Portsmouth is the second largest city in
the ceremonial county of Hampshire on the south
coast of England. Portsmouth is notable for
being the United Kingdom's only island city; it is
mainly on Portsea Island.

John Dickens: Charles‘ dad
• He was a clerk in the Royal Navy Pay
Office.
• Dickens depicted his father in the character
of Wilkins Micawber in his semi-autobiographical
novel ”David Copperfield”.

• When he was about ten years old his
family moved to London, where young
Charles attended school.
• His father was imprisoned for debt and the
boy had to work in a blacking factory. This
experience was terrible for him.
Quando aveva circa dieci anni, la sua famiglia si trasferì a Londra, dove il
giovane Charles frequentava la scuola.

Dickens remembered this period as the
darkest of his life and often described
similar situations and atmospheres in his
novels.
For example Stephen Blackpool in “Hard
Times” is a factory worker at one of
Bounderby's mills and his life is hard and
without satisfactions.Dickens ricordava questo periodo come il più oscuro della sua vita e spesso descriveva
situazioni e atmosfere simili nei suoi romanzi.
Per esempio Stephen Blackpool in “Hard Times” è un operaio in una delle fabbriche di

On his father‘s release he was sent back to
school, but after two years he went to work as a
clerk, then he became a parliamentary reporter.
He also began to contribute to magazines and
wrote series of sketches which were
caricatures of the life and manners all the time.
Al rilascio del padre fu mandato di nuovo a
scuola, ma dopo due anni andò a lavorare
come impiegato e poi diventò un giornalista

He married Catherine Hogarthin 1836, who
bore him ten children, but the marriage
was not happy and ended in a separation.

philanthropic activities
and so I took part in
public reading and
amateur theatricals to
raise money for
charities.

settled there with his family.

where he occasionally went for refuge
from his engagements during the 1850s.

In 1847 to 1868 Dickens
made a triumphant return
to America , which,
however, helped to ruin
his health. Nevertheless,
he engaged in another
public reading tour of
Britain, but his health
broke.

America, che, però, contribuì a rovinare la sua salute. Tuttavia si

Charles Dickens died of a stroke in 1870
and was burried in Westminster Abbey

PICKWICK
PAPERS
Thanks to the good reviews which followed the
pubblication of “Sketches by Boz”, the publishers
Chapman and Hall paid him to write the texts to
accompany the drawings of the popular artist Seymour.
These texts gave origin to The Pickwick Papers”.
Grazie alle recensioni positive che seguirono la pubblicazione di "Sketches by Boz", gli
editori Chapman and Hall lo pagarono per scrivere dei testi per accompagnare i disegni del

marriage, Dickens was
oppressed by financial
problems,so he
published incessantly
lot of novels, one of
these was Oliver Twist.

into a workhouse until the
age of nine, when I was
transferred to the
workhouse itself. All the
young boy were ill treated
and poorly fed.

published it in 1846.

retired buisnessman who
runs a school where
students must learn
nothing but facts.
