Who?

Elinor- Protagonist of the books. Represents the “sense” in the title.

Marianne- The younger sister who represents the “sensibility” in the title.

Mrs. Dashwood- Second wife of Henry Dashwood

Thomas- The Dashwood’s manservant.

Where?

The next five chapters are all in Barton Cottage except for the last chapter which ends in Delaford.

The atmosphere is at first in great distress as they hear devastating news but it lightens and ends with happiness.

Chapter 46

The Dashwoods return to Barton Cottage where Marianne continues to recover from her illness. The next day wakes with better spirits and makes plans to go on a walk. Elinor is happy to see her sister taking her life more seriously but then remembers her promise to Willoughb, tell her everything.

Elinor and Marianne go on walk where Marianne ponders over Willoughby. She wonders if her imprudence what was led to her situation. She starts feeling guilty for her rudeness and selfishness. Elinor reveals everything Willoughby told her. Marianne is struck by the revelation.

Chapter 47

Elinor tells Mrs. Dashwood Willoughby’s story. She feels sorry for him but still cannot forgive him.

Marianne feels better knowing the truth and thinks it’s better that she didn’t marry him.

The Dashwoods’ servant, Thomas, returns with news that Mr. Ferrars. Marianne throws a fit but Elinor shows great dissapoinent and distress. Mrs. Dashwood realizes she should havepayed closer attention to Elinor.

Chapter 48

Elinor’s thoughts roam around Edward’s message to Lusy. She waits for news from anyone and asks her mother to write to Colonel Brandon for news. Her mother already has had no response. Soon after she thinks she saw Colonel Brandon arrive but it was actually Edward.

Upon Edward entering the house, Marianne and Margaret retreat leaving Elinor and Mrs. Dashwood to attend the guest. Mrs. Dashwood asks about Mrs. Ferrars. Edward first thinks they are talking about his mother but Elinor implies “Mrs. Edward Ferrars.

Edward is confused and then asks weather they meant Mrs. Robert Ferrars. It was Robert her married Lucy after all. Elinor leaves the room with tears of joy, Edward is in an akward situation so he leaves. Everyone is shocked an perplexed about the situation.

Chapter 49

After three hours Edward has the courage to do what he came to do which was to propose to Elinor. She accept, obviously, and everyone is extremely happy.

Edward explains the circumstances that led to his engagement with Lucy- they fell in love when they were teenagers but grew apart as they grew older. He had no clear path for his future, or friends so he only had Lucy.

Everyone is then interested in the topic of Robert’s and Lucy’s marriage.

Edward receives a letter from Lucy telling him to sever all romantic ties. He is pleased about this.

Elinor realizes along the way that Lucy meant to decieve people into thinking she had married Edward instead of Robert just to hurt her.

Colonel Brandon arrives at Barton and hears about the engagement

Mrs. Jennings sends a letter relating the story on Lucy and Robert.

John writes a letter stating how disappointed Mrs. Ferrars and Fanny are and how they will never forgive Lucy.

Mrs. Ferrars has no words about Edward

But John tells him to write a letter of “submission”.

At the end of the chapter Colonel Brandon and Edward leave together to visit Delaford.

Chapter 50

Mrs. Ferrars reconciles herself with Edwards situation although she is not a huge fan of Elinor.

Robert is still the favored son receiving a sum of ten thousand pounds.

Elinor and Edward live in Delaford and frequently invite Marianne and Colonel Brandon.

They invite them over in the hopes they form an attachment, which is succesful. Marianne and the Colonel become engaged and move in with Edward and Elinor.

Lucy’s real actions come to life: She manipulated Robert into marrying her. She then become important to Mrs. Ferrars.

Everyone is happy except Willoughby when he hears of Mariannes marriage and by the fact that Mrs. Smith forgives him.

This means that he could have been happy and rich if he’d acted faithfully to his emotions and married Marianne. If Mrs. Smith forgave him, she would have forgiven him even if he married Marianne.

Everyone between Barton and Delaford are right in the world.
