MUSICAL NUMBERS

2017 Season v 3

Dinos, Monsters and Video Gamesby Marshall Pailet

When I signed on to bring my first musical, Triassic Parq, to the Chance in 2012, I didn’t know what to expect. This quirky theater in not-quite-LA was interested in my show about transgender dinosaurs – “I’ll fly out from New York, give this a month or two of my time and then move on,” I thought. Well, as we like to say in the business: “ha.” Three west coast premieres, a year as the resident playwright, and one fiancé later, this place has become not only my artistic home away from home, but has made a profound impact on my career and my life.I’m honored to be back in this special place with what I believe is a very special show. Drew and I were inspired by the challenge of bringing a 2-dimensional video game to life in a 3-dimensional space, and giving 8-bit sprites depth of character and personality. And now, after many years of development, we’re beyond thrilled to present to you the first-ever full production of CLAUDIO QUEST.I’d like to thank our extraordinary cast who have made every day such a pleasure, our dream production team for their inspired work, producers Dori Berinstein and Ken Davenport for their continued support and belief in us, producer Charlie Fink for making it all possible, Mary Kay, Oanh, and the entire Chance staff for giving us such a vibrant home, and each of you for supporting new work.We hope you have as much fun watching the show as we had making it.

Yours,

Marshall Pailet co-author and director

While he was up there, he attended the Seattle Film Institute where he received a Filmmaking Certificate. Marc has been a Resident Artist since June 2008.

Robin “George” Shorter (Associate House Manager) is very excited to be working with the Chance. She has been very involved since 2012’s 24hr Chance-a-thon, where she stayed up all night with some

Chance staff members. Since then, she has built sets, ushered people, but you’ll recognize her most as the person who’s usually behind LindaBAR. When not volunteering her time at the Chance, “George” (as she’s lovingly known at the Chance) hands out caffeine drinks at Starbucks in Disneyland and California Adventure. Come by and say “hi” the next time you visit the happiest place on earth.

Crystal Phillips (Casting Associate) is proud to be a Chance Fellow. She has been involved at the Chance in a variety of different roles, but her true passion is to be the bridge between directors and actors by ensuring that

each director has the best possible options when casting a show. Additionally, she strives to help the actors feel as comfortable as possible in the audition room, so their true talents and personalities can shine through. Past casting credits include: She Loves Me; Loch Ness, a new musical; Alice in Wonderland; After the Revolution; Samsara; Fancy Nancy, the Musical; Dragon Play; Hairspray; Kiss Me Kate; A Bright New

Boise; The Legend(s) of Sleepy Hollow; Anne of Green Gables; The Eight: Reindeer Monologues; Dogfight; The Stinky Cheese Man; The Big Meal; Beauty and the Beast; and A Chorus Line, in addition to multiple OTR readings and LAB workshops.

Chance Theater is proud to be one of the leading ensemble-driven theater companies in Southern California. Recently, we’ve received a National Theatre Company grant from American Theatre Wing, won six Ovation Awards, including two for Best Production of a Musical – Intimate Theater for our West Coast premiere of Triassic Parq – The Musical and Southern California premiere of Jerry Springer – The Opera, as well as four LADCC Awards, including the Polly Warfield Award for Outstanding Season. The Anaheim City Council named Chance Theater “the official resident theater company of Anaheim,” and Arts Orange County has twice named the Chance as “Outstanding Arts Organization.” Known for using bold and personal storytelling to promote dialogue and connection within the Southern California theatrical landscape, the Chance is committed to contributing to a more compassionate, connected and creative community. As a constituent member of Theatre Communications Group, Network of Ensemble Theaters, and the LA Stage Alliance, Chance Theater continues to bring national attention to the Southern California and Orange County theater scenes.
