Section 4.0 General information 4.0.1 Introduction In the packaging sector a multitude of different container has been used in the past. The chemical industry has agreed upon the following drum sizes in order to stem the multitude of types: ≥ 200 Liter 150 Liter 120 Liter 60 Liter 30 Liter 25 Liter (only plastic drum-non-removable head) For PE-drums (jerricans) are several volumes of the same basic dimensions available. This is possible by the use of different heights tool inserts in a manufacturing tool. 30 L jerricans are for products with reduced density and 25 L jerricans are for products with higher density. For material and manufacturing of packaging the EU- and national directives and regulations are applied (e.g. concentration of heavy metal and recyclability). It is recommended to largely use the container types listed in the following for the following reasons:

Standardization

By use of standard containers low-cost and environment-relevant packaging solutions can be achieved.

Possibility of multiple used Especially for standardized container the possibility to recondition and thus to reuse is

existing. Standardized drums can be used by all fillers in the chemical branch as well.

Frontier crossing traffic It is necessary to put the achieved and present standards into the deciding boards at

DIN/CEN in order to be able to simplify the international exchange of goods and to in-crease possibilities for reconditioning. Corresponding efforts have been given rise to.

Environmental issues Also legal interests have to be taken into consideration with the use of packaging (pack-

aging ordinance, dangerous goods transport). This has been considered when working out the following standard container.

4.0.2 Application Depending on product viscosity drums – non-removable head (tight head) or drums – removable head (open head) are used. In any case the filler bears the responsibility for use of a packing for the individual goods and ways of conveyance. When using packaging for dangerous goods the presuppositions stated in the introduction of section 1.3 have to be observed.
