Message from the Board
Summer is here and it is safe to say that the heat has officially arrived. We
would like to thank everyone who participated, volunteered and supported
the MS Walk and the Carnation Campaign; both were a huge success! Along
with the beautiful weather, the Simcoe County Chapter has many upcoming
events and fundraisers to look forward to in the months ahead.
As you probably know, fundraising is such an important part of keeping our chapter alive and
well. We are dependent on this source of income to help support our clients with the services
they need to maintain a high quality of life, and donating to research that will continue to help
develop treatment and ultimately a cure.
We have many great events in our area that are so much fun to organize and attend, and we
thank you all for your continued support! If you have an idea for a new event, we are always
open to hearing from you and helping you organize your own event! Every little bit helps. For
ideas, you can visit DIYMSfundraising.ca.
The MS Society of Canada is a leader in finding a cure for MS and enhancing the quality of life
for those living with MS. Along with funding medical research, our Chapter offers client
information and support, funding programs, educational events and guest speakers, support
groups, and a library. At the Simcoe County Chapter, we are proud of the many
services we provide to the MS community.
With your support, respect and involvement, the Simcoe County Chapter
remains committed to the MS mission. Your input and ideas are important and
invaluable. Feel free to contact us by mail, e-mail, or telephone. With your
feedback and the efforts of our membership, volunteers, and community, we
can achieve significant growth!
We wish you all a safe and happy summer and hope that everyone is able to stay cool!
In dedication and service,

2012 Carnation Campaign Success
The 2012
Simcoe
County Chapter’s
Carnation Campaign
was a huge success
The flowers were beautiful, the
weather co-operated, the wonderful
volunteers did their work and, as a
result, the flowers were sold out. A
few remaining pots were donated to
various nursing homes.
Our pre-sales orders were great, and next year we will look to increase our orders even more.
A huge thank you to the drivers who delivered these flowers to various businesses throughout
the county. The carnation committee worked diligently to make sure that everything moved
smoothly and efficiently. Thank you to each and every one of you. Thank you to everyone who
worked in any way to make the 2012 campaign a success. A job well done!

MS DOES THE ARTS
As many of you know, perhaps having recently attended our May 30th
event "MS Does the Arts", one of our talented members, Ardith
Irvine, wrote a musical called "One-Legged Dancer". Our first
performance on the evening of May 30th was a huge success!
The testimonials confirmed to us that the show must go on again … "The MS message was
clear, heartwarming, heartbreaking and really gave understanding to living with MS … I hope
that venues open up to them to communicate these valuable messages". Indeed, Ardith is
booked for a Thunder Bay performance in September and a second performance here in Barrie
on Wednesday, November 7th. Don’t miss out as there are only 200 tickets being sold!
Contact the chapter office (705-733-0488) to reserve your seat
on Wednesday, November 7th. Tickets are $10.00 each.
As part of this production, Ardith is inviting others affected with multiple sclerosis who have an
artistic talent to participate in this incredible evening event, "MS Does the Arts"! If you are
an artist, please contact us to participate.
After much effort on Ardith's part and help from other members of the MS Society, her dream
of producing this show has finally come to fruition. Please congratulate Ardith in celebrating
her talents and come out and enjoy a second evening of the arts in November.
The winner of the May 30th raffle prize, a handmade Oriental Wall Hanging, was won by Karen
O’Donnell. What a lucky girl!
November’s performance promises door prizes, goodies bags, and other surprises. Come join
us for an evening of fun! Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and you can buy your ticket at the door
(hint: you better hope that there are some tickets left if you wait that long!).
We wish to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for awarding Simcoe County Chapter with a
grant to produce this show. We will also be making tool kits to send to other chapters around
Ontario so others can host a similar event for their communities.

Chefs’ tourney honours memory of association founder
On June 18th, a tournament in honour of one of the founding chefs of the Muskoka and District
Chef Association was held. Thomas Hay died in March after living with multiple sclerosis for
25 years. Chefs and golfers from Simcoe-Muskoka gathered to honour chef Thomas Hay and
raise money for the MS Society and the chef’s association.
The tournament raised $1,180 for the MS Society, and those funds will be used to help those
in Simcoe County living with MS. The MS Society, Simcoe County Chapter greatly appreciates
this generous donation.

News and Views
Scooter, car drivers need to know rules
A recent article published in the Orillia Packet and Times expresses a friendly reminder of the rules when operating motorized wheelchairs, medical and electric
scooters.
Electric scooters, motorized wheelchairs and medical scooters do not
require registration, licence plates, a driver’s licence or vehicle insurance.
People operating motorized wheelchairs are treated the same as pedestrians. Wheelchairs can be driven by muscular power or other
types of power and are designed for and used by people whose mobility is limited by one or more conditions or functional impairments. In general, municipalities establish bylaws for where
wheelchairs can or cannot be used. Operators should check with their local municipality to ensure bylaws permit their use on sidewalks.
MS SOCIETY OF CANADA, SIMCOE COUNTY CHAPTER – July 2012 PAGE 13
News and Views (continued)
A sidewalk should be the first choice for someone using a wheelchair or medical scooter. When there is no wheelchair-accessible curb, the person should return to the sidewalk at the first
available opportunity. If there is no sidewalk available, people using wheelchairs or personal mobility devices should travel, like pedestrians, along the left shoulder of the roadway, facing oncoming traffic.
Wearing reflective or colourful clothing and attaching a bright orange flag and a light to the rear of your scooter will make you more visible to motorists.
epic-enabled.com is an “Overland” company that is committed to opening up Africa to “Enable the Disabled” travelers through accessible safaris & tours. Holidays are
wheelchair accessible & family friendly adventure trips to South Africa.
9Livesadventures.com caters to the extreme adventure seekers. They offer accessible accommodation and adrenaline fueled activities.
DisabledTravelers.com has created an accessible adventure resource for travelers.
Access 2 Entertainment
Launched in December, 2004, the Access 2 Entertainment program seeks to help businesses
provide quality customer service to customers with disabilities. Through the program, people
with disabilities who require a support person carry a personal Access 2 Entertainment card
with them. The card indicates to the ticket seller that the individual does indeed require the
support of an attendant.
MS SOCIETY OF CANADA, SIMCOE COUNTY CHAPTER – July 2012 PAGE 14
News and Views (continued)
The card provides free admission (or a substantial discount) for the support person at all
participating entertainment venues. The person with the disability pays the regular admission
fee.
Many people with disabilities require the assistance of a support person to help them with
daily activities. Over the years, different ticketed venues have had varying policies on
admission fees for someone acting as a support person. Often it ended up being left to an
employee at the ticket counter to determine the validity of someone’s disability, their need for
an attendant, and the discount – if any.
Recreation and leisure activities are an important component of good health and well-being.
Through education, businesses have begun to recognize that there are special needs for their
customers with disabilities and that it’s necessary to accommodate them in order to provide
the best possible customer service. This makes a big difference to the community.
In order to obtain a card, an application form must be submitted by a person with a disability
who requires the assistance of a support person. The application must be authorized by a
registered health care or disability service provider. Easter Seals Canada administers the
application and delivery of the card.
