LECTURA
SAM 02-57 Las universidades del mundo hispano. Read the information about some of the
characteristics of universities and university systems in many Spanish-speaking countries, and
then answer the questions.

SAM 02-60 La vida universitaria. Paso 1. Preparación.
In this activity you will use LiveChat to have a conversation with another student in your class.
This will prepare you to interact with a native Spanish speaker through the WeSpeke partner
chat.
With a partner from class, record a conversation about the theme of the chapter, university life.
You may use the guiding questions as a starting point, but you don’t need to use them all. Your
recording should be about eight minutes in length.
Preparación
First – Look at the questions. Think about how you might answer them.
Second – Think about what you’ve studied recently in class.
Third – Think about any other questions that you might want to ask about this topic.
Fourth – Refer to your textbook for help and/or an online dictionary. You might also want to ask
your instructor to help you.
Last – When you feel ready, use LiveChat in MySpanishlab to record yourself and a partner
talking about the theme of the chapter, university life. You don’t need to use all of the questions
listed; feel free to add others as you go. Plan on an eight-minute conversation with your partner,
unless told otherwise by your instructor.
Guiding Questions (Note: Occasionally, you may notice that some questions are repeated from previous chapters.
This is done intentionally, to help you reinforce what you have learned.)

SAM 02–62 ¡A descubrir la vida universitaria!
In this activity, you will have the opportunity to go online and put your new skills to work by
having a conversation with a native Spanish speaker through WeSpeke or another similar service.
You may use the guiding questions as a starting point, but don’t feel you need to use them all—a
conversation is more than a list of questions. Add your own questions and be sure to review the
conversation strategies in the link provided. Your conversation should be about eight minutes in
length, unless told otherwise by your instructor.
1. Detalles de tu pareja. Describe your speaking partner. What was his/her name? Where is
your partner from? What other personal details did you find out about your speaking partner?
2. Detalles de la conversación. Describe what you discussed with your speaking partner. What
are three or four things that he/she said about this topic that were interesting to you?
3. Detalles de comunicación. Rate your communication ability with your speaking partner on a
scale of one to five (five being able to communicate perfectly). Did you understand
everything? Were you understood completely? Explain: What was difficult and what was
easy to communicate during this exchange? Did you learn any new words, phrases or
grammar points that were helpful to you?
Estrategias para una buena conversación
I am new at this! As a beginning student of Spanish, there are many things you will not
understand. Don’t worry, that is completely normal. It will be helpful to inform your
conversation partner that you are new and trying to learn. Here is a useful phrase that you can
use when you first begin your conversation: Yo no hablo mucho español, pero quiero
aprenderlo. Gracias por hablar conmigo en español. Remember, your conversation
partners are learning as well, and they understand your struggles. Another idea is to use hand
gestures and body language to communicate your ideas.

Use online dictionaries! While you are chatting with your partner, you will be in front of a
computer or other internet-connected device. Open another tab in your browser with an
online dictionary. You can also have a tab open with the digital version of your textbook. As
you speak, you can quickly look up words you don’t remember or new terms altogether.
Be smart and be safe! If you find an online partner who is rude or offensive, or makes you
feel uncomfortable in any way, simply end the conversation by disconnecting. Be very
careful about sharing personal information (home address, phone number, and so on). Also,
most services offer the option to block someone from contacting you or knowing when you
are online. If needed, the service provider can be contacted to report the person.

Mexican retailer, such as Cimaco. Investigate the prices of at least ten common back-to-school
items that many college students buy. Then find the current exchange rate for the Mexican peso
and convert each price to U.S. dollars. Describe how the prices compare to what you would pay
for such items in the United States. Take the findings of your research to class in order to
compare your results with those of your classmates. In groups, tell each other in Spanish which
products you found and what their prices are.

SAM 02-74 Service learning: Estudiantes hispanohablantes
Paso 1. Obtain an electronic copy of your campus map and request permission to create a
bilingual version of it to be used by Spanish-speaking visitors and current and future students.
Work with your class to label all of the buildings that have specific functions in Spanish, while
also leaving the English words visible. For example, where the map shows the campus post
office, you should write Oficina de Correos, and for the dining hall you should write Cafetería.
Submit the final bilingual map to the Office of Admission or Recruitment as a gift from your
Spanish class.
Paso 2. Studying in another country far away from home is an exciting and extremely rewarding
experience, and a fabulous opportunity for personal and academic growth. Spending time with
international students on your own campus and talking with them about their experiences and
perspectives can be just as valuable an experience for you, and at the same time you can make
another person feel more welcome in your campus community. Contact your university’s Office
of International Relations and volunteer to serve as a buddy or mentor for an international
student. Let them know that you are studying Spanish and that, ideally, you would like to help a
Spanish-speaking exchange student.
