Chapter 19, Recognitions and a Dream
Lauryn, Tara, Eva, Nicole, Tatyana, Justin
• Odysseus, Athena, and Telemachus are in the Hall
• They move Odysseus’ armor so it does not get dirty from soot
• There is small conversations, and then Athena locks the doors of the hall and holds up a golden lamp • The men realize that she is a God
• Penelope and Odysseus soon talk• She asks him many questions about his family• She then asks if he knew Odysseus, and she
tells him that she has wasted away with want for him while all her suitors pressure her to choose a husband
• She tells Odysseus of the loom, how she unwove it at night, and how she has no more strength to fight the men
• He tells her of how he “met” Odysseus at the sea
• Hearing all these stories, Penelope and the Nurse begin to weep
• The Nurse beings to wash his legs and feet, and she notices a scar that Odysseus had gotten long ago boar hunting
• She recognized him, but he made her promise not to tell the others
• When Penelope goes to bed she weeps for Odysseus, and she cannot fall asleep
• However, Athena appears and casts sleep upon her
