This is Joan and Thomas

Joan is female. She is

a woman

Thomas is male. He is a

man

We are going to look at how Joan and Thomas’s bodies change as they get older. To do that properly we will need to

see them naked; without their clothes on.

Joan and Thomas are now naked. They are both 18. They didn’t always look like this. 18 years ago they looked very

different.

Here are Joan and Thomas as babies. They are just a few days old. They are very small and can only lie down. Their

bodies look very similar.

Here Joan and Thomas are 2 years old. They are toddlers. They can stand up now and are learning to walk.

Joan and Thomas are now 10 years old. They are taller, but their bodies are still very similar. The only difference to see is

that Joan has a vagina and Thomas has a penis.

Here Joan and Thomas are 18 years old. They are now adults. Their bodies have changed and look different. Joan has breasts,

and hair has grown under her arms and around her vagina. Thomas has grown hair around his penis, under his arms, and on his chest, arms and legs. Hair also grows on his chin which

he then shaves.

Let’s see what Joan and Thomas might look like as they get older. Here they are at 50.

Here Joan and Thomas are 80. They are now old. Their skin is wrinkled and lined. Joan’s hair is grey and she needs glasses to be able to see. Thomas has lost most of his hair, and he

needs a stick to help him walk.

Let’s make an ageing line with Joan. Which Joan is the youngest?

Good, the baby. Which Joan is the next youngest?

Excellent, the toddler. Which Joan is the next youngest?

Good work, the 10 year old. Which Joan is the next youngest?

Great, the 18 year old. Which Joan is the next youngest?

Fantastic, the 50 year old. Which Joan is the oldest?

Well done! This is Joan’s ageing line.

• This software can be used for PSHE and science lessons on the way male and female bodies change through the ageing process.• It also helps meet the objectives on changing bodies within the ASDAN Towards Independence “Relationships” module.• Screens 27 - 29 can be printed out for use as sequencing activities away from the computer. Once printed, the figures on screen 27 can be cut out and stuck on the screen 28 and 29 worksheets.
