Changes in Glasgow’s CBD [Date]

Today I will:- Know the main changes to Glasgow’s CBD in

recent years.

UrbanChanges in Glasgow’s CBD

To answer this question split it into four parts.

UrbanChanges in Glasgow’s CBD

Part 1: Retail (Same as previous)

Some shops have closed (particularly on Argyll Street) or relocated to outer city malls and retail parks such as Braehead and Glasgow Fort [1].

To combat this developments have been renovated, such as the St.Enoch Centre and Buchanan Galleries, one of Europe’s largest covered city centre shopping facilities [1].

Part 2: Buildings

New facilities have opened for example the Royal Concert Hall and the Cineworld, the world’s highest cinema. The Merchant City has been restored including the City Halls and the Old Fruitmarket area [2]. Strathclyde and Caledonian Universities have also built modern new buildings in the area [1].

Part 3: Transport (Same as previous)

As far as the CBD is concerned, the biggest change has been in the pedestrianisation of some of the main streets in the city

centre, such as Buchanan Street which makes it safe for

pedestrians [2].

There are also one-way systems, multi-storey car parks and sophisticated traffic light systems to ease traffic flow within and around the CBD [1]. Glasgow’s main bus station, Buchanan Street has also seen a major recent upgrade [1].

Part 3: Housing

In an attempt to attract people back into the city centre there has been a programme of building and restoration of houses in and around the CBD [1].

Most of these involve exclusive and expensive properties aimed

at the wealthy young professional market, such as in the Merchant City and on the High Street, south of the Royal

Infirmary and Glasgow Cathedral. Gentrification has

take place here.
