1. KEY SUMMARY

In groups of 4, students from Foundation in Natural Built Environment who took the Introduction to Business module need to do a charity drive event. The purpose of this assignment is to raise funds for charity organization. This project gives us an opportunity to run a business venture and as well to gain experience of how business is run throughout the whole week that is been given.

After a group of discussion and ideas that have been given from our group mates, we have decided to raise funds by selling soft ice cream. Ice cream are chosen because as you all know everyone around loves ice cream and we think is perfect to sell ice cream as it is easy to carry around when people buy them, and this takes us to a whole lots positive thinking of sticking to selling ice cream as its because of hot weather. This widens our range of customers as we will be doing in a university as it involves lots of students but still the main focus of selling ice cream is still the 4P’s PRICE,PRODUCT,PACKAGE and PROMOTION. Emaskang Sdn. Bhd has sponsored this ice cream machine.

All profits will be given to Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation, a place where they took after a down syndrome people. We choose this place is because they are currently undergoing tough times and financial issues. Emaskang Sdn. Bhd. have helped us on all foundation that are needed for us to help this innocent people in Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation.

In a period of a week that is given, our team have set up a booth in front of Student Life Centre in Taylors University Lakeside Campus to sell our soft ice cream and receive donation for Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation.

To raise a minimum of 2500 and donate it to Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation by selling soft ice cream

Sell a minimum of 500 cups of ice cream to achieve the targeted amount within a week

Create an awareness to the public of how this Down Syndrome kids are suffering

We choose to support Kiwanis Down Syndrome and donate our profits earned are because of we feel that with ice cream it brings smile to the people who ate it and bought it, we would want it to be the same way how the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation would feel when we like to lend a helping hand towards them. It also because they are having financial issues

3. TARGET MARKET

University Student

University students are the main target for us where as you can see teenagers love buying ice cream because of a hot weather, where they would actually even have the curtseys of helping all this down syndrome people. They would gave us a high percentage of our income . After a lot of research and been asked other students opinion, Taylors doesn’t sell ice cream and they would love to have an ice cream booth as our flavoring would attracts many people. Despite that, this university student doesn’t generate their one source of income, they will have enough of money and willing to spend on our products we are selling. All university would love to help those in need of money.

Friends and relatives

The booth that we are opened, are near to the student life center, and for your information is a place where many people would walk around there. People that knows us would have the confident and tend to trust us more to support our charity drive . This would help us by telling their friends around the university of how good the ice cream is.

4. COMPETITION ANALYSIS

Foundation in Natural and Built Environment | January Intake 2015 | Introduction To Business | BUS 30104

Page 7: Charity drive report

Taylor’s Lakeside University | Miss Tay Shir Men

Our competitors are from the other group, in our class, that were doing charity sales at the same period of time and week (1st – 4th December 2015). The two main competitors are.

THE FROZEN YOGURT

This group was selling a frozen yogurt where it is the same concept as ours, They are located right beside ours and in front of Student Life Centre.

Advantages:Their strategic location near the student life center, as it allows them to approach potential customer because they will be the first booth that sell an ice cream instead of ours. Their group would be attracted by many students by first to buy their products or at least they will receive some donations. This have effects ours that, more people would have bought theirs instead of ours, by this it will effect our income targets

Weaknesses:

Foundation in Natural and Built Environment | January Intake 2015 | Introduction To Business | BUS 30104

Page 8: Charity drive report

Taylor’s Lakeside University | Miss Tay Shir Men

They do not have variety of products to be sold after their ice cream machine has broke down and mainly they have less people of standing in front of their stores or either walk around to donate their products. Mostly they would relied on the people who pass by and their donations.

As both our teams sell the same product, we would say that our product are much cheaper than their and my mates always attracts customers

STICK IT HARD

This group is selling stickers. Their booth are located right in front of ours where it is the nearest to the administration office and commercial block.

Advantages:Their strategic location of near the administration office and commercial block allows then to approach potential customers. Their group would be the first seller to persuade customers as their group have always been walking around to promote their products. Their groups mainly knows how to attract people by the way they talk to customers and how they smile at everyone that passes by, they also walks around with sample of stickers.

Weaknesses:They do not have a a variety of products to be sold (Only stickers). Their stickers are always sold out the good ones first and the other

stickers for some people they would only look at it is not interesting enough and their pricing for one sticker is expensive

As both our teams sell the different products, we wouldn’t want to compare the prices. I would say that we attract people with our ice cream that cold our throats off and we have different flavors to try on.

5. PRODUCTS AND PRICING

5.1 Product

Our product during the charity drive is ice cream with variety choice of topping and float, our ice cream have 5 diversified topping that were respectively chosen by each of our group members which have

Taylor’s Lakeside University | Miss Tay Shir Men

our own different style and taste in the preference of topping for the ice cream. For our float we only choose two types of flavor drink that is coke and root bear. Our ice creams vary in topping design, from plain to fancy decoration.

5.2 Packaging

As for the packaging for our ice cream and float, we use a transparent plastic cup that come with two sizes, small cup for the ice cream and the medium cup for the float. We use transparent cup so that it could expose the colour of the ice cream and also the

decoration of the topping. This enables customers to see the products. Another reason behind why the ice cream packaged inside a plastic cup is to avoid the ice cream to get melt easily and prevent it from dripping into the hand.

7. PROMOTION

We prepared the entire necessary item needed in order for us to attract customers such as the posters. We even made our menu so that the costumers can look to our prices and they also known what type of topping for ice cream are we selling. For the store decorations we decided to design our booth simple,

nice and neat, and we let one of our group member as a DJ in order to attract costumers to our booth daily.

7.1 Social Media

Since the usage of Facebook is really popular with the teenagers nowadays, we decided to further promote our product on the social media posting all the ice cream and float menu and we let some of the costumers to upload their pictures with the product to acknowledge all their fr iends about our ice cream.

We also use other social media such as Snapchat and Wechat to promote and spread all the news about our charity drive through that social platform.

8. SPONSOR

First, we asked the, Kurniaan Maju Sdn. Bhd. to sponsor our charity drive but it was refused. Hence, we asked for sponsorship from Emaskang Sdn. Bhd. instead. As this company is financially generous and one of our team members know the CEO of the company very well, we approached them via phone calls, text, messages, e-mail and even a

Taylor’s Lakeside University | Miss Tay Shir Men

face-to-face meeting with the CEO. The company agreed to sponsor RM 1690, which covers the renting of the ice cream machine and even the capital of the itineraries for the product. The money was handed to by cash.

9. DISTRIBUTION

As we all know ice cream is easy to melt, we could not walk around Taylor’s to give samples instead we gave them our pamphlet to drop by our ice cream booth.

We sell our ice cream by hand and by that customers can immediately eat their ice cream upon their payment. We had also try to minimize waiting

Page 18: Charity drive report

Taylor’s Lakeside University | Miss Tay Shir Men

time by printing out our ice cream menu poster so it is easier for customer to decide on what ice cream flavor to buy. We had two people walking around the campus and promoting ice cream while another two people manage the ice cream and the donations and receipts. Other ways that we promote our ice cream is by social media such as Facebook, Instagram and even twitter. In average we approach in estimation of 200 people per day and usually quarter of them would either donate of purchase the product.

The price that we put upon the ice cream were affordable price based on the price that we spent to make our own flavor for the ice cream. For the first day we also ask feedbacks from the customer whether the price is okay.

10. GREEN MEASURE

The packaging that we used for the ice cream were plastic which is not really environmental friendly. We had to choose plastic instead of polystyrene due to the material of polystyrene is not easy to be compose. Even though the pricing of plastic is more expensive, we put environmental care our first priority in business.

11. HUMAN RESOURCE PLANNING

From the topic that we had learned in Introduction of business, coordination and systemize is a very important management process. Organizing parts for each of the member of the group determines a businesses efficiency and productivity, Our group used the horizontal Organizational type as our group is consist of small amount of people. This type of organizational chart is really efficient in our group as

work and effort in a small group is relatively transparent. This enables our group members to make decisions quickly and independently.

2266.00 which is by far really close to our target. Our group is really different from the other group as our group is the only group that’s selling ice cream. Why we chose ice cream as our business is also relevant as the amount of people selling ice cream in Taylors University is really small. In the other had we sell a very cheap amount of ice cream that only cost RM 4 per cup and add another RM 2 for toppings. The price for the Ice Cream is quite cheap and its really affordable.

What we did wrong is that we should had advertise our ice cream by using boards and pamphlets. At first, we had a problem advertising our ice cream to people as they didn't know what the ice cream looks like. We try to promote our ice cream by just inviting people to see our toppings and it did not work. We realized that customers were interested in our ice cream when they saw the final product itself. Later, we had created a lot of boards showing the final product of our ice cream and that had made a huge a impact to our business as many people started to buy our ice cream.
