• If people are competing against each other, they are called rivals.

• Are the Greasers and the Socs competing against each other?

• Yes!

• …. So they are rivals!!

Someone is defiant if they challenge or disobey another person.

e.g. The toddler defiantly stamped his feet when he was not allowed a sweety.

No!!!! They are well-behaved and obedient.
