Transcript of CHAPTER Hard Resource (Printer) Sharing. Chapter Objectives Explain the concept of sharing a hard...
Chapter Objectives
• Explain the concept of sharing a hard resource
• Present the step-by-step process of placing a printer for sharing
• Describe the security features concerning a hard resource
• Examine the printer properties that could be set– General, port, scheduling etc.
Chapter Modules
• Hard Resource Sharing Concepts• Process of Placing a Printer for Sharing• Placing an Installed Printer for Sharing • Printer Security• Giving Permission to Use the Printer• Printer Properties: General• Printer Properties: Ports• Printer Properties: Scheduling and Security• Printer Properties: Device Settings

Hard Resource Configuration
Module Objectives
• Basics of hard resource sharing• Placing a printer for sharing• The concept of creating a printer• Printer installation notes• The concept of logical printers• Viewing logical printers as print
queues
Hard Resource Sharing
• Install the resource on the server• Place the hard resource for
network sharing• Install the hard resource as a
networked device from a client for sharing
Placing a Printer for Sharing
• Create the printer on the server using Add Printer module on the server
• Place the printer on the network for sharing– It can be placed for sharing during installation– Or by following the steps as in placing a soft
resource such as directory for sharing
• Define printer access permissions• Set other printer properties

Printer Installation Notes
• In Microsoft NT, the printer is installed as a logical printer– More details are presented when logical
connections are explained• In one aspect, network installation is
different from single user installation– Printer driver for all the different client
operating systems on the network also need to be installed

Notes on Printer Creation
• Printer drivers for all the client operating systems on the network may be stored for the client’s convenience – A path to the directory containing the drivers
need to be specified during installation
• Following the creation of the printer, the Icon for the printer will appear with a hand holding the printer in the Printers window

Module Objectives
• Overview of placing a printer for sharing
• A note on sharing• Placing a printer for sharing
– Case example– Steps– Demonstration
Placing a Printer for Sharing
• If a printer is already designated to be shared during installation, it need not be placed for sharing at this tim
• If an existing unshared printer connected to the server is to be shared, then it must be placed for sharing explicitly
A Note on Share
• Assigning long share names may prevent some MS-DOS machines on the network from accessing the printer
• If MS-DOS machines are serviced on the network, it is desirable to assign a name conforming to the DOS 8.3 naming format

Module Objectives
• Focus on security issues• Printer permission• Listing of access permissions to the printer• Permissions and privileges
– No access and simple printer access
• Manage documents privilege• Full control privilege• Understanding the processing of
documents by printers
Security Issues
• Permission– Permission to use the printer
• Audit– Events such as print, changing
permissions etc. can be audited
• Ownership– Taking ownership of the printer
Printer Permission
• As in the case of a soft resource, permission can also be given to users for the use of the printer
• Permission must be given to a user or a group of users before they could connect to the networked printer for usage
Permissions and Privileges
• No Access – Denies access to the printer
• Printer– Allows the user to print on the printer
• Manage Documents and Full Control enable the user to control the printer
Manage Documents
• Settings on the document can be changed
• Control on the printing process– Pause– Resume– Restart– Delete
• Controls are exercised at the document level
Full Control
• At the (logical) printer level– Change document order of printing– Pause, resume and purge– Change properties– Change permissions– Delete printers
• At the document level, all the privileges available under Manage Documents are also available here

Module Objectives
• Printer permission case scenario• Giving permission to
access/manage a printer– Case example– Steps– Demonstration
A Scenario in Printer Permissions
Everyone(Print)
Inspectors(Manage Documents)
Print Operators(Full Control)
Giving Permission to Access/Manage the Printer:
Case Example
• Everyone– Print permission
• Inspectors– Manage documents
• Because Everyone is given print permission when a logical printer is created, only the inspectors need to be given the Manage Document permission

Properties
General
• Comments and location of the printer
• Driver Installation• Separate page definer• Print processor
– Treatment of data stream such as RAW etc.
• Printing a test page
Ports
• Selection of ports– LPT1: etc.
• Port configuration– Timing of retransmission attempt
• Addition or deletion of ports• Enable bi-directional support for printers
supporting this feature• Printer spooling for supporting multiple
printers
Module Objectives
• Printer scheduling• Display of scheduling option• Sharing and security• Display of sharing and security
properties
Scheduling
• Availability in terms of time period in a day
• Priority assignment to this logical printer
• Printer spooling details– Start printing after last page is spooled– Keep spooled documents– etc.
Sharing and Security
• Sharing and Security were discussed in length under individual sections entitled with the namesake
• Sharing– Placing the printer for sharing
• Security– Access to printers for usage and/or
management
Module Objectives
• Device settings• Device settings for HP LaserJet III• Display of device settings
Device Settings
• Device setting apply to the particular printer that is connected
• The settings differ depending on the printer
• The more advanced printers will support more device setting features
Device Settings for HP LaserJet III
• Tray output assignment– Setting the paper and envelope size
• Specifying the memory installed in the printer
• Page protection– Instructs the computer to receive a
full page in memory before printing
Device Setting for HP LaserJet III Continued
• Font cartridge specification– Cartridges that are loaded into slots
• Loading of soft fonts– Loading of software fonts
• Halftone printing setup– Various shading and tone
adjustments for printing graphics
