    LANSING Unsea-

    sonably warmweather may have

    Michigans blackbears and recently

    born cubs out roam-

    ing earlier than usual.Great-horned owl

chicks are alreadyhatched and will be

out of the nest beforelong. Spring is the sea-

    son for wildlife to give

birth. The Depart-ment of Natural Re-

    sources remindsMichigan residents to

resist the instinct totry to help baby ani-

    mals that may appear

to be abandoned be-cause in nearly every

case a parent isnearby and the baby

    animal is not aban-doned.

    The truth is, the

animal doesnt needhelp - for example,

even if a fawn appearsto be abandoned, its

mother is almost al-ways nearby, said

    DNR wildlife ecologist

    Sherry MacKinnon.

We appreciate thegood intentions ofthose who want to

    help, but the animals

are better off leftalone than removed

    from the wild.MacKinnon said its

not uncommon fordoes to leave their

    young unattended for

up to eight hours at atime; an anti-predator

    strategy that mini-mizes scent left

    around the newbornanimals. The same

    holds true for rabbits,

    ground-dwelling birdsand other wildlife,

she said. Even avianparents will continue

to care for hatchlingsthat have fallen from a

    nest.

    The DNR advisesthat:

    * Many baby ani-mals will die if re-

    moved from theirnatural environment,

    and some have dis-

    eases or parasites that

can be passed on tohumans or pets.

    * Some rescuedanimals that do sur-

    vive become habitu-

ated to people and areunable to revert back

to life in the wild. It isillegal to possess a

wild deer or any otherwild animals in Michi-

    gan, and every day a

deer spends with hu-mans makes it that

much less likely to beable to survive in the

    wild.* Eventually, habitu-

    ated animals pose ad-

ditional problems asthey mature and de-

    velop adult animal be-haviors. Habituated

    deer, especially bucks,can become aggres-

    sive as they mature,

and raccoons are well-known for this, too.

If you come acrossa deer or other animal

that you are certainhas been orphaned

early in the year - for

    example, if a doe is

dead nearby - pleasecall your local DNR of-fice. They can refer

    you to a licensed reha-

    bilitator, said MacK-innon. Licensed

    rehabilitators aretrained to handle wild

animals and knowhow to release them so

    that they can survive

    in the wild. Michiganlicensed rehabilitators

are also listed on theDNR website at

    http://www.michi-gandnr.com/dlr/.

    partment of NaturalResources is commit-

    ted to the conserva-tion, protection,

    states natural and

    cultural resources forcurrent and future

    generations. For moreinformation, go to

Question & Answers AboutSelling Real Estate

    For some people, owning a

home is an integral part ofachieving the American Dream.

But for others, and perhaps agrowing number of people, home

ownership is not in the cards.

And oftentimes, that is a calcu-lated choice people make. The re-

ality today is that some peoplesimply prefer to rent a home in-

stead of own one. Of course, thereare upsides to both renting and

    owning.

    Owning a home: Pros

The home is yours. Want to

change the paint color? Go ahead.Refinish the floors? You can do

that, too. Build equity as you

    make monthly mortgage pay-

    ments? Check. People who own

    their condo, loft or single-family

home have flexibility to make the

    changes they want, provided they

are not outside the bounds of city

ordinances (in the case of single-

    family homes) or association co-

op rules (in the case of condosand lofts).

    And in some markets, including

    Minneapolis, owning a home ac-

    tually makes more economic

sense. According to a recent Wall

Street Journal survey, 12 of 27

metro areas favor owning a home

rather than renting one. In Min-

    neapolis, for example, the average

    monthly mortgage payment for

    homeowners is $776, compared to

    the average monthly rent pay-

    ment of $953.

    Homeowners also enjoy a sense

of security. They are not subject

to landlords who do not want to

extend a lease, or who are not

    prompt in dealing with issues

    that arise. Additionally, home-

    owners essentially invest in them-

selves each time they make a

mortgage payment or complete ahome-improvement project.

    Renting a home: Pros

You are not the owner. That

    means your landlord, not you,

likely is responsible for major re-

pairs. Furnace goes out? Call the

landlord. Ditto if, for example, the

roof develops a leak. For that rea-

son, people who rent can take

    comfort in knowing exactly how

much of their money goes into

their home each month or year.

    Renters also enjoy flexibility.

    Since leases generally last for

fixed periods of time, renters can

live in one spot for a year or two,

and then try somewhere else. Or

maybe you have a job that keeps

you on the move. In that case,

renting is a good choice because

you are not on the hook for selling

a home before you can move.

Renting also tends to be less

    labor-intensive than owning.

    Renters often can decorate a

home to line up with their per-

sonal tastes, but they generally do

not need to worry about things

    like landscaping, mowing the

grass in the summer, or removing

snow in the winter. As a result,

renters have more time for the ac-

    tivities they enjoy.
