In 1981, Eva Mae Smith

was in pain.

“I remember my heart

was hurting a lot,” Smith

said.

Smith’s heart was hurt-

ing because two of her

four heart valves were

blocked.

“We were told one valve

was blocked, and the other

was like a melted straw,”

said her daughter, Betty

Fuller. “So, they had to

take two veins out of her

leg and bypass her heart.”

On March 17, 1981,

Smith became the first

patient to receive open-

heart surgery at Spartan-

burg General Hospital, the

former name of Spartan-

burg Medical Center.

Nearly 39 years later, the

Spartanburg native is still

alive thanks to the lifesav-

ing surgery performed by

Dr. Henry Kelley.

“He did tell her that if

she didn’t have the sur-

gery, she would have

passed on,” said Fuller.

“I wasn’t afraid”

During the surgery, all of

Smith’s 10 children were

at Spartanburg General

Hospital, waiting and

praying.

“I wasn’t afraid going in,

because I went and

prayed,” Smith said. “One

of my daughters was cry-

ing, and I told her, ‘Be

quiet, I’m all right.’ I knew

I would be all right.”

While open-heart sur-

gery was new for Spartan-

burg General Hospital

patients in 1981, today it is

more commonplace,

according to cardiotho-

racic surgeon Steven

Leyland, MD, of Medical

Group of the Carolinas —

Cardiothoracic & Vascular

Surgery.

“The procedures are sim-

ilar today, but generally

they are performed on

patients who are much

sicker now,” Dr. Leyland

said. “Open-heart surgery

is much safer due to

advances in technology.”

Today, cardiothoracic

surgeons can often avoid

open-heart surgery with

new minimally invasive

procedures. Treatments

through Spartanburg

Regional’s structural heart

program help treat patients

who aren’t candidates for

open-heart procedures,

with options like TAVR,

Watchman and MitraClip.

“Due to the complexity

of most open-heart surger-

ies, they are not minimally

invasive, but we perform

them when appropriate,”

Dr. Leyland said. “Heart

surgery is primarily for

coronary artery blockages

and worn out valves.”

Smith remained in the

hospital for two months

after her surgery. How-

ever, today's open-heart

surgery patient typically

stays in the hospital for

only five to 10 days.

The week following her

surgery, hospital staff let

Smith speak with other

patients awaiting open-

heart surgery to encourage

them that they would be

OK.

“I just told them it will

be all right, it isn’t any-

thing hard,” Smith said.

“Just believe in God; He’ll

take care of you.”

Following the procedure,

Smith, Dr. Kelley and his

staff were celebrated for

the landmark surgery at

the Piedmont Club in

Spartanburg.

Paving the way for

heart excellence

Dr. Kelley’s surgery and

Smith’s successful recov-

ery exhibit Spartanburg

Regional’s long history of

high-quality heart care.

This paved the way for the

South’s first robotic endo-

scopic beating heart sur-

gery to be performed by

Dr. Leyland at Spartan-

burg Medical Center in

2008.

Spartanburg Medical

Center was also the first

hospital in the state to

receive the Chest Pain

Center with Primary PCI

with Resuscitation

Accreditation from the

American College of

Cardiology in 2018. The

PCI designation means

that physicians use a spe-

cialized treatment, called

percutaneous coronary

intervention (PCI), as the

primary treatment for

acute heart attacks. This is

the highest level of accred-

itation for chest pain cen-

ters.

Today, her children are

thankful Smith exceeded

the expectations of the sur-

gery.

“They said maybe she

would last 10 years after

the surgery, but look at her

now, 39 years later,” Fuller

said. “She’s really

blessed.”

The surgery allowed

Smith to continue living

and doing what she loves.

“I went to church and

sang in the choir,” Smith

said. “My doctor told me a

month ago, ‘You keep on

singing and praising the

Lord. You’re doing

good.’”

THE SPARTAN WEEKLY NEWS MARCH 5, 2020 3

Taking a top down approach to home exterior updates(StatePoint) Whether you

want to boost the beauty of

your home for your own

enjoyment or you’re look-

ing to sell in the near

future, experts recommend

taking a top-down

approach to evaluate the

outside of your home.

“When making updates

to your home exterior, it’s

helpful to think of how all

the parts of the whole work

together to create a unified

look,” says Kate Smith,

chief color maven with

Sensational Color.

With that in mind, here

are a few remodeling ideas

to get you started:

The Roof

A new roof not only adds

aesthetic appeal, it can add

value too. Indeed,

Remodeling’s Cost vs.

Value 2020 report shows

that a roof replacement can

have a return-on-invest-

ment of over 60 percent.

Composite roofing is par-

ticularly durable, long-last-

ing and low-maintenance,

and an all-around smart

investment. Not only does

a high-quality roof help

home-sellers get foot traf-

fic, but the low-mainte-

nance aspect really res-

onates with house-hunters.

An attractive, more afford-

able alternative to the real

thing, the composite slate

and shake roofing options

available from manufactur-

ers like DaVinci

Roofscapes, for example,

reduce pesky maintenance

concerns, offering impact-,

fire- and wind-resistance,

as well as the peace of

mind that comes with a

strong warranty.

This is also a good choice

for both those with a clear

color palette in mind, and

those who might need

some direction, as free

resources on the DaVinci

Roofscapes site include a

Color Visualizer offering

users the ability to see how

different colors may look

on their home exteriors, as

well as a variety of free e-

books with project inspira-

tion and advice. To learn

more, visit www.davin-

ciroofscapes.com.

“Using these free color

tools can be both fun and

empowering,” says Smith.

“They take the guesswork

out of crafting a pleasing

exterior color palette for

the home and help create

increased curb appeal.”

Siding

If your home sports tradi-

tional siding, you may

have noticed that the tiles

contract and expand in

fluctuating weather condi-

tions and temperatures.

What’s more, the color of

these often-times thin and

flimsy materials can fade

quickly.

Rather than replacing

siding with more of the

same, consider composite

siding built to resist

impact, fire, mold, algae,

insects, salt air and high

winds. The hand-split

shake siding available from

DaVinci Roofscapes is

made of virgin resins, UV

and thermal stabilizers,

plus a highly-specialized

fire retardant. Whether you

add accent panels with

composite siding or go for

the whole house, this can

add a hassle-free aesthetic

benefit to your home and

boost its value.

Walkways

Cracked or uneven walk-

ways and steps are not only

an eyesore, they can pres-

ent a tripping hazard to you

and guests. Evaluate

whether it’s time to give

yours an overhaul. Be sure

to select low-maintenance

materials that complement

the look of the other ele-

ments of your exterior.

This is a good time to con-

sider lighting that adds

drama to the walkway at

night and makes for safer

walking.

Sprucing up? Go for

high-impact projects that

boost curb appeal and add

value to the home.

Columbia - The South

Carolina State Museum

will celebrate art in South

Carolina during Art Day,

Saturday, March 7, from

10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The signa-

ture event will feature a

variety of programs high-

lighting South Carolina’s

rivers showcasing the

work of the state’s artists.

From exhibit gallery tours

and live art demonstrations

to live musical perform-

ances and hands on activi-

ties, Art Day will be full of

creative fun.

Art Day will be one of

the last opportunities to

experience the museum’s

Reflections on the River art

exhibition, which features

works from South Caro-

lina artists. Reflections onthe River explores the sig-

nificance of our state’s

rivers on culture, industry

and landscape, as well as

the ways in which they

have inspired artists in the

state. From 16th century

engravings and Catawba

pottery, to contemporary

paintings and photographs,

the exhibition highlights a

variety of art from the

museum’s permanent col-

lection. Museum Art

Curator, Amy Chalmers

will give two special tours

of the exhibit at 11:30 a.m.

and 2:30 p.m.

In a nod to our current

blockbuster exhibit, TheInternational Exhibition ofSherlock Holmes, guests

will get to put their detec-

tive skills to task by learn-

ing how to read a painting

from discovering hidden

clues. Chalmers will talk

guests through learning

how to identify evidence in

paintings that will help the

observer learn more about

it, like where it might have

come from or when it was

made.

Guests will get an up-

close look at how artists

make their visions come to

life with live demonstra-

tions. Rev. Johnnie

Simmons, an artist who is

featured in Reflections on

the River along with pho-

tographer Charles Hite,

and painter Rick Wells are

among the artists, print-

makers, painters and 3D

artists that will be on-site

throughout the day.

Art day will also include

kid friendly, hands-on craft

activities like paper mar-

bling, origami and collage.

Art Day activities are

included with museum

general admission or

membership. Visit scmuse-

um.org to learn more.

Three ways to weather the 2020 tax season(StatePoint) Over half of

U.S. adults say financial

stress negatively impacted

their personal health and

work performance in 2018,

according to new research

from Lincoln Financial

Group. When it comes to

tax season, preparation is

key to easing anxiety,

according to experts.

“Tax season can be

stressful for many people,

but it’s also an opportunity

to strengthen your financial

plan,” says Michael Corr,

chief estate and business

planning strategist, Lincoln

Financial Advisors,

National Planning Team.

“The good news is that

there are some simple ways

to manage the process.”

To weather the 2020 tax

season, Corr offers these

tips:

Get the 411

Whether preparing your

own tax return or paying a

professional, good organi-

zation saves time and

money. In addition to col-

lecting the common tax

documents (e.g., W-2s,

1099s and mortgage inter-

est statements), you should

gather receipts, evidence of

contributions to charities

and 529 plans, and basic

information on assets sold

during 2019.

Also consider milestones

that impact taxes, such as

marriage, divorce, birth of a

child, adoption and sale of

a home. Organizing this

information is the first step

toward ensuring timely fil-

ing.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs

Act significantly increased

the standard deduction for

federal tax purposes. For

the 2019 tax year, the stan-

dard deduction is $12,200

for individuals and $24,400

for married couples filing

jointly. This higher deduc-

tion amount means many

taxpayers won’t itemize

deductions, thereby simpli-

fying tax return prepara-

tion.

Be Proactive

Consider what actions

you can take prior to the

end of tax season to lessen

its financial burden.

For example, if you qual-

ify and act prior to April 15,

you may deduct contribu-

tions to an IRA up to

$6,000 ($7,000 if you’re

over 50) on the 2019

income tax return.

Maximum Simplified

Employee Pension IRA

contributions of $56,000

for 2019 can be made any

time prior to the tax filing

deadline, including exten-

sions.

Or, if you participate in a

high deductible health plan,

you may be eligible to con-

tribute to a health savings

account with pre-tax dol-

lars through April 15. For

the 2019 tax year, the con-

tribution limit is $3,500 if

you’re single and $7,000

for families, with an addi-

tional $1,000 catch-up con-

tribution for those 55 or

older.

Use Technology

Embrace these technolog-

ical advances to reduce tax

preparation and filing bur-

dens:

• Whether self-preparing

or hiring a professional, tax

information from docu-

ments filed with the IRS

(W-2s, 1099s. etc.) can be

downloaded directly into

tax-prep software, so be

sure to access electronic

versions of these docu-

ments.

• Online banking makes it

easy to manipulate account

information and organize

data about relevant expens-

es paid during the year, like

estimated tax payments,

medical and tuition pay-

ments and business expens-

es.

• The IRS has offered the

opportunity for electronic

filing of tax returns for sev-

eral years. Taxpayers who

e-file typically receive

acknowledgement that their

returns have been filed and

get their refunds faster than

those who paper file.

More information about

financial planning and

taxes can be found by visit-

ing lfg.com.

From market volatility to

managing debt, there are

many causes of financial

stress today. However, with

some prudent strategies,

you can greatly reduce your

tax-related anxiety.
