Rugged regionalawaitsCharlevoixBy Andy Sneddon

CHARLEVOIX – It isn’t how

you start, but how you finish.

The Charlevoix High School

girls basketball team proved that

axiom last week when it knocked

off Elk Rapids, 66-61, in a Class C

district championship game.

It was Charlevoix’s first dis-

trict title since 2006 and the Ray-

ders advanced to the regional at

Sanford Meridian where it was

scheduled to play McBain, 19-2,

in a semifinal game on Tuesday.

Beaverton and Lincoln Alcona

comprise the other half of the re-

gional bracket. The champi-

onship game is set for Thursday.

The Rayders, 13-9, lost their

two regular-season meetings to

the Elks, 52-41 and 66-49.

But Friday’s game was a differ-

ent story as Charlevoix’s full-

court pressure negated a decided

Elk Rapids size advantage.

“I felt like we have gotten bet-

ter all year,” second-year

Charlevoix coach Liz Shaw said.

“The press really relies on all five

teammates working together, and

I think the more they understood

that the better they got through-

out the season.

“It’s a tribute to the girls work-

ing hard all season and never set-

tling for mediocrity. They always

wanted to strive to get better and

better.”

Madeline Boss scored 18 points

and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead

Charlevoix, While Gabby Gray

added 12 points and nine assists,

and Kourtney Putman finished

with 11 points and seven re-

bounds.

Charlevoix jumped out to an

early 17-4 lead, but by halftime,

was up just one, 28-27. Elk Rapids

seized a slim lead early in the

third quarter, but the Rayders

managed to maintain their com-

posure and then snuff out the

Elks, who finished 14-8.

“We just did a great job on de-

fense in the backcourt,” Shaw

said. “I felt like if (Elk Rapids)

got the ball in the block, they’d

score. Our game plan was to em-

phasize the press and not let the

ball get down in the block.

“We had tremendous ball pres-

sure and I think our press really

got to them after a while and

caused a lot of turnovers.”

The Rayders also got eight

points apiece from Ellie Way and

Olivia Storm, and seven from

Alexis Tribfelner. Kelsey En-

gstrom led the defensive charge

with three steals.

Putman and Storm came off

the bench to give the Rayders a

spark in the second half, Shaw

said.

“They did a great job,” she

said. “I think together they had

15 points in the second half.

Those are big numbers when

you’re coming off the bench.”

Bridget Hintz scored 23 points

and Rachel Hintz added 20 for the

Elks.

“I’m just really honored to even

be (at the regional),” Shaw said.

“It’s a great step for our program

and it’s someplace we want to

strive to get to every year.

“That’s how programs are built

and state championships are

won. That’s where my vision is

as a program, to keep getting to

that next level, to keep taking

steps.”

elk Rapids 61, Boyne City 47

CHARLEVOIX — It was a tall

task for the Lady Ramblers, and

by tall, the Lady Elks start a pair

of 6-foot sisters in the form of

Bridget and Rachel Hintz and the

duo did a majority of the damage

against Boyne City as they com-

bined for 43 points in leading Elk

Rapids to a 61-47 Class C district

win on February 24.

With the loss, Boyne closes out

a 7-14 campaign.

“We got off to a slow start, we

had good looks but got down

early,” Boyne City coach Kevin

Fitzpatrick said. “The girls never

quit, we beat them in the second

half, but never had an answer for

Bridget or any of their bigs.”

The Elks used a 15-4 opening

quarter to set the tone and added

to it in the second to open up a

35-18 lead going into the break.

Boyne City would outscore the

Elks 29-26 over the final 16 min-

utes but it came a little late.

“They (Elk Rapids) did a much

better job against our pressure

this time, and when did create

opportunities, we missed shots

that we normally make that

would have kept the game close,”

Fitzpatrick added.

Rainy McCune would finish

with a team-high 22 points, while

Mallory Karaszewski added nine

for the Ramblers.

CHARLEVOIX — The

Charlevoix Lady Rayders contin-

ued to play strong basketball as

they were able to cool off a “hot”

shooting East Jordan Red Devils

team 63-49 on February 26 in ad-

vancing to the Class C district

final.

Gabby Gray led the Rayders

three Rayders in double figures

with 17 points, while Madeline

Boss added 14 and Olivia Storm

had 11.

“Charlevoix played very in-

tense and played really good de-

fense,” East Jordan coach Steve

Hines said. “We turned it over

too many times but they had a lot

to do with that.”

The Rayders led at the quarter

breaks 16-9, 33-16 and 48-31.

Paige Poindexter led the Red

Devils (9-13) with 13 points and

five rebounds, while Miranda

Burks added 12 and Lindsay

Schroeder finished with 10

points and nine boards.

“We beat them in the second

half, but that halftime deficit was

just too much to overcome,”

Hines added.

east Jordan 70, Mancelona 46

CHARLEVOIX — Tori

Goodrich found her mark early

and often for the Lady Red Devils

as she led East Jordan with 27

points, six rebounds and four as-

sists to a Class C district quarter-

final victory over Mancelona on

February 24 at the Charlevoix

High School gym.

Goodrich, a senior, nailed nine

triples in the contest, setting a

new East Jordan school record in

the process.

“She was on fire,” Red Devil

coach Steve Hines said. “She not

only shot the ball well, she

played a complete game, re-

bounding and distributing the

ball.”

East Jordan led at the quarter

breaks 15-7, 36-13, and 59-29.

Paige Poindexter chipped in

with 17 points and six rebounds

and Lindsay Schroeder added 12

points and seven boards for the

Red Devils, which improved to 9-

12 overall on the season.

“It was certainly a nice way to

start the tournament,” Hines

noted. “A good sound all-around

game.”

The Lady Ironmen were led by

Eileene Naniseni with 16 points

and Tyra Oetting added 10

points.

Boyne (ranked No. 2 in Class C) got a career-

high 19 points from Maceo Vroman and 12 from

Cole Butler as the Ramblers downed No. 5 Class D

ranked Cedarville in convincing fashion, 60-37 on

February 27.

“Really happy with how the guys responded

after the loss on Tuesday,” Rambler coach Nick

Redman said. “Nice to see them play loose and

with enthusiasm. We did an outstanding job de-

fensively to hold Cedarville to 37 points.”

The Ramblers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead,

and before the Trojans knew it, Boyne was up 11-2

and finished the quarter ahead 20-8 thanks to But-

ler, who scored all 12 of his points in the opening

eight minutes.

Boyne kept up the strong defensive effort,

which turned into good looks on the offensive end

in the second as they built their lead to 35-19 at

halftime and carried a 45-30 cushion into the

fourth quarter.

Ryan Carson would add nine points, and Corey

Redman finished with nine boards and four as-

sists.

Petoskey 41, Boyne City 33

PETOSKEY — Boyne City saw their quest for a

perfect regular season come to an end as the

Petoskey Northmen edged the Ramblers 41-33 on

February 25.

In a game that usually helps both teams pre-

pare for a strong tournament run, the Ramblers

got exactly what they needed.

“Not disappointed about the loss just in the fact

that we didn’t execute well. Unforced turnovers

hurt us,” Boyne City coach Nick Redman said.

“They did a good job posting up on our guards

late in the game. Good end of season game for us

to learn from and help us get better.”

Petoskey would take advantage of the Rambler

miscues as they built a 12-2 opening quarter lead.

However, the Ramblers would put together a

much better second quarter and would finally

take the lead 21-20 on a Cole Butler triple from the

Ramblers close regular season 18-1 with win over Trojans

left wing at the buzzer.

In the third, neither teams could get

much offense going, but Petoskey man-

aged just a little more as they carried a

28-25 edge into the final eight minutes of

play.

The fourth quarter didn’t fare much

better for the Ramblers as they were un-

able to find the bottom of the net until

nearly three minutes remained in the

contest.

Corey Redman had 13 points to lead

the Rambler, while Ryan Carson and

Butler added six points apiece and

Maceo Vroman chipped in with five

points.

Petoskey was led by Aron Lee with 13

points.

Boyne City 64, elk Rapids 44

MANCELONA — The Boyne

City boys basketball team took

charge over the final 16 minutes

of their Class C district quarter-

final contest with Elk Rapids and

in doing so, pulled away for a 64-

44 win on March 3.

“Great defensive effort. Really

happy with how loose we

played,” Boyne City coach Nick

Redman said. “We did a great job

of pushing the ball in transition

and then when it wasn’t there

playing disciplined half court of-

fense.”

After a back and forth first

quarter which saw both teams

take multiple possession leads,

the two squads would finish the

quarter knotted at 16-all after

Rambler junior Corey Redman

connected on a layup and free

throw after being fouled on a

drive with 1.4 seconds left in the

period.

The second quarter started

much different than the first as

they pace seemed to slow a bit be-

fore the Ramblers took off on a 7-

0 run with just about half of the

quarter remaining and would

close out the half with a 30-24

lead.

Boyne would come out of the

break and got back to doing what

they do well as they built a 40-30

lead with 2:26 left in the third and

would close out the quarter up

45-32.

The Ramblers would continue

to put the ball in the hoop over

the final eight minutes as they

used multiple runs to take leads

of 17, 18 and ultimately 20 points

as the contest neared the end.

“This was a big win, a great

start,” Redman added.

Leading Boyne City, 19-1, was

Corey Redman with 17 points, six

boards, three assists and three

steals, while Ryan Carson added

15 points and seven rebounds.

Maceo Vroman chipped in with

10 points and three assists and

Bradley Fouchia finished with 10

points.

For Elk Rapids, Adam Traut-

man had 13 points and Cole

Walker added 10.

Charlevoix 60, Mancelona 49

MANCELONA — Welcome

Back!

Charlevoix had a little (well,

not really little) surprise for

Mancelona when they squared

off in a Class C district quarterfi-

nal on March 3.

Rayder senior center, 6-10 Zach

Hankins, who signed last fall

with Ferris State University, saw

his first action of the season and

he did not disappoint as he led

Charlevoix with a 21 point effort.

The teams played to an 11-11

first quarter and once again kept

things even as they were knotted

at 25-all at intermission, but a big

run by the Rayders in the third

would give them the breathing

room they were looking for as

they took a 43-32 lead into the

final eight minutes of regulation.

Charlevoix, 7-14, would also get

18 points from Austin Putman

and another 14 from Nate Moon.

With the win, the Rayders

faced East Jordan on Wednesday,

March 5 after we went to press.

Mancelona was led by Brandon

Dingman with 20 points.

EAST JORDAN — Logger jun-

ior Andrew Stevens floated in a

running six footer with just over

three seconds left in the game to

lift Boyne Falls to a 49-48 non-con-

ference boys basketball victory

over East Jordan on February 28.

“This was a good measuring

stick game for us, a good quality

game against a strong opponent,”

Logger coach Tim Smith said. “I

appreciate East Jordan playing

us, we have a ton of respect for

them, not everyone will take on

playing us, we look forward to

the match-up every year.”

With both teams enjoying

strong seasons, those in atten-

dance expected to be treated to a

well played contest and thats ex-

actly what they got.

The early part of the contest

saw the two teams trying to feel

each other out, and with their

grind it out half court offense,

the Loggers were able to take an

early 8-4 lead just under five and

a half minutes into the game, be-

fore the Red Devils would hit

from deep to cut it to 8-7 just sec-

onds later.

Boyne Falls would then end the

quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 13-7

lead on a Clay Whitley triple and

an Andrew Stevens putback.

“We played smart basketball,

no real bad turnovers and took

care of the ball pretty good,”

coach Smith noted.

Things would get scary for the

Loggers early in the second quar-

ter as senior guard Brendan Ma-

telski came down hard on his

right wrist, elbow and side going

up for a rebound and would have

to be removed from the game.

However he would re-enter a few

minutes later, not knowing at the

time he had suffered a broken

wrist.

Boyne Falls would hold leads of

seven and eight points through-

out most of the quarter as they

would take a 27-20 lead into the

half.

The third quarter would open

with the Red Devils throwing an

errant pass and turning it over

on their first possession and the

Loggers would respond with Mar-

cus Matelski scoring on a base-

line turnaround jumper to give

BF their largest lead of the night

at 29-20.

East Jordan would respond

with free throws from Donny

Cutler and a basket by Jordan

Weber to pull within 29-26 with

4:50 remaining in the quarter.

Boyne Falls would then go on 8-

4 run to end the third, taking a 37-

30 lead into the final eight

minutes of regulation.

The Red Devils would then

show everyone in attendance why

they are never out of a contest as

they opened up the fourth with a

5-0 run on a three pointer by

Noah Bacchus and a basket by

Cutler off a steal to close the

game to 37-35 just under a minute

into the quarter.

The teams would then trade

baskets over the next three min-

utes before Cutler would score on

an up and under move to knot the

score at 39-all with 3:57 left to

play.

Marcus Matelski would then

connect on a pair of charity

tosses for the Loggers and Bac-

chus would respond with a shot

in the lane for the Red Devils to

keep pace at the 3:20 mark.

Following a Logger miss, the

Red Devils would take their first

lead of the game on a Cutler

drive and foul, making it 44-41

with 2:23 to go in the game.

Marcus Matelski would pull BF

back to within one point follow-

ing a Logger timeout. East Jor-

dan would then miss and

following another BF timeout,

the Loggers would go to Matelski

again and he would respond with

the go ahead basket at about the

one minute mark.

Weber would then give EJ the

lead, 46-45 on a three foot shot,

only to see Matelski fouled on the

next Logger possession and

calmly put both freebies through

for a 47-46 BF lead with 29.6 re-

maining.

Cutler would then respond for

the Red Devils, driving right,

scoring and drawing the foul

with 15.9 left in the game. He was

unable to convert the charity

toss, and with the Loggers grab-

bing the rebound, BF would call

timeout.

Running the clock down on

their final possession, Boyne

Falls looked to get the ball to

Marcus Matelski, but a bobble by

the Loggers would see the Red

Devils gamble for possession and

Brendan Matelski would find a

cutting Stevens near the elbow

and he would take it in lane and

float up what would turn out to

be the game winner with 3.9 sec-

onds to go as East Jordan was un-

able to get off a shot as time

expired.

“It was a nice win, a costly win

for us, (with Brendan Matelski

breaking his wrist)” Smith

added. “Brendan is our leader,

now we just have to find a way to

go on without him. We’re still

good enough to do some special

things heading into districts, we

just have to find a different way

to do it.”

St. Igance 74, east Jordan 72

EAST JORDAN — When you’re

on, you’re on.

That happened to be the case

for Jordan Weber against St.

Ignace as the sophomore hit eight

triples en route to 36 points, but it

wasn’t enough as the Red Devils

fell to the Saints 74-72 in a non-

conference matchup on February

27.

The loss dropped the Red Dev-

ils to 15-3 on the season.

The Saints jumped out early to

a 17-11 lead and would have to

withstand a strong Red Devil sec-

ond quarter, but still managed to

take a 33-32 lead into the inter-

mission.

The two teams would play

pretty evenly in the third as St.

Ignace would extend their lead to

58-55 heading into the fourth, but

the Red Devils were unable to

overcome the early deficit and

ran out of time.

Noah Bacchus would add 11

points for the Red Devils, while

Isaiah Sladek chipped in with 10.

The Saints were led by Gage

Kreski with 25 points and Cole

Thompson finished with 17.

AUBURN HILLS – Another

historic first for Boyne City

High School wrestler Conner

Mills.

Mills finished sixth in the 152-

pound class last weekend in the

Michigan High School Athletic

Association Division IV State Fi-

nals at The Palace of Auburn

Hills.

Mills, a senior, is the first

Boyne wrestler to earn a medal

at the Finals, and it came weeks

after he became the first Ram-

bler to win individual district

and regional championships.

He finished 2-3 in the state

tournament, winning his first

two bouts to reach the semifinal

round.

“He lost to the fifth-place kid,

the second-place kid and the

third-place kid,” Boyne coach

Don Nohel said. “And he wres-

tled with all of those guys. It was

great competition for him, a

great experience for him.

“It’s a testament to Conner.

He’s a kid with some talent and

he works hard at it. He was given

the opportunity to develop his

talents and to do some pretty

cool stuff. I’m extremely happy

for him and his family.”

Mills, who was ranked fifth at

152 in Division IV by Michigan

Grappler, opened the tourna-

ment with a 5-1 win over Calvin

Payne of Concord, then downed

seventh-ranked Andy Waterman

of Constantine, 7-1, to reach the

semifinals.

He lost to third-ranked Ali

Rashad of Highland Park-De-

troit Renaissance, 6-3. In the

wrestlebacks, Mills dropped a 20-

4 technical fall to top-ranked

Austin Hughes of Saginaw Nou-

vel, and fell to sixth-ranked

Chris O’Donnell of Lawton, 3-0,

in the fifth-place match.

Mills, whose season was short-

ened by injury, finished 23-7.

Kyle Johnson of Hudson de-

feated Rashad, 5-4, in the title

match.

Johnson, who was ranked

fourth, opened with a 13-1 major

decision victory over Charlevoix

senior Jake Novotny. Novotny

was then eliminated by Jukoada

Sexton of Bronson, 3-2. Novotny

finished 47-9.

Charlevoix’s Sam Hovie fin-

ished 1-2 at 160 in the tourna-

ment. Hovie, who was ranked

ninth, opened with an 8-2 loss to

third-ranked Billy Abbott of Vas-

sar.

Hovie rebounded to beat

Josiah Rabine of New Haven on

a pin in 4:57 before falling, 3-2, to

Brian Sumbar of Hudson. Hovie,

a junior, finished 48-7.

automotive review

Closing its first full year, the

Encore became the Buick

lineup’s fifth model and second

crossover, ringing up sales suc-

cess in one of the industry’s

fastest-growing segments.

Entering the small SUV and

small luxury SUV segment in

the U.S. at the end of last Janu-

ary, the Encore helped boost

sales in a rapidly expanding

market that just last year

alone, grew by 52 percent from

2012.

“Right out of the gate, de-

mand for the Encore was

high,” said Tony DiSalle, vice

president of Buick marketing.

“It accounted for most of the

segment’s growth last year and

that’s because it offers the

right safety, technology, and

features in the right-sized vehi-

cle for many customers.”

As one of the first luxury

crossovers of its size, Encore’s

U.S. retail sales reached 31,046

units during its first full year

of sales. Globally, the Encore

sold 97,311 vehicles in calendar

year 2013, helping Buick set its

global sales record of 1,032,056

last year.

“The small SUV segment

looks like the next hot spot in

the new-car market,” said Karl

Brauer, senior analyst for Kel-

ley Blue Book. “The combina-

tion of functionality and fuel

efficiency offered by models

like the Buick Encore makes

them a compelling value equa-

tion for consumers.  We’re see-

ing rising research activity in

these models from users of

KBB.com, and we expect sales

to grow in the coming months

and years.”

Encore’s early entry to these

segments is significant. Com-

bined, the segments are ex-

pected to more than double in

sales between now and 2018.

The Encore earned an Insur-

ance Institute for Highway

Safety 2013 Top Safety Pick

and 5-star Overall Vehicle

Score for safety from the Na-

tional Highway Traffic Safety

Administration. It also ranked

highest in the Sub-Compact

CUV segment in the 2013 J.D.

Power Initial Quality StudySM

and among others, was named

the winner of Kelley Blue

Book’s 2014 5-Year Cost to Own

awards in the Luxury Compact

SUV/Crossover category.

Encore customers cite good

fuel economy, high quality and

exterior design as the top rea-

sons for purchase, with one in

two buyers coming from a non-

General Motors brand.

Closing its first full year, the encore became the Buick lineup’s fifth model and second crossover, ringing upsales success in one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments. PHOTO “© geneRAL MOTORS.”

Great country ranch on 5 acres near east Jordan By Jim Akans

Stretch out and enjoy the

beauty and tranquility of liv-

ing in the north with this out-

standing, three-bedroom,

two-bath ranch situated on ap-

proximately five acres near

East Jordan.

The nearly 1,500 square foot

floor plan features generously

sized rooms, open and func-

tional design and plenty of

amenities. Among those are a

gorgeous kitchen with wood

cabinetry, center island and

wood floors, a master bath

with large corner soaking tub,

and much more. A huge 32 by

40 foot garage/pole barn is at-

tached to the main home via a

short breezeway, offering con-

venient access to your vehicles,

tons of storage and even a

workspace area. For even

more storage potential, there is

a 12 by 8 foot shed on the back

side of the pole barn.

There are several decks on

the home, two smaller one on

the front and a large open deck

on the back, offering plenty of

options for sitting back and en-

joying the views or entertain-

ing friends. For wintertime

recreation; the home and prop-

erty are near area snowmobile

trails.

This great country ranch

home on approximately five

acres is located at 970 Advance

Road near East Jordan and it is

listed at just $99,900. For a

Most homeowners aren’t aware

that there are dozens of ways their

homes are leaking air. Air leaks

can drastically affect the home’s

heating and cooling system, forc-

ing it to run more often than it

would if these leaks were plugged.

By not addressing and repairing

these leaks, you can realistically

expect to pay higher utility bills

all year long.

But why shell out the money if

you don’t have to? As you’ll see,

these problems are so easy to fix

that any do-it-yourselfer can finish

the job over the course of a week-

end. In this article, we’ll point out

several ways your home might be

leaking air and how to fix them so

you can preserve the heat this winter.

Tools and MaterialsMeasuring tape

Utility knife

Duct tape

Foam insulation strips

Silicone caulk

Spray foam insulation

Water heater blanket insulation

Fiberglass pipe wrap

Electrical outlet insulators

Pipe sleeve insulation

Foil-backed bubble wrap

Safety TipSome of these jobs may place you in dusty

or dirty areas of the home or in areas where

you will come into contact with fiberglass in-

sulation. Always wear eye goggles, a quality

air mask and work gloves when in these

areas. Also, if you are working

with fiberglass insulation, wear-

ing long pants and a long-sleeved

shirt is recommended.

Step 1: Seal Outlet Boxes onOutside Walls

Receptacle and switch boxes

that are installed on outside walls

have gaps which allow the heat in

your home to pass right through.

Remove the cover plates and slip a

pre-cut electrical outlet foam in-

sulator over the receptacle or

switch and then re-install the

cover plate. This will help seal the

box off and prevent air from es-

caping.

For even greater heat-loss prevention, fill

in the hole where the wires enter the outlet

box with silicone caulk before installing the

insulator.

Step 2: Insulate Ventilation DuctsIf you have ventilation ducts in your attic,

they may be leaking air which will cause

them to form condensation. To prevent this,

wrap the ventilation ducts with thin batts of

fiberglass insulation.

Step 3: Check Windows for DraftsLeaky windows are perhaps the most com-

mon culprit in the fight for heat preserva-

tion. Check your windows for any drafty

spots. If you find your windows are drafty, re-

move the casing and fill in all of the gaps

with pieces of fiberglass insulation. For very

thin gaps, push the insulation in the gap

using a paint stirrer or some other thin, long

tool.

Step 4: Check the PipesCheck your plumbing and gas lines for

gaps, especially where they are run through

walls. Take a can of spray foam insulation

and fill in these gaps. Be careful you don’t

over-spray an area, however; as this insula-

tion expands tremendously.

Step 5: Insulate the Water HeaterIf your water heater sits in a colder part of

the house, like the basement, the surround-

ing chilly air could be sucking the heat out of

the tank. To maximize the tank’s heat preser-

vation, you should install a water heater in-

sulation blanket over it. Follow the

manufacturer’s instructions when installing

the blanket kit in order to ensure the best re-

sults.

Step 6: Wrap Exposed PipesCopper plumbing pipes can freeze easily in

the winter and sweat notoriously in the sum-

mer. To help prevent this, wrap every inch of

exposed pipe with either pre-formed foam

pipe sleeves or pipe wrap insulation. Secure

the insulation with duct tape to prevent it

from falling off.

Step 7: Seal and Wrap Duct-workIf you have exposed duct-work in your

basement or attic, wrap the ducts with paper-

backed insulation or foil-backed bubble wrap.

Use spray foam insulation to seal around the

ducts wherever they pass through ceilings,

walls and the roof.
