Summer Block Club Events!

Claire Sturtevant of Falleson Block club, reported that the Rock the Block Party held on August 26th was a great success! Also, John Stevens of Cherry Street, held a Front Yard Barbecue. He offered hot dogs and a bottle of water and about 10 people stopped by! He was surprised when he met a new neighbor that he didn’t know.

Thanks Claire and John for leading the way!

Update: New York State Assembly

Joe Morelle

Update: New York State Senate Joe Robach

Enhancing Workforce Development to Improve Opportunities for More New Yorkers

D eveloping a skilled workforce and training people for high-demand jobs benefits us all; workers, employers

and our economy as a whole. Most importantly, it benefits families and communities.

During the 2017 Legislative Session, I was pleased to support a package of bills aimed at boosting the state economy by training job seekers and existing employees for the employment opportunities that are in demand.

Specifically, the legislation includes measures that will: Encourage statewide participation in apprenticeships; Give job opportunities to those who served our country; Make information about New York State work programs more accessible;

Establish the “Retrain and Employ Unemployed Persons Program”;

Invest in our children’s immediate future; and

Attract talented educators who prepare the next generation.

In addition to the Senate-approved bills, I also helped to successfully deliver significant funding for job training and workforce development initiatives in this year’s State Budget to help enhance New Yorkers’ job skills -- creating pathway to new opportunities, financial security and successful careers. Overall, this year's budget includes over $260 million in Legislative Workforce Development and other labor-related initiatives. I am working to ensure that New Yorkers have access to effective job training services that can help them succeed in our rapidly changing economy. By collaborating with labor, education and business, I am confident we can develop initiatives that will continue growing our economy and provide greater opportunities for workers and employers.

A ssemblyman Morelle’s daughter, Lauren, passed

away on August 30th after fighting an 18 month

battle with breast cancer. She was 31 years old.

The Charlotte Community would like to express its deepest condolences to Lauren’s family, husband Nate Stone, her children Arabella and Jonas, and her parents, Joe and Mary Beth Morelle.

October National Breast Cancer Awareness Month *

Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.

The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.

If you are a woman age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.

If you are a woman age 50 to 74, be sure to get a mammogram every 2 years. You may also choose to get them more often.

Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours had breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.

Update: Molly Clifford

Northwest City Council Member Getting It Right on Parcel 5

I appreciate this ongoing opportunity to provide a few updates on projects of interest for Charlotte

residents. First, it was great to be able to join Senator Joe Robach and other City officials to finally cut the ribbon on the new concession stand (and restrooms!) at the CYAA ballfields! Special thanks to Jim Farr and the teams from the Departments of Recreation and Youth Services and Environmental Services who put the funding together to get this project done. It will be a much more friendly and comfortable place for families to watch and play baseball! Funding for the Alpha Street Group street project

has been approved, with construction slated to start in the spring. This project will widen Alpha Street and Wilder Terrace, and replace curbs and catch basins, upgrade street lighting and other related activities on those streets as well as on Meriden and Braddock. There will be at least one more public meeting before the project starts – if you have any questions in the meantime, please contact my office at [email protected] or 428-5982.

Council also approved funding for Phase 1 of the Eastman Trail, which will eventually connect the Genesee Riverway Trail to the Canal trail along 390. This funding is for Phase 1, which will begin the spur from the Canal trail to Mt. Read Blvd. When it’s completed, this will open up many more options for people who love to walk and bike our trail system! Finally, if you haven’t seen the new marquee and other exterior improvements to the old Building 28 on W. Ridge Rd. at Eastman Business Park (formerly Kodak Park), check it out! It looks great and there are exciting plans to continue to develop and promote the “Kodak Center,” as it is now called, for performances and exhibits.
