• They Erupt Ash And Magma As They Erupt• They Are Boiling Hot So You Can't Go Near Them• The Magma That Erupts From The Volcanoes Slowly Turn

Black• The Smallest Volcano Is In The USA• The Biggest Volcano Is In The USA• Volcanoes Can Get Up To 1200 Degrees• A volcano erupts when pressure on the magma chamber

causes the magma to rise and come out together with gas, rocks and ashes.

• Some of Earth's volcanoes actually erupt within about few days or hours of other volcanoes. Upon closer inspection, however, the eruptions are almost always preceded by very different periods in terms of time and some types of activity

• The oldest known present volcano is Etna, about millions of years old.

• Lava can flow quite slowly or erupt quite violently into the air. The rocks blown out of a volcano – called pyroclastic rocks – fall back to earth as dust, ash, cinder.

• * Crater Lake in Oregon was formed from a high volcano that lost its top after a series of tremendous explosions about 6,600 years ago.

• * Mount Vesuvius, in Italy, has erupted several times. The most devastating of the eruptions occurred in A.D. 79, destroying the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

How Do They Occur Floods are not alike. Some develop slowly,

sometimes over a period of days. But flash floods can develop quite quickly, sometimes in just a few minutes and without any visible signs of rain.

Facts A national weather forecast on the

morning of Thursday 26 January 1984 predicted heavy rain in Southland and Fiordland

• .• Myths And Legends• Māori legend includes a story of a great flood. Tāwhaki, god of thunder

and lightning, was almost murdered by his brothers-in-law. When he had recovered, Tāwhaki took his warriors and their families, and built a fortified village on top of a mountain. Then he called to his ancestors – the gods – for revenge, and they let the floods of heaven descend. The earth was overwhelmed by the waters and the entire population perished. This was known as Te hurihanga i Mataaho (the overwhelming of Mataaho – one of the places that were destroyed).

• The wife of a very good man saw a very big fish. She called her husband, but he couldn't see it until he hid behind a banana tree and peeked through its leaves. When he finally saw it, he was horribly afraid and forbade his wife, son, and two daughters to catch and eat the fish. But other people caught the fish and, heedless of the man's warning, ate it. When the good man saw that, he hastily drove a pair of all kinds of animals into trees and climbed into a coconut tree with his family. As soon as the wicked men ate the fish, water violently burst from the ground and drowned everyone on it. As soon as the water reached the treetops, it sank rapidly, and the good man and his family came down and laid out new plantations

• During the Dreamtime flood, woramba, the Ark Gumana carrying Noah, Aborigines, and animals, drifted south and came to rest in the flood plain of Djilinbadu (about 70 km south of Noonkanbah Station, just south of the Barbwire Range and east of the Worral Range), where it can still be seen today. The white man's claim that it landed in the Middle East was a lie to keep Aborigines in subservience

• A medicine man named Sommay had two sons, Tamendonare and Ariconte. Tamendonare tilled the ground and was a good husband and father. Ariconte was interested only in war. One day he returned from battle with the arm of a slain foe and accused his brother of cowardice. Tamendonare sarcastically asked why he didn't bring the whole carcass. Ariconte threw the arm at his brother's door, and at that moment, their village was transported to the sky, leaving the two brothers on earth. Tamendonare stamped on the ground so hard that a fountain of water sprang forth into the sky; the water continued until the whole world was covered. The brothers fled to the highest mountains and climbed trees. Tamendonare climbed a pindona tree, helping one of his wives up with him, and Ariconte climbed a geniper tree with his wife. All other people drowned. Ariconte's wife dropped fruit and heard from the splash when the water was still too high for them to climb down. Two different peoples, who are perpetually feuding, are descended from these two couples. The Tupinambo exalt themselves over the Tominu by claiming descent from Tamendonare
