

Page 14: Chat show intro ppt

Props

• What props are used? Eg sofa/chairs etc.

Page 15: Chat show intro ppt

Quirk or point of interest• Is there something ‘quirky’ that is used during

the chat show?/ Does the chat show have a unique aspect that other chat shows do not?

• For example: Jonathan Ross has 4 poofs and a piano – they wear a face of each guest on their t-shirt and they have an intro song for each guest.

Page 16: Chat show intro ppt

Studio Layout

• Formal/Informal?

• What else can you see in the studio? For example sliding doors, big screens showing audience and guest what’s going on in the green room.

Page 17: Chat show intro ppt

Topics

Page 18: Chat show intro ppt

• What is the style of the chat show? Comedy, quite rude, sexual innuendo etc.

Page 19: Chat show intro ppt

• How is it structured? For example are there breaks, how long is each guest interviewed, is there a consistent ending for the chat show.

Page 20: Chat show intro ppt

Task 1 (a)

• You can write your viewing notes using the comparison grid (Student Drive) but must be completed neatly and detailed.

• Or in the form of the Task 1a exemplar form also in the Student Drive.

• Keep a record of any websites, clips etc that you use for Task 1 (d)

Page 23: Chat show intro ppt

Task 1 (b)• Research techniques – develop your research

into the four shows that you have chosen by finding, reading, highlighting and annotating secondary research – you will need to include at least two online articles and two print-based articles.

• From your findings establish 5 questions you would like to seek feedback from your audience on Task 1 (b) Vox pops doc on S Drive

• Conduct this primary research by filming ‘vox pops’ – Tuesday 18th May, period 1.

• Is there an ailment at least one Loose Woman hasn’t suffered and is willing to share with the public?

• Never, in the history of television, have so few women experienced so much in such a short time.

• Betrayal, addictions, disease, divorce, debt, toyboys and cosmetic surgery. That’s just for starters. The all-female panellists on ITV’s daytime show don’t just come with baggage, they’ve got crates of it stacked up in containers.

• Lorryloads of sorrow, heartache, misery – and smatterings of joy.

• Once labelled the “Tupperware party” of British television, it’s the show critics love to hate, which is strange because it defies the convention that modern television is ageist – several loose ladies admit they’ll never see 50 again.

• And, in the nicest possible way, it’s no beauty contest.

• It doesn’t need to be.
